LibraryThing

Even with the plans to trim my library (at this point, with the exception of a handful of books, I think my entire fiction collection is going on the block just because I simply don't have any interest any more), I have to set [info]kadath on fire. She's going down, you see, because she just introduced me to LibraryThing, and this is a tool that's dangerous for serious readers. Admittedly, this requires me to set aside the time to catalog my collection, but if I had the time to do so, letting me loose with LibraryThing is like letting William S. Burroughs loose in a smack factory. [info]kadath, I will find you and make you pay.

Oh.. so cool. My latent librarian tendencies are urging me to catalog my collection. Since it searches other libraries for info, it should be much faster than entering all the information in myself (what I've done the other three times that I've started my catalog).

The real problem with a large collection is finding some way of segregating the stuff you've entered and the stuff you haven't...

Barcodes? Real books don't have stinkin' barcodes! Real books don't have ISBNs! Real books predate the computer, or ideally even the harnessing of electricity by that nice colonial fellow M. Franklin!

True. But most books like that are worth a whole lot of money - more than I have. Ergo, I have no books like that. :)

Most of my holdings predate barcodes on ordinary books; many predate ISBNs; more than a few predate electricity in the home. (Helps to work in one of North America's largest used-book stores for 27 years.)

How do you plan to part with your unwanted books (there's a phrase that's hard for me to type!)? If they're to be thrown away please consider throwing some my way. :)

I'm having a biiiiiiiiiiig online sale in the beginning of November for the books and everything else. Don't worry: I wouldn't throw out books that were worth reading.

Okay, so I've got a month to finish cataloging my book collection onto my PDA so that I'll actually know what I do and don't have. Nice to have a deadline to make me actually finish it...
