... because of things like this:

Excuse me, but if abstinence education can't keep the daughter of the evangelical governor of Alaska off the cock, what hope is there for the daughters — and some of the sons — of average Americans?

Oct. 2nd, 2008 @ 01:07 pm I love it when I remember conversations that make me laugh.
Current Mood: giggly
After eating at a German-American establishment, during our annivesary trip, my wife raves about the food:

"So... wow. That was amazing food. I've never had German food before... but I'm worried what it's going to be like tonight when I have to use the bathroom like three or four times! How's your stomach? Need to hit the restroom before we go?"

"NEIN! Der poopen ist stucken in mein blunderbussen!!!!!"

".... okay, what?"

*laughing* "Just making up language. See what three years of high school German gets you?"

"What the heck is blunderbussen?"

"From blunderbuss. Predecessor to the shotgun."

"Okay, but wh... oh. Augh, gross! And I'm gonna have to smell that tonight! No.. no, I won't! If you have to go, go outside!"

*feigning indignance* "The cats are out there."

"What??? So???"

"Well... they're feral, and probably bored. They see me out there, dropping trow, and, you know, their 'attack that odd moving object over there' instinct kicks in..."

"You really think those cats are gonna go for your sack?"

"Der kitten ist snaggin on mein baggin!"

"Agggh! Mental image! STOP IT!"

"I mean, I'm gonna be like, spinning around trying to get that thing to let go... all like, 'AAAAAH! Sharp claws! Get it off me!' at 2 am, and it's gonna be just *hanging* there, going 'mew!', and I'll be tripping on my own pants, and.... "

"STOP!"

So, took a little run during lunch. Estimate 3 miles in 24 minutes- kind of less than par for me. Hit the hills around Tyson's; was pretty beat when I was done, but not dying.

Sep. 30th, 2008 @ 03:34 pm I'm a go shoppin'.
Okay, so I have a few random gift cards/certificates that are burning a hole in my pocket, but I wanna be all strategic-like in my purchase choices.

Target, $40
Wal-Mart, $10
Amazon.com, $30

I’m thinking…

A 4gb Sansa Fuze from Target. It goes for about $90 or so (better priced than Best Buy or CC, incidentally); that’s slightly less than half off with the gift card, which is not a bad deal for a well-rated MP3 player that plays video and records voice.

For Walmart… if they have it, Kurosawa’s “Hidden Fortress”, or perhaps Heartbreak Ridge on DVD. Failing that, it’d probably be something silly, like a version of Optimus Prime that kicks anybody sporting a Decepticon t-shirt in the nuts while bellowing “Till All Are One!!!!” or something. Not entirely sure.

Amazon… see, this is where my decision process starts to break down. There is just so much crap I could spend it on. There are gaming books, and a blessed amount of games for the 360 that I could imagine (that reminds me- I should go back and revisit the review sites, see what games I need to add to my rental queue). Perhaps I should just save it, for something that really stands out to me. Had considered Heroes S1 (since I picked up S2 for 40% off with a coupon from Borders last week), the Blade Runner SE release, or the Aliens Trilogy/Quadrilogy, but am not certain on any of those.

Sep. 30th, 2008 @ 08:48 am Four years, and not one night on the couch. Well, that one time. But we both fit. :)
Current Mood: cheerful
The 25th marked four years of marriage to my darling wife, the woman I will care for, love, and support through anything life has to offer. She is my love, my steady hand, my clear mind, my muse, and my reason for being so much better than I am.

Thursday was the 'official' anniversary date. We stayed in town, spent lots of time cuddling, went to go see her dad and brother, did lunch with them, then a low-key dinner at Ruby Tuesday (we napped in the evening, and woke up too late to get a 'traditional anniversary dinner at a REALLY nice place'; besides, we were watching our budget). :) We then exchanged gifts- I had gotten her a dozen red roses earlier in the day (delivered), and also wrote her a poem, and bought her the last 2 boxed sets for the 'She-Ra' cartoon from the 80s (I have the He-Man series, now she has the full run of She-Ra; she loved it as a kid). Also got her the "Sex & The City" special edition on DVD.

She bought me some really cool t-shirts (one is a montage of some Transformers characters standing, looking 'ready to fight'); the other makes me laugh: it reads, "Don't make me use my superpowers." I do believe she found my favorite geek shirt. :)

Friday, we slept in and made our way to a bed & breakfast (Butterfly Fields) in Lothian, MD- it's a really nice, secluded place, and the folks who run it are very nice. All furniture is hand-made; you'll have to check out the website (http://www.butterfly-fields.com/). During our time up there, we went to the Eastern Shore, toured St. Michael's (small sea-side community- shops, maritime museum, etc... that's the first time I've seen jellyfish in 'the wild'... they're all OVER the port there!). Got to see Mama Mia in the theater.... found some nice local restaurants in which to eat.... there was a German-American establishment called the Old Stein Inn that had muenster cheese-blue crab bisque that was AMAZING. :)

We drove home late morning on Sunday, and basically relaxed- watched the movie I had bought her, napped, and we basically were lazy for the rest of the day. :)

I have an amazing wife. We have an amazing marriage.

Sep. 30th, 2008 @ 08:04 am So, that address by Bush last week...
I'm late in posting my thoughts on this one, I know, but I was away for our 4th anniversary trip (yaaaay! Details later. :) ). Most of it was pretty much expected- how did we get here, and what's being done. But something about it bugged me, like there was subtext.

The part where Bush says, essentially, 'due to poor/unethical choices by certain parties *eyes Fannie, Freddie, and others*, we're in this mess'. The subtext, to me, is:

"Well... you know... we *could* have put rules in place. Like, regulations, and stuff I don't really understand because of all those big words. But... this way is *SO* much better. It's all their fault! Nothing we could've done!"

Am I missing something there?

Sep. 23rd, 2008 @ 07:27 am Rackin' frackin' tires. Oh, and my guilty pleasure.
So, I left the house early this morning in order to get some stuff done early on... stopped to get gas just before I left the development.  The car had been shuddering a bit, so I took a tour around it... and saw my rear passenger-side tire was flat.  Big piece of metal stuck in one of the treads.  No biggie- I can change a tire.

Just not without my wheeljack.  It decided to go missing.  And of course, nobody's around to ask about using theirs.  So, I come home, call in to work telling them that I'll need to get AAA out here to either jack the car up so I can change out, or tow me into a station where I can get a new tire (I''m not comfortable with the idea of driving on 50 with a flat tire- it's a little ways to a service station).

Good thing I didn't blow a tire on the toll road or something.

Anyways.  I'm at home on my laptop, running some morning processes while I wait for AAA.

Last night, watched the first episode of this seaons' Dancing With the Stars.  Kind of a guilty pleasure, but it's entertaining to a degree (I'd rather they go after 'average Janes and Joes' on the street, but that's me).  At any rate- Cloris Leachman was dainty enough.... and then she turned into this... I don't know... drunk?  She was just 'out there'.  Was really surprised at the linebacker's grace (though I guess it's a necessity to some degree).

Oh... and... Lacey?  The instructor dancing with Lance Bass?  Completely adorable.  Curvy, bubbly, and cute.

Sep. 20th, 2008 @ 09:41 am [Birthday cake] My wife strikes again!
So, my nephew had his 8th birthday party last night; my wife and I were in attendance.  In his words, the party was AWESOME!  The food was AWESOME!  The presents were AWESOME!  The cake was AWESOMER!  (I hadn't realized that 'awesome' had tiers.  I consider myself educated now.)

Because she's such a whiz with cakes, I love showing off her work.  My nephew has been on a big Godzilla kick since my brother showed him 'vs. Mothra' some time ago.  It's endearing, listening to him chatter about a license that's been out for decades, like it's Pokemon- rattling off statistics, alliances, and so on.

(You know how kids will tell you something, assuming you have the same frame of reference they do?  I wonder if that's what it's like for a non-gamer to talk to a gamer sometimes.  At any rate, I now know that Godzilla has 10,000 power levels.  Again, educated.)

Without further ado....Ho noes! Ees Godjirra! )

Sep. 19th, 2008 @ 05:31 pm [Ultimate Fighter] Why cockiness is stupid

I was watching UF last night on Spike, and was astounded with how cocky most of these guys are. Now, I get that they’re skilled. That’s cool. And I get that bravado and pugnacity sells.

But these guys- they bought their own hype. In my mind, that’s dangerous, and here’s why- it engenders complacency. Being convinced that you can’t be beaten is tantamount to being cast from your throne. The guy who screams, and bounces around whooping and talking about how he’s a bad-ass strikes me as less of an issue than the guy who doesn’t. Because that guy is going to recognize when he’s about to lose, and he’ll adjust. He’ll fight like a cornered, pissed-off tiger trying to protect its latest kill.

One guy who had fainted during training got a lot of flak, particularly from some of the more boastful fighters.  He didn't really do a lot of talking about it, just kept getting to work.  Turns out, he won his match.  Dominated the guy.

On the other hand, boasting can be okay, if you're up against somebody who just hams it up.  One guy, quiet (but with an annoying habit of wearing his cap off-kilter while talking to the camera): “Can he beat me? He’s got a better chance of getting me pregnant.” Whereas the other guy was breaking out with, “Yo, I’m like Napoleon and Hitler, dawg. I dominate, yo. You just better watch out. I’m a dictator, and the ring is my kingdom. Dawg.” I don’t mind statements of confidence- but when you play it up, expect to be called on it.

I wanted that guy to lose just on principle. And he did. He lasted the round, but threw in the towel before the second one began. He started off well enough, but you could see him falter when all the skills he thought he had crumbled under a guy who just went to work. By the end of the round, he was asking the coaches for time- likely to see if he could outlast the pounding he was getting. He couldn’t even get his opponent in his guard- cold guy had a full mount, and just rained punches on “Hitler Jr.” for like 30 seconds straight till the bell.

The lesson:  Stop working your mouth.  Start working your challenger.

Sep. 18th, 2008 @ 04:13 pm For the first time in my life, I'm seeking a sports jersey...
... and of course, they don't make them for MMA.  Well, they *do*, but not something comparable to what one would wear for a team sport (football, etc.).

The reason I'm looking is that the Powers That Be here at the office have announced a BBQ day in early October as a 'tailgate party', and have opened the floor for attire to jerseys from anything competitive (football, soccer, basketball, etc.).  The MMA jerseys I've seen have been more akin to tanks, which are verboten.

So, I's outta luck unless someone can suggest something.  I was thinking rash guard (long sleeve), but I dunno.

FASHIONISTA UPDATE:  MMA jerseys I've seen are similar enough to basketball jerseys in design.  Undershirt it is, then.  That, or a Marine Corps 'football style jersey' piece.

1) Are there any fighters with a 'no-win' record who are still 'active'?

2) Do losers get any kind of pay from a lost match?

3) Are there such things as 'exhibition MMA' matches on the professional circuit?

Sep. 18th, 2008 @ 08:26 am I have the powerrrrr!!!!! *holds sword aloft*
Went for another run last night- remembered the posture from before, and did my roughly 2 mile run.  Shaved about a minute off, mostly because I didn't need to stop for traffic since I ran a little later in the evening.  It's starting to get to that 'just barely uncomfortably cool' stage when the sun drops- I'm looking forward to sweater weather (it means I don't have to iron my shirts as often).  :)

Slipped on my Everlast gel-shock gloves, just to try them on, afterwards.  Looked at the garage.  I *really* want to clean that sucker out and water up the Wavemaster, kind of turn it into a make-shift gym/ work area (a la the massive desk against the wall, where I plan to paint miniatures, and do minor repair jobs).  I have 20, 25, and 35 lb. dumbbells, my running shoes, a jump rope, the Wavemaster (and necessary gloves, wraps, etc. to use it).  Only thing I think I'd want to add is an incline bench for crunches.  Figure I can find one on Craigslist or something- they can't be *that* expensive.

Best Buy has a sale going on (it's been going on for a while, according to Slickdeals.net); if you're like me and have a thing for 80s cartoons, you might be interested to know that the He-Man boxed sets are running for $10 a pop.  I got a $30 gift card to BB from my brother and his family for my birthday, so I dropped it and picked up three of them; just need Season 1/Volume 1, and that'll complete the collection (I'm waiting for the more recent version that aired on Cartoon Network to go on sale).  I'm slowly building my collection of Robotech, Transformers, Voltron, and Galaxy Rangers DVDs.  :)

Sep. 16th, 2008 @ 09:32 am Small things.

It’s funny, the small things that make a difference. Took a run last night for the first time in about a month or so (yeah, I’ve been either that busy or exhausted- I play volleyball roughly weekly, though, so I’m doing something at least). At any rate… jogging. I have a tendency of ‘hunching up’ my shoulders, which in turn gives my lower back added stress (and, since I still feel the remnants of popping it from years ago, that’s not exactly pleasurable). So I made a concentrated effort at keeping my shoulders low, and looking ahead, not down.

It’s odd, but my arms felt… stronger. Like they weren’t being curtailed from pumping in unison with my legs. And my stride felt longer- despite not running in a month, I felt MUCH better than I did last time. Took it at a relaxed pace- I figure somewhere above an 8 minute mile, but I wasn’t pushing myself terribly to get that.

Sep. 12th, 2008 @ 11:56 am 9/11 has another meaning for us...

9/11 is a particular bittersweet day for our family- my wife’s mother passed away at 4:33 am on 9/11 last year, after a lengthy and difficult fight with breast cancer. She was a vibrant soul- we connected over silly things like Spider-Man, Smallville, and Justice League Animated… and over not-such-silly things as loving her daughter, and helping the family when I could (even if I bumbled while doing so).

She’s missed by many- her daughter wonders if she watches her, and if she’s proud. I tell her to have no doubts on either count.
