IDVP - Day 1!
Welcome to Day 1 of my Insane December Vidding Project. So far, it is living up to its name in spades.

Since this is the first day, let me tell you what I'm going to do. I'll provide the vidlets each day, as well as just the section of lyrics that I used (where lyrics are involved at all) and a bit about my thought process, limited as it is on these. I'm also going to talk about what I think succeeded in the vidlet and what failed, as well as note the tricks I learned that day and if possible, how I did them. I intend to use this as an FCP guide for myself so that when it's all done and I want to remember how I did something, I have it written up. Thus, I may go back and add to those details from time to time, in case you're interested. I'll also be putting all of these in my memories, so if you ever want to go back and re-live the fun (heh), just go there.

For any FC or FCP users who read these, please jump in at any time with hints or suggestions on how to do things more efficiently for tricks that I have already tried. I'm doing a lot of random clicking and layering here and I know a lot of times those aren't the best ways, just the ways I figured out.

The first vidlet I did was suggested by [info]cheesygirl: a Wesley vid to the Catherine Wheel song, "Heal." I was pretty surprised the first time I listened to the song and it was a guy singing, let me tell you. For those of you who are just here for the vids - please right-click and 'Save Target As.'

Heal (14 MB)

Please let me know if you're unable to play the vidlet. Also, I know the file is huge for just a minute in length, but I haven't been able to wrestle my exporting down yet. I'm especially looking for suggestions on this, because I want the files to be good quality, relatively small, and readable on a PC as well as a Mac. I don't ask for much. ;) (I tried saving as an .AVI but I either got horrible quality or an unreadable file on any other computer.)

Lyrics
But it's all a lie
and I've never felt so sad
There's a streak of melancholy
running down my back
And there's a great mistrust
that borders 'round the man
I call it strange from a boy
who never left his head

It's how high you are and the time it takes to heal
It's how high you are and the time it takes to heal

My Thoughts; What Works; What Doesn't
I wrestled with which section of lyrics to use on this vid for awhile. The song itself could encompass Wes' tenure on A:tS as a whole, really, but I knew I wanted to keep all of these vidlets narrow in scope so I wouldn't have to rip quite as much source. What I decided to do, then, was do this look at Season 5 Wesley, mostly because I keyed into the "it's all a lie" phrase. There was a lot of lying going on in Season 5. As I was deciding which episodes to use, I thought it would be interesting to correlate the betrayal Wes felt at his father's hands and at Angel's, as well as his betrayal of them.

I'm happy with the structure of this vid, actually, especially considering I didn't storyboard it at all. I love how the Orlon window flash goes into Wes' father getting shot, connecting those two moments of Wes' betrayal (and also how the explosion is on beat), and I love the fade to black at the end on his agonized face. I don't like how the source is two different sizes - WTF is up with that? Also, the ripple effect didn't work the way I wanted it to, and the last two effects are just goofy. Overall though, it's not too embarrassing.

What I Learned
Most importantly: how to get clips onto the timeline. :) Also, how to fade! I double-clicked on the clip in the Timeline (or as FCP calls it, the Sequence) and clicked on the 'Motion' tab, then put a keyframe at each end of the clip and made the end keyframe's opacity 0%.

Transitions are something I'm still having trouble with, so I'll probably have to use them again. I lined the two clips next to each other on the same track and put the transition on top of them, but I'd really like to go back to having one clip on one track and another clip on another track and lay the transition on the top of the first clip because I don't like change *whine*. Also because I don't know how to adjust the transition length yet without affecting the clips that it's attached to. (Here come the inevitable FCP vs. Premiere 6.5 comparisons - but I did like how Premiere had that transition track you used for their pre-made transitions; on the other hand, it sucked that you could only use that transition track, which made clip order juggling something of a pain.)

I also figured out how to make simple titles, and that you use the 'Motion' tab in titles to change the center point of where the text is located. I also learned that playing around with the filter settings on transitions is fun.

One thing I wanted to do that I couldn't figure out was how to hold the last frame. I may have to look for that one again later.

In non-IDVP related news, I got my [info]serenity_santa assignment today and I am muy excited. I'll have to fit in some time for that on the weekends. :)

Hope y'all are doing well. My commenting will probably drop significantly this month, but I will still try to keep up with reading.

ETA: [info]deathisyourart, I haven't found our copy of The Matrix yet. Will you comment with another vidlet idea in case I can't find the DVD (or buy a new one - heh) before this is all up? Any of the fandoms listed *except* that one. Hee. The main post is in my memories.

Squeeeee!!!!!

I love it!

I was wondering what bits of the song you were going to use. So much of it makes me think of Wesley, and I like that you referenced the lying in Season 5. I really was thinking about that when I suggested this song. My favorite bits are the scene with Wes and Angel with the line "And there's a great mistrust", Wesley sitting on his office floor, "a boy who never left his head", and Wes and Angel's final look "it's how high you are..." I am so excited about this! Thank you!

Oh I'm so glad you liked it! What I think is going to be really interesting is seeing how much of my interpretations match the requestors'. :)

Thank you for saying which parts you liked best, btw. That's always really wonderful to hear. I liked the "mistrust" section, too. Heh.

YAY! One down...how many to go?

As for the FCP stuff...umm I use Ulead Media Studio, so I am no help to you. And the source thing is a real pain in the butt. It would be so much easier with the DVD's instead of depending on how other people made their torrents.

P.S. All praise the beat whore!

I am a total beat whore. I need to pull that icon out again.

My very first vid experience, when I decided I wanted to try this vidding thing, was wit h a trial copy of Ulead. I have DVDs for pretty much every other vid so I'm hoping the source differences won't be a problem.

15 more to go! BTW: Re-read the main post, I added in a last minute edit for you. I need a back-up suggestion when you get a chance.

Okay....*sniffle*

I'll come up with something new. At least I don't have to worry about rushing for an idea this time. ^_~

If it helps any, you can also add 'Labyrinth' and 'The Neverending Story' to the list of choices.

Ohhh *bounces from happiness* =D

I'll try to come up with something as fast as I can, as to not cause you anymore stress.

How fun that you're playing around with effects! I, of course, love the smashing of the orb. ;) It's going to be really interesting "learning" this new program with you. Great start!

Today's vid should be interesting as I'm going to try to get a sense of motion going using motion blurs and wind effects and things. Hee.

Hey, did you know there's a "Clamshell Awards" for Farscape vids?

I didn't! But now I have it bookmarked. Thanks!

My favorite part was also the shattering of the Orlon window. Very cool looking. I'm absolutely clueless about the making of vids, but this is such a fun project to watch from the sidelines.

I'm glad people are having fun watching it. It's certainly fun for me. I had trouble focusing at work yesterday, I wanted to be working on it. :)

Mmm!Wes! I'm so excited about this project of yours! I know it's a lot of hard work but it's making December very fun for the rest of us.

Are you going to be putting these vidlets up on your site?
The sanest lunatic you've ever met: by catatonic1242: Angelic Wes[info]sdwolfpup on December 2nd, 2004 08:20 pm (UTC)
I didn't know if anyone was going to care about this at all, so I'm thrilled you guys are interested!

Once this is done I'm going to make an IDVP page and put them all up on there and link it from my main vid page. But I probably won't have a chance to do that until January. :)

Still haven't had a chance to watch this (work is evil!), but as for holding on the last clip:

What I do is to export a still image of the final frame (I belive it's File --> Export --> Quicktime --> Still Image, but don't quote me on that). Then I bring the still into the timeline, and set it down after the final frame of moving footage. Then you can fade to black from the still image.

HTH!

Ok, that sounds like how I did it in Premiere, too. Whew, something familiar! (Which leads me straight into singing "Comedy, Tonight.") Thanks!

Isn't this a great Wesley choice? Obviously my favorite part is where the screen smashes and cuts to the shooting. I started thinking about how there's so many different "facets" of Wes, most of which we never got a chance to really explore...and viola! There appeared your effect at the end ;) You continue to have the crispest editing and most apt scene choices with the lyrics on your vids. This looks like a great program and I'm always interested in seeing what you'll do next. (COB is my favorite of my favorites of yours, btw. Just...wow.)

Thank you so much for this comment. That's an interesting comment about the 'facets' of Wes - very true, too, he's a very complex guy.

I'm glad you like COB! I'm pretty proud of that one. :)

I was never a big Wes fan, and Angel was the Joss show I had the hardest time getting into...but this vid really makes me want to know more about the Wes character.

I think you did a great job pairing the clips with the lyrics.

You are a feedbacking angel. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

I'm glad that this has sparked some interest in the character. :)
Wen: Hammie from CrystalKirk[info]neroli66 on December 12th, 2004 08:35 am (UTC)
Aw, it's been my pleasure feedbacking! And watching and reading...hehehehee

It saddens me though that I did not really start appreciating Angel until the end of the last season. I'd watched intermittently over the years but didn't start falling in love with it until, well, Adam joined the cast...and Fred died and Illyria arrived.

So I am left in this strange some of the arcs I know really well and some not at all place, but I am slowly starting to fill in the Angel gaps with re-runs.

Wes is still problematic for me though, I think once I see more of the dark!Wes episodes he'll deepen more for me. I still have such a strong memory of geeky, by the book Watcher!Wes and geeky, trying to be tough RogueDemonSlayer!Wes (what's a rogue demon?).
The sanest lunatic you've ever met: by sdwolfpup: Wes is ready[info]sdwolfpup on December 13th, 2004 06:11 am (UTC)
I started watching Angel in Season 5 and didn't get fully caught up until Season 4 came out on DVD. I was really intrigued by Wes' character based on what I saw in Season 5 and in Season 1, which I was watching simultaneously! That was quite a disconnect, trying to piece those two characters together. So his growth, which I got to watch in the correct order with the DVDs, was really a fascinating arc to me. Season 3 is my favorite season overall, but he's terribly interesting in Season 4, which I actually will be vidding in two days.

Oh yes, big differance between Wes S1 and S5! I noticed that when I got sucked into the tail end of S5.

I'd seen some random episodes between those two seasons but 1 and 5, and oddly, 3 are the seasons I've seen the most episodes in. :-D

It should be a QuickTime file, do you have QT? You can get the latest, free version here:

If that doesn't work, please let me know. :)
