I suppose everyone has seen the news by now. No more new basic accounts, kids. Pay or show adverts or look for greener pastures.
Let me add this nice piece of information from russian media to the picture.
-------------------
«Компания Sup уже давно рассматривала вариант прекращения предоставления «базовых аккаунтов», - рассказал «Газете.Ru» директор по блогам компании SUP Антон Носик. По его словам, компании просто невыгодны аккаунты, которые не приносят никакой прибыли. «Если блогер пользуется услугой, то она должна быть коммерчески оправдана для компании», - пояснил Носик.

Anton Nosik (Chief Blogging Officer, SUP):
"Termination of "Basic Accounts" has been considered by Sup company for a long time. Free accounts are unprofitable for the company as they produce no income. If a blogger wants to use our service, it's supposed to be profitable for our company."

CnewsQuoting from article above:
Mr. Nosik adds that there is also nothing illogical in LiveJournal to have made no announcement: ‘We do not consider it necessary to inform those, who have not opened a basic account during 9 years of LiveJournal’s existence, that there is no such an opportunity any longer’.-------------------
Yes, he IS this ignorant. He has absolutely no idea that free users make most of content and this very content is what attracts paid users and therefore brings money. Or perhaps he thinks that his company can afford to ignore this fact?
And new owner of LJ (Alexander Mamut in case you don't know) never even HAD a blog to begin with. It's just another small business for him, really.
*sighs*
Make your own decisions, kids, but I'm not going to renew my paid account. I will not leave this place as I have many friends here, but I intend to make full use of alternatives out there.
List of alternatives to LJ:
Beyond LJOther accounts I have so far:

http://rusalkaz.greatestjournal.com/http://rusalkaz.yaoijournal.com/ (this service is still in the works, but looks promising)
InsaneJournal has the most options for free users and it's easily customizable with interface of good old LJ (plus 100 user pics woohoo!). I admire their TOS wholeheartedly~
Ok, time to transfer some entries~~
