I Love Trailer Park Boys (oh yeah, and my new EP is out) [18 Jul 2005|04:43am]
[ mood | hot ]
[ music | Tegan and Sara ]

Jesus, it feels like it took forever, but my new EP is finally OUT! Yep, we're all pretty stoked. Regardless of what happens with it, I'm just happy we did it, and I'm pleased with the results. As you may have seen from the site, Mike Dirnt from Green Day plays bass on it--it was an honor having him on the tracks, and a great learning experience to spend time with him in the studio (I've never heard such great bass tone in my life!) My pal Chris Dugan played drums and engineered the whole thing--and as always, it was an honor working with him as well. We had a lot of fun with the project, and would like to thank Boston Market for feeding us during all those late nights in the studio. Also, we had Tom Bagley (of Chix Diggit records fame) do the artwork--he did an amazing job, and I'd like to thank him for making me look so good.

Also, we've got our record release show coming up this Saturday. We're playing with a bunch of great bands: The Mr T Experience, Groovie Ghoulies, Teenage Bottlerocket, and Teenage Harlets. I grew up listening to MTX and the Ghoulies, so it's always exciting for me to share a stage with them.

To boot, the "The Smoking Gun" EP is coming out on a rad local label called Ruler Records. Many thanks to them and their wacky buttons.

And lastly, I've been completely obsessed with watching Trailer Park Boys this past week. My pal Jasmine lent me the first and second season on DVD, and I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard...when I was on those two Fat Tours with the Flipsides, there was this inside joke that seemed to permeate every corner of the bus. It was: "Smokes, let's go." Like, whenever somebody wanted some cigaretes, that's what they'd say. Soon it developed into "insert any word here" let's go. Now I know where the hell that came from. The freakin' Trailer Park Boys. Anyway, I love the Trailer Park Boys, it's pure genius, and I want to meet Bubbles.

Don't Miss the Record Release Show!

More rock, less crap [16 Mar 2005|12:22am]
[ mood | contemplative ]
[ music | "Silent Film Star" - Paul Westerberg ]

Went to see Hot Water Music last night at the Warfield--it was inspiring and rockin' as always. I was stoked to get a chance to catch up with my buddies, to hear how they've been, and to just talk about music and what's happening around us.

There's so much great music being made today that isn't being heard. It's not even being heard on the indie level anymore. Everyone is so concerned with making a buck--not just a buck, but the most money they can--that no one's willing to take a chance anymore. At least the labels aren't. Despite that, I believe there are a lot of open minds and ears out there looking for more than what's being served.

Anyway, it's inspiring to see your friends create such incredible things. My hope is that it will all be heard and seen, and given the chance it deserves.

[ music | Kelly Clarkson....what's that song called? ]

What's up all...it's been a good week. Just chillin' since the last show. My dear friend, who I'll affectionately call "Eddie", left for Vegas today. Make's me want to take a flight there right now! But I think I'll pass. I decided not to go to Punk Rock bowling in Vegas this year anyway, so I think I'll wait a while. Maybe I'll find a way to go there before summer hits...that Vegas heat will really get to ya. So yeah. What's everyone been up to? What do you think of that new Kelly Clarkson song? Why is Paris Hilton making an album? Has everyone in the media gone mad?

Here are some pics from our recent shows...

It's Been A Loooong Time [27 Sep 2004|10:49pm]

[ music | The New What Next - Hot Water Music ]

Hello There!

Man, so sorry it's been so long. Since I got out of the studio, I haven't been back to my beloved journal...but here I am! finally. We're going over to Liverpool next month to play IPO, which should be fun (we'll be playing at the Cavern, home of the Beatles). I honestly don't listen to the Beatles much, but hey, they're legends. We'll definitely be back in the UK for a full-fledged tour once the new record's out. Right now, I'll be focusing on finding a good home for the record...more shows and tours to follow. Thanks so much to everyone for tuning in and posting comments. I'm always stoked to hear from you.

Also, I have a new myspace account on MYSPACE MUSIC...would love to have you join (I'll be closing down my old account soon). I'll eventually post some music there, and will be updating it with blog entries, more pictures that you can't find on the website, and fun stuff like that.

Oh, for those of you who haven't check in lately, I got a seriously rad new site up, thanks to my friends over at Pathetic Aesthetic. Check it out!!...got some new music up there too.

Monster Trucks and Patchouli [20 Aug 2004|10:28pm]
[ mood | giggly ]
[ music | "Smile Like You Mean It" - The Killers ]

OK, it's been way too long since I've updated this! But hello to all. How's life? I don't know what to write about. Well, for one, I'm in the studio right now...having fun as usual. Chris and I just finished eating a pizza...probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had in my life, courtesy of Linguini's in Alamada. We're mixing our last song right now...I'm stoked with how it's all turned out, and can't wait to get these songs out there.

Our show the other week at the Bottom of the Hill was really a lot of fun. It was great to see so many familiar faces in the crowd from past Flipsides shows. It was also awesome to share the stage with my band mates for the first time...we all had a blast. David from IPO was rad. I lost my drink tickets that night, which is fine, since I wasn't drinking.

Oh, I finally saw Napoleon Dynamite the other week. It was funny as hell.

Yep. So, I don't know. I heard Ashlee Simpson's record was #1 on the charts last week? Is this true? Was I just smoking crack? I'm drawn to her reality tv show like a moth to a flame. I just can't help it. Ok, back to work...

Sending my Love,
Sabrina

Melted Ice Cream [25 Jul 2004|04:08pm]
[ mood | peaceful ]
[ music | Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly ]

Well, it's a beautiful Sunday out here in Oakland. Finally feels like summer. We were in the studio the last couple of days, tracking bass and doing some rough mixes. It's exciting to finally hear these songs with bass, being that I demo'd this stuff with just guitar and a drum machine. It's been a lot of fun. Just one more song to do w/bass, then we're on to mixing!

After I got out of the studio last night, I went out for some dinner with a friend and saw this Brazilian band out in Berkeley. It was refreshing to hear some different sounds...everyone in the crowd was just dancing away.

Oh yeah, I've decided to add another song to the record--It's a tune I demo'd last March when I demo'd the other tracks. I was hesitant to add it to the record at first, thinking that it was too different from everything else on the demo. But after listening to everything now, I think the song fits. It's been tentatively called "Last stop today," but if I think of a title that's more interesting, maybe I'll rename it.

I hope you are all doing well and having a good time. I'm finally going to go to the record store next week. Gonna pick up that Westerberg CD...I'm itching for some new music. Any suggestions?

All my Love,
Sabrina

What the Fuck have you done? [19 Jul 2004|02:49pm]
[ mood | rejuvenated ]
[ music | "In My Eyes" - Minor Threat ]

that lyric always cracks me up. So yeah, had a really fun weekend..went to the Rock Against Bush show in SF Friday night...saw the Utters. It really rocked. The show was over sold, and it was awesome to see so many people out to support the cause and to enjoy some great bands. Anyone got the last Rock Against Bush CD? It's good stuff. Can't wait to hear the next one...

Went to a friend's art show Saturday night...his painting were seriously amazing. It was a showing for just black and white art, but his were in color, which I loved. He's always going against the grain, and always unintentionally too, which makes him all the more endearing. It's amazing to see the talent that's out there.

Some bands played that night at the gallery too--got to see End on End (members of Hot Water Music and F-Minus). It was really fucking cool. A friend and I were talking about how refreshing it was to see a band in a small place like that. It's a nice change of pace from the bigger shows you get so used to seeing. Reminds me of the shows I've either been to or played at dive bars and hole in the walls over the years. Sometimes it's those small places where you feel most connected to the music and the people that are there.

We've been starting to practice for IPO, which I'm really excited about. My pal Frankie's going to be playing guitar with me as well. I'm stoked, 'cause this'll be the first time in probably 7 years that I've played a show with another guitarist, plus Frankie rocks. We'll be doing that acoustic radio show together too. Here's a link to his band, it's really good stuff, so check it out! www.fallingbythestars.com

Sending my love...

I apologize in advance to all Kenny G fans... [06 Jul 2004|04:29pm]
[ mood | recumbent ]
[ music | "Sailing" by Christopher Cross ]

Do you think that maybe one of the most horrific songs of all time is "Sailing" by Christopher Cross? Or maybe that one song by Kenny G. It's a tough call. So many good ones to choose from.

So, went to Warped tour in SF the other day, and had a blast! Watched Alkaline Trio, the Bouncing Souls, and Anti-Flag from the stage, which made it all the more amazing (and it was nice to be in the shade too). It was good to see everyone there and to meet new folks...Mike and Erin had a baby shower backstage, which was really sweet.

Been out of the studio for the last week--we got some bass tracked, and I'm really stoked w/the direction things are going in. Our studio time will be intermittent for the next couple of weeks, so I'll keep you posted on when I'm going back in and when we'll be finished!

I'm off to the city to catch dinner with a friend and to finally return that Alcohol Funnycar cd he lent me...hope you are all doing well and enjoying your summer thus far--Oh yeah, and how was everyone's 4th?

Read about your band... [21 Jun 2004|08:08pm]
[ mood | inspired ]
[ music | "Left of the Dial" - The Replacements ]

hmm, this has got to be my favorite Replacements song of all time. Anyway...had a fun weekend. Went out Saturday night to see some bands--a pal of mine asked me on stage (which was unplanned on my part) to sing a Flipsides tune. Heheh...it was the first time out of these 7 years I've been playing live that I'd been on stage without my guitar. I had a great time shaking my ass, nevertheless.

Watched the Red Sox game on Sunday, they lost, but hey...Oh yeah, and had a good father's day. Got together with the family--they spent 20 minutes going on about growing up in Florida and all the biological hazards they had to endure while living out there (the gigantic spiders, the no-see-ems, the rapidly reproducing frogs they had to step on to cross the street--not to mention the hurricanes, the heat, and their first year living there with no air conditioning). They were laughing their asses off about the whole thing. All of this was being told to me so I could relay the message to my best friend, who's thinking of moving there. But Miami was much less developed and civilized 30 years ago, so no worries on that. Just make sure you got air conditioning darlin' ;o)

So, going back into the studio soon..can't wait! Got lots of stuff to do, so I should go for now...

The Profile! [18 Jun 2004|01:35am]
[ mood | awake ]
[ music | "Special" - Garbage ]

I had a really interesting talk with a friend tonight...and I just feel like writing. Not because I have anything in particular to write, but because I just feel like rambling on about nothing. Why confine this live journal to simply document what's going on in the studio? Afterall, not to sound cheesy or anything, but so much of what happens in the studio is attached to what's going on in one's head. What's so awesome about making this record is that I'm able to get out everything that's been in my system, in my heart, in my mind, for so long. Everything that's been built up, you know? It's a good thing, really. There's one song on this record, called "Over Them" that sums up so much of what's happened to both my friend and I over the past several years, if not more...if not our whole lives! The beauty of it is, it's a positive song...probably one of the most positive songs I've written in years...probably since I was 16. There are definitely some dark songs on this record, but it's nice to turn it around sometimes and realize that out of the total shit that one can go through, you can come out finding something so amazing--and it's something you wouldn't have been able to fully appreciate had you not been through such total shit. Now I'm really rambling here. But I don't know, it could have been much worse than that. But anyway. Though my friend and I were both pretty distressesd and disgusted by some things tonight (and rightfully outraged, heheh) we got some really good laughs out of it. Here's to more laughs, ridiculous inside jokes, and more insane and sleeplessly wonderful nights. And here's to new beginnings (minus the shit factor).

Love to you All~

[ music | "She's the Blade" - Sugarcult ]

Well, just finished a five day run in the studio, and things are sounding rockin'! We've got the drums and guitars done...the tracking process was a blast, and quite productive (that includes the time we spent surfing the internet and watching the Star Wars Jedi kid spin around with his light saber)...So yeah, I'll be taking a short break, then will head back in to finish up and mix. Oh, and yes, La Rondalla is in reference to the restaurant, among other things ;o)

Also, I'm playing the IPO festival in San Francisco, August 9th at Bottom of the Hill. It's going to be a great night with great bands, so it's not too be missed. I'll post more info on it once we get closer to the date. Alright, I'm off for now!

A Garbage Can in Coronado [03 May 2004|09:18pm]
[ mood | thankful ]
[ music | Bad Religion - Recipe for Hate ]

Wow..just got back at 5 this morning from San Diego. Jasmine and I drove down for the weekend (for both business and pleasure!) and we had a blast. We went to see Stereolab Friday night--the place was packed, and it was pretty awesome getting to see them in such a small club.

OK, I should also mention that we pulled a near two-nighter this weekend, so I'm low on sleep, and am hoping this will be a somewhat coherent journal entry.

So yeah, Stereolab was awesome. We also hung out with Nate and his friends, who were on their way to Coachella. Dined at some great Mexican restaurants. Went to the tide pools. And then we went to see my old tour pals, Rise Against, at Soma on Saturday night. Their show was awesome, as always, and they played a new song which just blew me away. Most of all, it was awesome to see the guys, catch up on things, reminisce, and talk about the future. I'm stoked for them. They're such nice people, and they make fucking great music too. That doesn't happen every day, you know?

I'll remember more interesting points of the trip once I get a few more hours of sleep. But before I leave, just remember: you can drink white wine out of a bottle with a straw.

p.s. how many times did I say the word "awesome" in this entry? ;o)

[ music | Here's Where the Strings Come In--Superchunk ]

Hung out for a bit in the city today, got some coffee (actually just some juice) with a new friend, and talked music, San Diego, and San Francisco hipsters. The weather was amazing out there...it's pretty rare for SF, but then again, we were in the mission. I had a good time...then I went down to my favorite taqueria and got a veggie burrito for the road. That's the one thing I miss about the city...the BURRITOS!!

So yeah, I'm going to San Diego this weekend (part business, part pleasure) which I'm really looking forward to. And now I'm watching the Real World San Diego on mtv. Why?? Why the hell am I watching this...i don't know. And I just saw an ad for that movie "The Day After Tomorrow" during the commmercial break...why are we so obsessed with THE END? The apocalypse? Did I spell that word right? Are we really obsessed with the end, or do lame movie producers just want to scare us by making more lame movies about the world exploding? And why does it always happen to New York first? I suppose watching the Statue of Liberty fall down is more dramatic than watching some barn in Nebraska float away. Oooh, the Chappelle show is on, gotta go...

Any Way You Want It [26 Apr 2004|12:01am]
[ mood | working ]
[ music | "Any Way You Want It" cover by Rise Against ]

Had a good day today, after recovering from a night of bar hopping around Oakland. Today I went to lunch with my parents, then went to my Aunt's for a barbeque...family and free food can't be beat. Last month I demo'd songs for the new record, which I'm really excited about! Oh, and I figured out how to program a drum machine (that's how I made the demo's), which was pretty hilarious and awesome. So yeah, now it's all about preparation...

Jasmine and I put up new "Sabrina Stewart" myspace and friendster accounts tonight. So all who see this, join it! Let's be friends. Let's bring in some rock'n'roll while we're at it!

p.s. Jasmine is a god send--And she has good taste in trucker hats.
