And it's by none other than Gorillaz creators Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn! If that wasn't neat enough, it's also inspired by the Journey to the West (Saiyuki) story, featuring the Monkey King, Pigsy and uh, that other guy who is a sand demon (Sandy) in some TV versions and a water demon (kappa) in other versions...
Check out the animation here!
Of course, it can't possibly be as cool as the 1970's Japanese live action version (Monkey Magic, or just Monkey in English), because that version has the most awesome disco theme song ever. (Which is featured as an end credits song in the anime Lucky Star, in an abridged form anyway!)

Just wanted to do a quick post to let people know that there is a newish anime meet-up group in town calling themselves the San Antonio Anime Society-- or SAAS. ^_^; Apparently, they started in January 2008, and from what I am given to understand, they are new to the area and probably don't realize there was a club here that originally started in 1995 that used to use the afore-mentioned acronym... though we were the San Antonio Animation Society. (You say anime, I say animation, let's call the whole thing off...)
But, just in case anyone is getting excited about the return of our old-school SAAS: no, it's not me, I didn't have anything to do with it. ^_^;
Big thanks to
densetsujin for hipping me to the existence of the other SAAS.
Oh and in other weird SAAS-like "news"- in packing to move apartments this weekend, I discovered what I think was the final SAAS schedule notebook, featuring the anime schedules from meetings dating up to the ripe old date of December 2003. Ah, those heady days when we were busily working through series like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Clamp School Detectives, Future Boy Conan and the like!
--Elin
EDIT TO ADD: We're not associated with the other SAAS, and I am a bit concerned that they are using our acronym, I guess in the hopes of gaining something by the association. They aren't us, though. If it continues, I will probably ask them to change the name, since that would be the polite thing to do. After all, when I formed SAAS, I couldn't call it FAST (Fans of Anime in South Texas) or C/FO (Cartoon/Fantasy Organization), the names of the previous two clubs in San Antonio.

Steve Pearl, a big mover and shaker in American anime fandom, passed away recently due to complications related to diabetes.
Steve was the moderator of rec.arts.anime.info, and was responsible for authoring many FAQs in the early days of online anime fandom. He was very active on the East Coast convention scene, and was a friendly, welcoming person who was instrumental in bringing hundreds of people into anime fandom. He was so well-known and well-liked that Gainax's Toshio Okada dubbed Steve "The Otaking of America".
Not only that, but Steve was a great booster of the American anime and manga industry, and was a big supporter of independent comics. He was a fan, first and foremost.

regarding anime flux at trinity:
Now, onto the exciting news side. Did you all know that we have a sister organization at Incarnate Word just across the street? Well, we do. And they're having a mini-anime convention on their grounds November the 11th. We are invited. Not just as attendees, but as participants, an official delegation. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? I'm certainly going. As well, they desire to have a meeting exchange! Be on the lookout for them sharing space with us on the 25th. (Which means we at the Flux Council will have to find lots and lots of more chairs. Joy.). Tentatively, we'd make a counter visit the very next day. Those who would be interested in going such a thing (and who wouldn't?) can join me at seeing what the other people are watching at Incarnate Word.

FYI, if you're interested in keeping up with San Antonio anime stuff, you may want to join the new DHOS LJ community. It's more actively updating than this one.
Through systems, peoples, and cities, to this place: ReBootRevival.com.
My format: Guardian. To mend and defend.
To defend my new-found friends.
Their hopes and dreams.
To defend them from their enemies.
They say the future of ReBoot is uncertain, and the fans have given up hope.
No one knows for sure, but I intend to find out.
ReBoot!
Site's open. Read, learn and enjoy! :D
We'll bring ReBoot back, no matter how hard it may seem, if we work together we can do it!

Is there anyplace in SA that carries newspapers from Japan? Even just semi-current, monthly, et cetera?
I miss the meetings.

hi yall! i've been going to cons for a good 6 years now but i've never cosplayed before. this year as i go to cons i want to start cosplaying! but the problem is that i don't know how to sew, none of my family memebers sew, and i don't have any friends that cosplay or sew either! and the classes that are advertise to learn how to sew are usually out of my price range. i'm not good with just reading a book and trying it out, i'm better at a audio and interactive learning atmosphere....so i was curious, would any of ya'll be interested in teaching me how to sew?

Nodame Cantabile manga to be made into Japanese live action drama. Following in the grand tradition of manga-to-live-action-drama adaptations, which started with Maison Ikkoku back in the 1980's! This manga has a great storyline, so the drama should be pretty good as well.
Original Ge-Ge-Ge no Kitaro voice actors reunite for DVD launch special! It's cool that they are all stil alive- they've used the same voice actors for every incarnation of this anime, from the 1960's to the latest version in the late 1990's.
Crayon Shin-chan to premiere with a "test run"on Adult Swim next month. If you can't enjoy the insane and twisted humor of Crayon Shin-chan, it means you probably have no soul. ^_~
Sad news: Hirotaka Suzuoki, the voice of Bright Noa from Gundam passes away from lung cancer.

SJ invades SA! We're now one year out from the only San Antonio anime convention! We know you're home bored, waiting with anticipation. We don't want to disappoint! In celebration, we're hosting a pre-anniversary bash! On Saturday, July 15th, meet us in front of the IMAX theater at Rivercenter Mall at 9:30am. We recommend parking at the Rivercenter's parking garage. As usual, cosplay is encouraged, but DO NOT BRING WEAPONS OF ANY KIND, REGARDLESS OF IT BEING FAKE OR REAL. We don't want SAPD to take up your well crafted weapons or arrest you or some such. Also keep in mind it's in the middle of Texas' summer, so temperatures will be hot, more than likely reaching high 90s to the 100s. Make sure you are properly covered but don't wear anything too heavy. We don't want you passing out from heat exhaustion! At 10am we'll start a tour of downtown SA. We plan to visit the Alamo, Riverwalk, Hemisfair Park, and the Towers of the Americas. After this, we'll return to Rivercenter Mall for lunch (bring money for lunch and shopping!). After lunch it'll be shopping (Sanrio store! ) and gaming (DDR is there!) inside the Riverwalk Mall. As usual, we'll be taking preregistration for the special discount rate of $25! Think the day's over and done yet? Of course not! We're renting out the pool at Woodland Oaks for a night of fun, starting at 8:30pm and ending at 10:30pm! We'll have games with prizes (DVDs and more, graciously donated by ADV Films), music, and so much more! Only 60 people will be able to attend the pool party, so call Keri at (512) 769-5520 or e-mail conchair@san-japan.org to reserve your spot and get directions! First come, first serve! You will be responsible to bring your own food and drink to the party (no alcohol or glass allowed). We hope to see you there!
