08:49 am - Hey Chicago, get ready for your friendly neighborhood SWAT teams
Weis announces new strategies to fight crime
Friday, May 16, 2008 | 6:22 PM
By Paul Meincke

Chicago's top cop revealed some new strategies Friday to fight crime in the city-- adding semi-automatic weapons, an armor-plated vehicle, and full SWAT dress in crime hot spots.

Tracking homicide numbers has long been - whether fair or not - an important measure of how well the police department is doing its job. In the first four months of 2008, there have been 134 murders in Chicago. That's 11 more than in the same period last year. Aggravated batteries are also higher.

The new superintendent is re-working some crime-fighting strategies. His moves involve assignments, firepower, and dress.

Part of the strategy includes deploying SWAT team members and other specialized officers in full battle dress to crime hot spots. The measure began last month and will continue. Critics believe it to be cosmetic and meant to intimidate. The superintendent sees it as a deterrent.
Story continues below

"I don't want people to think we're going into war, but I think it does send a strong message. If they're in SWAT-type uniform and you're driving through the neighborhood visible, interacting with neighbors and community members, it sends a strong message and serves as a deterrent to violence," said Supt. Jody Weis, Chicago Police Department.

Weis is also moving ahead with plans to equip - within the next three years - all 1,700 of the department's patrol cars with M-4 carbines, a semi-automatic rifle that SWAT team members now carry. Putting them in squads will require training for every officer authorized to use an M-4.

Weis said he wants the M-4's for officer safety, and because - in certain deadly force situations - they are more accurate and reliable than a standard issue sidearm.

The police also showed off a 'bearcat,' a 16,000 pound, armor-plated, bomb-protected vehicle meant to deliver SWAT team members into destinations under fire.

Adding armed muscle - particularly the plan for M-4 carbines in patrol cars - has heightened concern in some higher-crime neighborhoods that ramped up firepower - whether used or not - will put more distance between police and community.

"I hope they never have to use it. I hope they never have to pull that weapon out of the trunk of their car. But if they do, I will make sure they're trained and if they do, they'll be doing it to save a life, either their own or some innocent individual," said Weis.

The department has used its Targeted Response Unit (TRU) to flood crime hot spots with a lot of officers. TRU will now be reduced by 90 officers and officers will be reassigned to work out of their districts.

Police say that should not be seen as a move to de-emphasize special units, and say it is meant to use resources more wisely.

How Pot Became Demonized: the Fine Line Between Good Medicine and 'Dangerous Drugs'

The following is an excerpt from "Dying to Get High" by Wendy Chapkis and Richard J. Webb (NYU Press, 2008). (c) 2008 NYU Press. Reproduced by permission of the publisher.

For many modern critics, the concept of "medical marijuana" is a contradiction in terms. Medicine is standardized, synthetic, and pure; marijuana involves the unrefined and promiscuous coupling of more than four hundred components rooted in the dirt. Medicine -- in its most powerful and privileged forms -- rests in the hands of men, while the most potent form of marijuana is found in the female flowering plant. Medicine engages in heroic battles against death. Marijuana claims only to enhance the quality of life.

Medicine presents itself as an objective science safeguarded by the ritual of the double-blind, randomized clinical trial. The therapeutic value of marijuana relies largely on the "soft science" of subjective experience and anecdotal evidence. From the perspective of its critics, then, cannabis is an effeminate interloper in the masculine world of real medicine, a dangerous drug pushed on a credulous public by illegitimate quacks.you will never look at the AMA the same again. )

Nice pick to rescue franchise
QB Ryan's wholesome image a boon to Falcons

By STEVE HUMMER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/13/08

Place all you think you know about Mike Vick in a strongbox and bury it somewhere deep. Absolutely nothing in there is relevant to the story that follows.

The Falcons' fallen star is at one pole of the quarterback planet. At the exact opposite is the third of Mike and Bernie Ryan's four kids from the not-so-mean cul-de-sacs of Exton, Pa. He's a striking piece of statuary in the pocket, who agrees that his upbringing was '50s-sitcom idyllic and who comes off about as hip as a pair of Birkenstocks.

"I think I'm just pretty normal, like everybody else," said Matt Ryan after his second Falcons minicamp practice Saturday.

"I enjoy going out getting some good food. I love the beach — my family has a house on the Jersey Shore, I love spending the summers there just kind of hanging out. Beach-goer, golfer, TV watcher, just like everybody else. Normal — kind of boring, really."

The Falcons could use a touch of boring after a wild ride through the animal cruelty statutes this past year and change. Read more... )

01:15 am - UFO
At approximately 5PM today, while Bob and I were working on installing the new awning at Spring4th Center, I was looking upwards, watching him on the ladder and peripherally into the western sky, almost straight up, perhaps 80 degrees off the horizon. I observed some 'activity' in the clear blue sky.

I saw two cylindrical objects 'shimmer' in the sunlight, as if they were de-cloaking and cloaking and the position of the sun was showing them. I would say these objects looked like aircraft, but with no wings, ailerons or rudders, and translucent. One was heading toward the north and the other south. They looked like they were 'dogfighting' each other.

There were no trails coming out of either of the objects but the space in front of them seemed to shimmer a bit like visible thermal heat off asphalt. The one headed south shimmered and disappeared; not from speed but rather like it *went* somewhere immediately, in a wink. The other object scooted on to the north, not deterred from its rapid movement by the 'buzzing of the southbound object (actually south southwest).

Speed: Following behind the northbound object was what appeared to be a pair of F-15's at full thrust (900 mph) vainly attempting to overtake the northbound object. Both objects, when compared to the F-15, were going at least 2-3 times as fast. It was as if the fighters were flying through syrup.

Altitudes: The F-15 can max ceiling at 65,000 feet. I've routinely observed commercial flights at the acceptable aviation level of 33-35,000 ft. My first instinct when I saw the northbound object first was it was well above commercial levels. If I had to guess, I'd say they were more in the 45-55,000 ft level. This is one of the reasons it caught my eye; that and the lack of any wings or vapor trails.

I tried to get Bob to look, but by the time i could point out where, the southbound object had disappeared and was about to go past our line of sight as blocked from the building wall. All he could see by that time was the lumbering F-15's scooting across the high skies over Atlanta.

I finally saw one. What in the

is going on?

09:32 pm - Your daily dose of reefer madness propaganda, courtesy your taxpayer dollars
What makes it propaganda? I'll highlight the p-words in
bold
and my comments in
(parenthesis italics)

Depressed Teens
more likely
to try
pot

Report: Depression-marijuana combo
can
also increase
chance of addiction

(the propaganda mantra, may, can, could, might, aaaand repeat)

The Associated Press
updated 9:03 a.m. ET, Fri., May. 9, 2008

WASHINGTON - Depression, teens and marijuana are a dangerous mix that
can
lead to dependency, mental illness or suicidal thoughts, according to a
White House report
being released Friday.
(as if the words
White House
lent credence to its validity)

A teen who has been depressed at some point in the past year
(well hell, who has not been depressed at least twice in a year in your teen ages? Its a time of angst! notice they didn't say 'diagnosed with depression' which is an entirely different thing
) is more than twice as likely to have used marijuana as teens who have not
reported
being depressed — 25 percent compared with 12 percent, said the report by the
White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
(ah the ONDCP, another bastion of truth when it comes to cannabis use and misuse)

“Marijuana is a more consequential substance of abuse
than our culture has treated it in the last 20 years,” said John Walters, director of the office. (
when this man opens his mouth and talks about drugs, he is lying)
“This is not just youthful experimentation that they’ll get over
as we used to think
in the past.”
(straw man argument)

Smoking marijuana
can
lead to more serious problems, Walters said in an interview.

For example, using marijuana
increases the risk
of developing mental disorders
by 40 percent
, the report said.
And teens who smoke pot at least once a month over a year long period are three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than nonusers
, it said.
(so where are the bodies, WHERE ARE THE BODIES?)

The report also cited
research that showed that teens who smoke marijuana
when feeling depressed
were more than twice as likely as their
peers
to abuse or become addicted to pot — 8 percent compared with 3 percent.
(the margin of error in most studies is +/- 3%, yet its 'twice as likely"? And just what does 'addicted to cannabis mean versus, oh, self-medication? Why do people take drugs? To
feel
better.)

Experts
who have worked with children say
there’s nothing harmless about marijuana.
(oh boy, the 'experts' aka people who are paid to say bad things about cannabis, otherwise..they don't get paid!)

“I’ve seen many, many kids’ lives negatively impacted and taken off track
because of marijuana
,”
(Woah, declarative statement there; got any proof that cannabis was the sole cause here, Liz?)
said Elizabeth Stanley-Salazar,
director of adolescent services for Phoenix House treatment centers
in California.
(who, of course makes lots of money off 'concerned parents of addicted youth' and getting quoted in major stories so concerned parents can contact her for...you get the cycle)
“It’s somewhat Russian roulette.
There are so many factors, emotional, psychological, biological. You can’t predict the experimentation and how it will impact a kid.”
(WHICH IS JUST WHAT THIS STORY SAYS THE REPORT DOES!!!)

The drug control policy office analyzed about a
dozen studies looking at marijuana use, including research by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
(
aka other government propaganda mills, concerning cannabis use and misuse)

Overall, marijuana use among teens has decreased 25 percent since 2001, down to about 2.3 million kids who used pot at least once a month, the drug control office said.

While the drop is encouraging, Walters appealed to parents to recognize signs of
possible drug use and depression.
(tying the two at the waist, classic reefer-madness)

“It’s not something you look the other way about w
hen your teen starts appearing careless about their grooming, withdrawing from the family, losing interest in daily activities
,” Walters said. “Find out what’s
wrong
.”
(by now, I think you have learned enough to spot what the hell is wrong with THAT statement)

Commentary: Now, this interview, story, 'research' and 'fact assembly' probably cost you and me over 5 million dollars in tax money. Of course, General Electric aka MSBC trumpeted the propaganda free of charge. How..nice. Makes me want to go out and buy a energy wasting incandescent bulb.

And screw it up the ONDCP's ass.

10:46 am - center news
We decided to cut a major client today.

It was kind of hard, but not really hard. We don't like turning down good money, but we do have enough of a concern for our reputation and the safety of the patrons to give this promoter the boot.

This is the part of being a grown-up that no one seems to appreciate on the scene. Typically it's "lets just do what we have to in order to get along" which allows certain individuals to bully or cajole more than their fair share, or to brazenly breach contract.

I can bend but I won't be broken. No cost is worth the risk. The 2 stall ladies bathroom now has two brand new commodes. This weighed into the decision as well.

Meantime, two more promoters have approached us about doing monthly events at The Center. We hear today if we get a Black Fraternity and Sorority Ass'n of Atlanta Annual Fund Raiser in October.

And Life™ goes on.

08:03 pm - this hits really close to home

You wanted to know why I am not considering a liver transplant. This helps explain.

Update: He died

Medical marijuana user who was denied liver transplant dies

SEATTLE (AP) — A man who was denied a liver transplant largely because he used marijuana with medical approval to ease the symptoms of hepatitis C has died.

Timothy Garon, 56, died Thursday at Bailey-Boushay House, an intensive care nursing center, said his lawyer, Douglas Hiatt, and Alisha Mark, a spokeswoman for Virginia Mason Medical Center, which operates Bailey-Boushay.

His death came a week after a doctor told him a University of Washington Medical Center committee had again denied him a spot on the liver transplant list. The team had previously told him it would not consider placing him on the list until he completed a 60-day drug-treatment class.

The case highlights an ethical consideration for those allocating organs for transplant: whether using dope with a doctor's blessing should be held against a dying patient in need of a transplant.

The Virginia-based United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees the nation's transplant system, leaves it to individual hospitals to develop criteria for transplant candidates.

At some, people who use "illicit substances" — including medical marijuana, even in the dozen states that allow it — are automatically rejected. At others, patients are given a chance to reapply if they stay clean for six months. Marijuana is illegal under federal law.

Dr. Brad Roter, who authorized Garon to smoke pot to alleviate nausea and abdominal pain and to stimulate his appetite, said he did not know it would be such a hurdle if Garon were to need a transplant.

Garon told The Associated Press last week he believed he contracted hepatitis C by sharing needles with "speed freaks" as a teenager. In recent years, he said, pot was been the only drug he used.

(This version corrects he was denied transplant largely because he used marijuana, and that doctor did not give a reason for denial.)

Please respect the boundaries of these two events.

If you really want to show your love for the Center, pay full price for both events and mingle freely!

Please remember we are doing everything we can to keep the doors open without the liquor permits, and extend some understanding as to the uniqueness of this evening.

Of course, Sat after hours features Volt, as well. Come support Munir and the hottest of the hotties to party down your Center.

05:25 pm - Today I served public servents
As noted earlier, I smoked 4 slabs of back ribs and smoke 4 tenderloins for a 'high on the hog' lunch at the GA Department of Agriculture.

It was 'thanks' from the Boys at Atlanta BBQ Club for The Commish scarfing a few passes to the Wild Hog Dinner (see post in late Jan), and generally, well..I'm a
big fat sucker
nice guy, what can I say?

Seriously, I got a big kick out of it. Former House Speaker Terry Coleman, also a senior aide to The Commish, was appreciative of the good lunch. He gets photo credit for the photos with me in them.

nice guy. Take back everything I blogged about him LOL.

I rode my scooter (70 mpg!) through the detours that used to be my neighborhood in Fairley/Poplar (waa! weather warzone!!), to the Ag Building located across the street from
stately Wayne Manor
The Gold Dome™ where all the big dogs stays.

Turns out Bob, our Club President is a senior aide to one of the Lege elite. Go figure!

It was our moment top shine!

His job was to bring sides and sauce.

So..he brings 2 big bags of chips.

And 3-4 bottles of sauce. *blink* Ohhh kay...sides!

But no one complained, and it was all eaten post haste. Of course, there was one of *those* who did not eat pork.

Care for some white bread and BBQ sauce with chips on the side, my dear?

I was
directed
to sit next to the commissioner. So I did.

Everyone
at different times asked me if I was from GA ("No, from Texas". Oh? What brought you to Atlanta?" wife got big raise and big promotion *shrugs*" "Ah!")

After the 7th time, Bob started laughing. I informed the room (all with some state department heads of different thingies, I have no idea) that I did NOT cater (laughter).

For those who care, here are photos of Tommy Irvin, Georgia Agricultural Commissioner and I. Somewhere, in the State of GA official photography file, is several photos of Tommy and me 'hamming' it up with ribs and talk of old boots and the decline of the pork industry in GA.

Note the photos of the murals in the lobby. Sure are a lot of, um, white folk in it....yup. But its all good.

Yes, its good to live in Capitol City.

I have an opportunity to cook and present some BBQ to the Georgia State Agriculture Committee next Thursday. Cooking for about 15. These people make important decision on, um, matters of agriculture.

I have an opportunity to make quite an impression and obtain one of those coveted "The Ag Commissioner owes me a favor, I'll see what I can do" cards.

Should I put some happy herbs in my sauce to get the legislators 'happy on hemp'?

12:39 pm - Tarot: a question The Top Fifteen
For those of you into Tarot, I ask for an opinion.

I understand cards have different meanings, to be interpreted in conjunction with other cards, etc.

Generally, some cards are considered 'all is good' cards and some are 'beware' cards. Some are in between.

If I wanted to display the 'top fifteen' cards, (in relative order, left to right, of most to least favorable) who all compliment each other (or at least, their immediate neighbors on the list).

This is for a sign project for The Center.

What are your Top 15?

Inquisitive, am I!

EDIT: What cards are considered 'favorable cards'? Some are more favorable than others, generally, but anything can be sorted, especially a deck of divining cards.
