CArlson
The Des Moines Register says: : "Eric Carlson ain't no tree-hugging hippie. He's a tall and strong country boy, a man's man who drives a pickup truck" [insert brokeback man's man joke here] "But that doesn't mean his blood doesn't run a bit green." (ick. Anyway): "Carlson, who owns EC Construction in Des Moines, included as many green building features as he could when he built this new house for himself and his family: a geothermal heating system that draws heat from hundreds of feet underground, bamboo flooring that's made of a more eco-friendly product than wood, and finished concrete in his basement instead of environmentally taxing carpeting." they tell u why too, not only does it save him money (duh) but it's a hot market now (duh) but they site numbers and even examples as far away as Canada... wow. green building is hitting the mainstream. I'd say Nascar dads are gettingit, but apparently that annoys some readers....

you know you got a great thing going on when it flashes all the way from UberGizmo, to MetaEfficient to TreeHugger in the space of a few hours (and if I have to write any more TwoWord OneWord WeirdCapitalizations....)

See, these guys Zoka Zola Studios, are planning on building this gem in Chicago (3 miles from the loop) this year. It's got; green roofs, solar (PV and passive solar), and geothermal for heating and cooling... I WANT TO LIVE THERE!!!!! Of course it's in Chicago, The green roof capital of America. What a great design! What style ...I can't wait to see the media hoopla when this beaut gets christened!!

Enwave: another neighborhood story... [Aug. 14th, 2005|12:57 pm]

When you bike around toronto's downtown core.. you can't help but notice the odd Enwave buildings. They seem like big smokestacks (but aren't) with no big building/factory-- just the stack. And what they're doing, is sucking up the cold from deep in lake ontario and cooling buildings. Its actually the largest geothermal heat pumping system in the world. And it works! They already service over 130 of toronto's main buildings, including the air canada center (where the Maple Leafs play-- sometimes it has to be somewhat cold in there, right?) as well as the banking towers and fancy-pants hotels. Last month they signed their first retailer the Hudsons Smallpox-- I mean Bay Corporation (I like the fact that the HBC cares about energy efficiency, but they sell plastic and other unsustainable crap, and have a crappy history). But Enwave is a great story.. and really it's very much the story of one man:
