    C's first weekend in LA
Howdy, Internets! It has been a while. I haven't decided to start posting regularly, but I thought I'd post about this weekend.

[info]snarkyshark2 moved down to LA a few weeks ago, semi-permanently (permanently until grad school). It's totally wonderful having her here with me, after 2.5 years. We've been looking forward to this for a long time!

As our first weekend was spent in San Diego, this last weekend was the first we had in LA. Things we did! )

I can't really describe how nice it is to have all this time to spend with C. Walking around the beach, commenting on all the canine accessories in need of keeking, just having lots of time to talk and do things together, is really wonderful. The transition from LDR to living together has been very smooth, mostly due to our preparations and discussion of expectations. Things come up, and we expect that and talk about them, so they are never more than minor and are quickly resolved. C is settling into the apartment that is her home, and I'm really happy!

    Dear LJ Genie...
    1. What should [info]snarkyshark2 and I do in San Francisco this weekend? We will go up for a day, probably Sunday. We have been to the SF bay aquarium and Ripley's Odditorium. We also have a favorite Chinatown restaurant that we will certainly hit (the New Loey Goey Hoey -- way better than the old one), though other suggestions there are welcome. Any other ideas?

    2. I am the most romantic man in the history of the Universe!!!

Dear LJ Genie: going to SD / Dodgers traffic
    1) [info]snarkyshark2 and I borrowed a bunch of camping stuff from her folks in SD, and we want to get it back to them. Is anyone driving from LA to SD in the near future who could take this stuff?

    2) Does anyone know how bad Dodgers traffic generally is? I need to get to downtown (but not to the game) at 6:30pm on Thursday, and there is a game at 7:10pm. I also need to get there at 2pm on Sunday, and there is a 1:10pm game.

[info]snarkyshark2 and I went to Yellowstone and the Badlands a few weeks ago. Understatement: It was great! Maybe I'll post about it.

I shipped [info]snarkyshark2 up to Santa Cruz last weekend. Having her around all summer was wonderful, and I'm going to miss her. I won't miss waking up at 6am, though (and neither will she). I look forward to December and next April, when she comes back, and we get a jeepicopter with limited, 1-hour time travel to ameliorate her work commute and early start time.

Her landlady is crazy and C gave 30 days' notice 1 day after moving in. With luck, she'll find another place that is good.

I'm going to Orlando for a Symantec conference next week. I'm presenting on a cool hash table I made. I'm also going to have my name on a patent application. woo! I'm working on a cool project... maybe I'll say more about work in a protected entry at some point.

Uh... tired! 8pm is not the time to start driving from Santa Cruz to LA. This is good, and crazy. I'm not sure how it plays with >2 people. I need to not read HP5 right before bed. Can I borrow HP6 from someone?

    KRONOS: DEVOURER OF WORLDS!
    (Reposted from [info]snarkyshark2's journal)

    Dear LJ Genie,

[info]scottsch and I will be out of town starting from Sept. 7th and going through the 16th. We have this adorable pet who needs a little TLC while we're gone. His name is Kronos, and he likes to eat, drink and sleep. He's a good pet for anyone who doesn't have canines or felinoids, as they would probably enjoy a rare lobster-like dinner.

His requirements are water and food every day. He will eat your table scraps gladly! (He also has crab cakes, in case you don't have left-overs).

He's a lot of fun to watch run around, and he is a very gentle little (big) crab. I've never been pinched, and I handle him quite a bit!

Anyone who wants a crab for a couple of weeks will be rewarded with a crusty pal and some other form of compensation (money, dinner of crab-legs, sexual favors, etc.). Thanks!

If you click on the picture, you can see a higher res version that shows how happy Kronos is while he's pigging out!

    Question/PSA: Goodreads
A friend invited me to this book blogging site, so I started to sign up. Step 2 is to give your hotmail/yahoo/gmail username and password so that it can invite your friends. And that particular page is not secure. (The browser doesn't have a lock icon in the lower right. Though it's possible that submitting that information goes to a secure page.) Sketchy!

Does anyone know if this website is alright? When you submit your username and password, is the next page secure? Why the heck does it need that?

[EDIT] [info]jhonen_red says the page is insecure, so don't give it your password.

    Anyone need a roommate?
An awesome guy friend of mine ([info]jkirzner) is looking for an apartment and/or roommate in or near West Hollywood. Does anyone have leads on either? If someone else is also looking for an apartment, perhaps the two of you could move into the WeHo building with Paul, Lisette, Troy, Brian, and Lindsay.

Other people with bigger LJ friend lists should repost this.

    Rand Camp!
Who is going this year? I am having trouble being enthusiastic for this year, because of my abandoned interest in contributing as a lecturer and because attendance last year was so low. I know that I'd have a good time... but also, it means a week away from [info]snarkyshark2 (who would be in my apartment!), as well as a week of vacation time I can't spend with her.

Dear LJ Genie: Please make me a userpic
I would like a userpic of someone being attacked by a monster and saying, "Help! I'm stressed because the stress monster is attacking me!" In the userpic in my head, the monster looks like the monster.com mascot, but less goofy. It is threatening to attack, and says, "I am scary!"

    Man up!!!

    THIS IS SPARTA!!!

Holy crap, that was a sweet pump up movie. It made me feel awesome about being a MAN! Yeah, Y chromosome!!! I'll cut your freakin' head off!

To everyone I know IRL: Be careful around me in the next few weeks, 'cause I might just punch you in the face for no reason! Holy crap, I want a giant metal shield so I can deck people with it! I feel so good about my gender right now.

IMDB doesn't say so, but I bet this movie was a collaboration between Frank Miller and http://www.realultimatepower.net/! They are both so awesome that I want to crap my pants!! Excuse me, I am going to go pop seventeen boners and wail on my guitar while porking a hot babe so hard that pirates cry in their manboobs!!!!!!!!!!!

    Facts:

    1. Spartans are mammals.
    2. Spartans fight ALL the time.
    3. The purpose of the Spartan is to flip out and kill people.

The lip service to reason and freedom was fun. Of course, it's ridiculous, like a lot of things in the movie. But who cares!!

    Working hard... or hardly working?
While coding this morning, I ran across a problem where the obvious solution just felt... ugly. Make the tree doubly linked? Blech. Besides seeming superfluous, it's also a lot of work. Hours, at least! So what did I do? Crack my knuckles and get coding?

Nope! I checked e-mail. I checked LiveJournal. The purpose of all this is to give my subconscious a little time to mull it over.

After a bit, I wandered over to my co-workers' office. While discussing the problem, I came up with another solution that is much more efficient and also much easier to code. Hooray! Then I went back to my desk and...

Posted in LiveJournal! After this, I think I'll read a little sci-fi. To let my subconscious be sure it's happy. Then, I'll code it up (unless it's lunch time).

So I ask you, Working hard... or hardly working?

    Hash collisions
No, that's not when you run into your pot dealer.

My job rocks. I basically nerd out all day.

Recently, I was thinking about the max # of hash table entries that will have the same key, assuming you have a good key function. I assumed that it was C = O(log(N)) for N entries and a load factor of 1, but my tests showed it was a bit less. Well, it's closer to C = O(log(N)/log(log(N)). I did some scribblin' and found that C! = N/e, approximately. Or, for a load factor alpha, C! / alpha^(C-1) = N / e^alpha, approximately. Hm, that's probably an underestimate for high load factors. Hm...

The derivation is left as an exercise to the reader.

    Hyperboles and junk
"Come here, scrotums." - my boss

    • Better than cats - Not actually praise, as Cats sucked
    • Better than metaphorical cats - High praise
    • Better than Platonic cats - Impossible (used to express an obvious hyperbole), as Platonic cats are perfectly cute and hypoallergenic

Agenda for the rest of the day:

    • Burninating the countryside,
    • burninating the peasants,
    • burninating all the people,
    • and the thatched roof cottages.

I've only gotten to level 21 so far. I once stumbled into a room full of treasure, though I don't know how. My hypothesis is that I can walk into a small percentage of the huts.

    Visiting Rand Camp
Anyone in So Cal who didn't register for Rand Camp should drop on by and hang out during the free time. The people are the best part of Rand Camp, and you can check that out for free! People shmooze in the common room starting at 9. It's normal for all sorts of riff raff to drop in. In case you don't believe me, here's Jacob at the summernar, sporting a jewlid while he talks to the Objectivist frontman of everyone's favorite Afro-Celtic-Yiddish ska band:

Come by Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. (Calling me first on Tuesday is a good idea, since people may go see fireworks.) Wednesday is a free day, and people will probably go to the beach, Disneyland, etc, completely separate from Rand Camp. If you want in on that, come by one of the previous nights (or give me a call).

Rand Camp is at Chapman University in Orange. The common room is the Davis Community Center at N Grand St and E Rose Ave.

It's at Safari Sam's in Hollywood. $12 at the door. Doors open at 8 and the show starts at 9. Lisette and I plan to arrive around 9-9:30. Who wants to join us?

    </b>A preview of Windows Vista
Actually, this is a preview of drag-and-dropping files to Vista running in VMWare.

    • It works the first time.
    • The second (or third) time, nothing happens and VMUser.exe hogs the VM's CPU.
    • I kill VMUser and restart it. A third of the time, this works.
    • I restart the Vista VM. 4 minutes later, there is a 20% chance this worked.
    • I exit VMWare, kill all associated processes, and restart it. There is a 50% chance this worked.
    • And maybe it did work, but drag-and-drop suddenly stops working on the machine that is running VMWare.
    • I bang my head on the desk, and reach for my USB key...

    • EDIT: This worked, though Explorer.exe crashed a few times.
    • SECOND EDIT: Explorer's crashes corrupted the files I copied. I had to revert the VM and restart VMWare.
