    Pseudo-Risotto!
Last night's dinner was good enough to blog about. While eating leftovers today, I typed up the recipe and posted it here on [info]everydaycooking.

    Have you seen my ghost?
    Weighty Ghost, by Wintersleep

This is an excellent song to me, one I feel that I'll listen to for a long time. I looked up the video because I wanted to see what it would be like. I was talking about it yesterday to [info]catsarah, and said I felt it was song that required a lot of motion. I like the way they accomplished that.

    Comic Recommendation
I've come across a comic that I like, and I thought some of you might enjoy it, too. It's a manga-style comic billed as a "Wild West Fairy Tale," The Crow meets Trigun, if you will :) I've read it through to the current page, and it seems to update regularly, which will make a nice addition to my daily reading list.

You like manga and native spiritualism, right? Go, read! :)

You Act Like You Are 29 Years Old

You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel like an adult, and you're optimistic about life.
You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

You're still figuring out your place in the world and how you want your life to shape up.
The world is full of possibilities, and you can't wait to explore many of them.

PSA: Do NOT let your kids touch the Christmas lights, even when unplugged.
No level of lead exposure is safe for children. Even the lowest levels that can be detected in the blood have been linked to cognitive impairment. Children should be exposed to less than 15 micrograms a day.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision has developed a standard test to see how much lead comes off a product when a child handles/mouths it. The product is wiped 10 times, and the cloth is tested for lead. The amount of lead detected is expressed in micrograms per wipe of a 100cm2 area.

    Remember that 15 microgram limit?

Christmas lights tested by CNN from a variety of brand names registered up to 137 micrograms.

Lights are electronics, and are allowed to use such high levels to make their products flame retardant and to prevent crumbling and cracking. Other materials are available but are more costly and therefore rarely used.

When asked, one of the companies (G.E.) simply said "Lights are not toys, should not be handled by children, and are not subject to the same standards for lead."

Please ensure that children do not touch the Christmas lights, use gloves on yourself when you handle them, and/or wash your hands well afterwards! After the big recall of lead painted toys from China, there's a good chance those same parents that emptied the toy box are letting kids help string the lights on the tree. I always helped with this as a child, and worked on untangling the cords (I was very patient and good at it) and never once did anyone think to wash hands after handling them. Mind you I have a tiny bladder (and always have) so I was constantly running to the washroom and therefore washing my hands a lot. Hey, maybe my bladder helped save some of my IQ points ;)

Seriously though, protect your kids and yourself.

A Nutritious Part of this Complete Breakfast!
Ever since I was little, the weekend breakfast has been a wonderful thing. On Sunday, there would be some sort of egg meal in the mid morning, and it was always good. Today I decided not to wait for tomorrow. I got up late, so this would be a great time for a big meal!
Also, I decided to document it for posterity ;)

I eat more than the average girl. I have an active job, a love for food, and the taller/broader body structure that welcomes a solid meal every now and then:

Mmm.. Three strips of bacon, two eggs done sunny side up with salt and pepper(but under a lid to cook the tops a little,) two slices of whole grain flax toast (buttered), and two slices with butter and jam. This goes with a glass of tomato juice, a yogurt cup, and an orange.

The buttered toast is for the egg yolks, the jam toast is for having something sweet, and the bacon is for having something salty. Yogurt is for dessert, and the orange is in case all that wasn't enough. It was enough, so the orange is spared.. for now!

This is both breakfast and lunch, of course. Also, I don't want to make it too often, as it won't be kind to the waistline. On the other hand, this meal will fuel me through hours of activity, and I won't be hungry until dinner time.

This has been another random peek into the wonders of a Jenn weekend!

    Mainlining the Nostalgia, Canadian style!
Warning: if you're a Canadian that grew up in the 70s and 80s, this may make you squee!

Load it in and start playing at 0:47
    Polkaroo song!

If you're an Ontarian (especially a Hamiltonian) I'm guaranteeing you remember this one! I grew up not far from the Lion Safari. Did you know on the off season that they'd take the elephants for walks along the road? That was neat to see.
    Go wild!

The U.S. has Mr Rodgers. We were lucky enough to have had Fred Rodger's friend Ernie Coombs in one of the best kids shows on T.V.
Mr. Dressup (opening song and beginning: 1984)

OMG! I loved loved loved this show (and so did everyone else.) I never forgot the theme song. Wouldn't you have liked to have him as your grandfather or neighbour? Rusty makes a brief appearance at the end!
    The Friendly Giant (also 1984)

Jerome sings Oranges and Lemons with Friendly, Rusty, and the racoons playing.

the last few minutes and the closing from a 1979 episode, probably around the time I started watching.

And finally, With Glowing Hearts, the film used for the national anthem sign on and sign off, and also the film that was used for the anthem at school, during assemblies and community meetings. I literally got chills watching it again. The little girl at the end looks very much like I did at that age, and the baby similar to my sister :)

    Dear Mr. President
This song came out last year, but I just heard it for the first time this week. Apparently the radio station I've been listening to has been getting a lot of requests for it.

The song is in a Youtube video with a photo montage done by the video's creator. It's not bad, but it's the song I'd like you to hear. If you're pro Bush, that's fine, but I don't agree with you. (However, considering his approval rating at the moment, it's highly unlikely I'll run into any W supporters, especially on my friends list!)

A rare case where my journal could make a difference
There's a woman my age in Oregon (redscorner) who is suffering from two neurological disorders and will require between 2 and 4 brain surgeries if she doesn't want to die. The problem? She's in the U.S. , has been unable to work for over a year, and doesn't have health insurance. She does have a Paypal account (it's hidden in her LJ) but doesn't want handouts. Instead, she's found something that won't cost anything if you want to help. She's opened an account at megaupload.com and if she gets 5 million downloads of her text document, they'll give her $10,000. You may have seen this mentioned in Neil Gaiman's blog, or by R.K. Milholland on Something Positive, or on any number of other sites. If you haven't, click on the banner below to go to her page. It won't cost you anything other than 3 or 4 seconds of your time.

    Non-hypothetical question:
What's the fastest way to get a batch of double concentrated Jello to set?

The answer is not "with ice" but "ensure that it spills all over the inside of a cold fridge, and on every conceivable item in said fridge, as well as the kitchen floor when the fridge door is opened. For added effect, ensure that it's bright fucking red!"

    Shepherd's Pie
Yet another variation on an old favourite. I haven't made it in a long time, but I've had the flu this week, and had the urge for some comfort food the other night, and it was easy enough to make even when feeling groggy and stupid.

Most measurements are approximate. Believe me, it turns out fine regardless!

Shepherd's Pie: easy and yummy. )
I heartily recommend this as a comfort food. I'd never done shepherd's pie in a crust before, but I think I like it! It's a bit neater, to be sure.

In which Ian is a Kilty McKilterson
Yesterday I alluded to Ian's new leather kilt, but unfortunately he wasn't wearing it in our pictures on the beach. I've taken some some pictures of it (from several angles, rowr) for your enjoyment.

Of all the celebrities to meet..
I had a little brush with Hollywood today. She looked familiar but I thought nah, she's too famous. (Or infamous)

Today I was standing in a store at the counter with Paris Hilton.

I was in Toronto doing some shopping (Far too much shopping, I won't even tell you the damage), and she was there, as she was explaining to the clerk, while filming her new movie. We were buying a coat for me and a kilt for Ian, and she picked out a couple pairs of pants on her own before approaching the sales staff for more assistance.

So, what can I say? She was dressed low key, in track pants, a shirt and hat, and was very pleasant to everyone. I'm also pleased to say I recieved equally good service from the staff (probably because I was spending a significant amount of money as well.)

In which Jenn spends too much money. Cut for the sensibilities of those who are used to me being a thrifty and penny-pinching shopper. )

    Corn Relish!
It has just occurred to me that I absolutely adore corn relish, but have never made it before. I shall have to see if my mom still has a recipe, but I suspect it isn't all that difficult. Mmmmm, corn relish... Yes I'm having midnight food cravings yet again, why do you ask? :)

    Terry Fator: Amazing Talent
As you know by now, I don't watch T.V. The only TV in the house that's plugged in is for the Game Cube. However, there are times and there are shows that cause me to regret this. Thanks to Youtube I can catch the occasional thing I've been missing, and I wanted to share one phenomenal act with you!

On a show called America's Got Talent (I posted a clip from Britain's Got Talent a while back, I think,) there's one person in the finals (in an episode aired last week) who totally blows me away.

Terry Fator sings better than all the other singers and:
-he does it without opening his mouth
    -while operating a puppet
-while impersonating a famous singer perfectly
    -of either gender

Seriously amazing. There's the video link Ian sent me of Terry Fator singing "What a Wonderful World" as both Kermit the Frog and Louis Armstrong.
    "What a Wonderful World"
(Click here for the longer version with the intro and the judges commentary at the end)

For an amazing example of him singing as a woman, he has his plush friend Emma Taylor sing Etta James' "At Last"

He and Emma do Nat King Cole and Natalie singing "Unforgettable" (song starts at 1:15)

He has his lounge dummy Johnny Vegas do some Rat Pack tunes as Dean Martin and Tony Bennet: "That's Amore", and "I left my Heart in San Fransisco" (song begins at 1:00)

If you watch his promo video, he also does a spot-on impression of Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" (among many others.)

Add to this this I think he's pretty cute in addition to being ridiculously talented, and I am definitely a fan. I hope he wins the top prize so that he can tour outside of the States and I can see one of his performances!

"Every time we'd start to go anywhere he would just start to act like he wanted to go with us, so I says to Robert I says "Robert," I says "he acts like he wants to go with us."

Stay tuned for my next post, it's something a little more amazing even than this!
