This isn't a joke. I'm serious.
This is our manifesto. We believe mankind possesses an intelligence that, willing or not, has created for us a unique role on our planet. We are the first species to use technology and harness the power of nature in such a manner that we are now changing the climate of Earth at a precarious pace. We believe that this situation has put us at an evolutionary crossroads, where a critical feat of timing must occur if we are to survive beyond the immediate future. The decision to adopt sustainable methods of interaction with our environment needs to be made soon, so that they can be developed and implemented in time to protect us. We believe that this will be the ultimate act of self-preservation as a sentient species: consciously planning a dramatic change in our behavior. We welcome this as the new mission, the new myth, and the new paradigm for humanity.
The more technology we develop and the more enigmas of nature we decipher, the more potential we have at any given moment. Time steadily marches forward without mercy, and the more we learn the more accountable for our fate we become. Each new bit of information we uncover about nature and our world gives us the potential to do more damages to it - and the potential to cooperatively use this knowledge to our collective advantage. As our population continues to expand also, we are faced with the dilemna of how to prepare for our new self-created condition. Without a thorough and non-dogmatically based assessment of our condition, we put ourselves at unnecessary risk of ecological disaster.
As one holds this belief over time it becomes apparent that new symbols are needed to represent this mission, symbols that contradict our ingrained patterns of thinking and that can easily be associated with a greater concept. The most internationally recognizable symbol we have is our own globe, with it's north-up orientation that has been the scientific standard for centuries. As consequence we feel that the ceremonial or non-ceremonial inversion of the model globe so that south faces up represents a primary step in breaking ingrained thought patterns. This will begin to change our very impression of Earth as a physical object, both complex and fragile. It is for this reason we take the name International Society for Global Inversion and welcome all into our fold who generally accept the assessment laid out in the last paragraph.
The society does not have an established or dogmatic code for what changes must be made and in what time frame, as these decisions must be constantly re-evaluated and adapted to be understood in new frameworks. We who display the inverted globe (whether as an actual model or only an image) are to be recognized as scientific thinkers without a scientific establishment. Our only commitment is to learn and compute our knowledge, and act as appropriately as we can evaluate. It is with this declaration that I call forth volunteers to affiliate with the society. We must invert our globes. Make noise, be heard, and succeed. Our survival as a species depends on it.
