so, i found out that the general color scheme for my dad's wedding in october (the 10th) is aubergine/purple/lavender-ish. haley's dress will be taken care of since she is the self-declared flower girl. but i'd like to find a dress as well and fit in with the general theme.
anyone know where i can find a pretty plus-sized dress in a shade of purple like aubergine, plum, eggplant, or another jewel-tone purple? it's obviously a tight deadline but i'm not that worried right now.

information on an important campaign sponsored by MomsRising to help parents get options for good quality summer child care. your help is needed!
Dear Friend,
Juggling work, kids, and summer camps takes the skills of a Detective (What summer programs are good?), a Financial Analyst (Which camps can I afford?), and a coordinator from the Presidential Advance Team (How the heck do I get to the camp, anyway? And what supplies are needed?).
The fact that most parents work year-round, and school, well, isn't year-round, often leaves parents struggling to find safe, healthy, and affordable summer options for kids.
BUT THERE IS HOPE: Last year Senator Obama and Senator Mikulski co-sponsored the STEP UP Act, or the Summer Term Education Programs for Upward Performance Act of 2007, which authorizes resources to provide students with opportunities for summer learning. STEP UP was passed and authorized into law last summer as part of the larger America Competes Act. However, there is currently no funding for the program and summer learning advocates are urging Congress to provide $50 million in funds in the FY2009 federal budget right now.
*In order to get this bill funded, Senators Obama and Mikulski need your help building momentum in Congress.
Tell your Congresspeople to fully fund the STEP UP Act now by clicking here: http://www.momsrising.org/STEP_UP
And, it's important that your Congress hears from you today because it's National Summer Learning Day and volunteers are visiting elected officials in Washington D.C. right now and we can support their efforts.
Summer learning is more important than many think--and it's not just about finding a fun way for kids to spend summer time while their parents are at work (though that's a good thing too!). Studies show that children lose academic ground if they don't exercise their academic muscles from mid-June to late August. Children score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they do in the spring when schools close. According to extensive research compiled by the Center for Summer Learning, this "learning loss" is worst for low-income students, who often lag behind middle- and upper-income children to begin with.
Summer programs can boost academic achievement, motivate students to want to learn, and help them develop new skills and talents.
Yet too few children have access to quality summer programs and this is why we need to fully fund the STEP UP Act now.
Please forward this email to your friends and family so they can help too. The more voices involved, the faster it will be funded.
It's time to expand children's access to and resources for summer learning and afterschool programs in order to send young people back to school ready to learn, support working families, and to help keep kids safe and healthy when school is out.
Enjoy the sun! - Kristin, Joan, Katie, and the MomsRising Team
A big thank you to the Afterschool Alliance and the Center for Summer Learning for their help with this message and their amazing advocacy efforts on behalf of our nation's children.
p.s. We'd love to hear from you about how your summer is going: How are you juggling work and summer programs? What kind of experiences are you having with summer camps or other summer care for your kids? Have any advice for other moms? Do tell! Go to: http://www.momsrising.org/comment/r eply/953#comment-form

Know what this is? It's two cases (plus an extra mostly-full bottle) of "At Wit's End," our 10 year anniversary brew. We took a beer brewing class when we stayed in Chicago in late May. It's a wit beer, which is a wheat style spiced/flavored with orange peel & coriander. It will ferment/carbonate at our house for 2 weeks, and then... Ready for drinking! Can't wait! Our own handmade beer!

gakked from a friend... please repost in your journal! let's raise awareness on this issue and start to change the culture in this country.
Imagine you were in a car accident as a child. You were hurt and it took a while to heal. Every now and then throughout your life, your injuries would flare up and cause problems. When asked what was wrong, what would you say? And what would you do about it?
Probably you'd be matter of fact about it. "It's an old injury. I was in a car accident when I was a kid. I don't know what I did last weekend (or I lifted a box the wrong way, or whatever), but it's bothering me again." Probably you'd call your health care provider and take the meds &/or do the physical therapy to re-heal.
Make sense? Yeah, I thought so too. So why in the world is childhood sexual abuse treated any differently? Why is it secret and shameful for the survivor and non-offending adults?
Imagine if the kid in the car wreck were treated like a sex abuse victim, like something shameful had happened. Bones, muscles, etc would heal poorly, if at all. There would be lifelong pain, issues with independence, mobility, driving. Such a thing would be almost unheard of, and the parents of the child would be looked down upon, judged harshly by society.
But parents of childhood sex abuse have treated the vicims like this for generations. Some still do this. And you know what? It's WRONG. And it has to stop.
My daughter was sexually abused by her father. I stopped the abuse, reported it, and am helping my daughter heal.
I urge you to help me change the world one step at a time. Abuse victims have nothing to be ashamed of. It's like they were in a car wreck - horribly painful but not their fault and not taboo. I truly believe that if we view the abuse in this way, we can help prevent future abuse. We can break the cycle.
