I don't know, it must have been the coffee [Oct. 7th, 2008|02:30 pm]
...drinking coffee and grading all day, I'm getting a little punchy. Almost laughed aloud at this one

JACK: Phil, stop with the corny jokes
DENNIS: I know a joke Mister Benny!
JACK: Don't -
DENNIS: What has feathers and barks?
JACK: I'm not going to... okay, I want to know. What has feathers and barks?
DENNIS: A dawg!
JACK: Where do the feathers come in?
DENNIS: A bird dawg! [Continuing in a really good imitation of Phil Harris] Ha ha ha, Dennis, you are a SHARPIE!

He doesn't get to do them a lot, but Dennis does really good imitations of most of the cast.

Disappointment [Oct. 5th, 2008|11:54 pm]
[Tags|]

I promise to mellow out on the Benny posts...
I'm still in the past... "Oh, Floorwalker?"
I start to laugh, anticipating Frank Nelson's "Yessss?"
And I get, "Yes, sir?"

... It is not Frank Nelson. He has not joined the cast yet. :(

Francie ate all her lemon jello with bananas and strawberries. She thought it a delicious dessert. And easy enough to make she was able to help me create it.

...I can't say I was all that fond of it.

About one year later [Oct. 5th, 2008|10:47 pm]
"...malty rich, toasty brown, sweet as a nut, grape-nuts flakes."

Love the words, Don, love the delivery, Don, but I am not going to eat Grape Nuts.

Jello is out! A new sponsor! [Oct. 5th, 2008|04:56 pm]
[Tags|]

Hey, Gang, here's a thought to put in your pocket book on your shopping expedition next time: Not only is Grape Nuts Flakes America's most rapidly growing breakfast cereal, but if you buy the big 12 oz economy size package, you are paying less for your grape nuts flakes today (1943) than you did back in 1939!

AND unlike your other breakfast choices, the purchase of Grape Nuts flakes does NOT require a ration coupon! Think of it! NO RATION COUPON NEEDED!

You know, Don, you were able to convince me to buy Jello (we are having it for dessert tonight, with fruit in it like you described so appetizingly). You were able to convince me that if I WERE to start smoking, it would be Lucky Strikes. (Jordan, a being filled with love, actually bought a pack for a sketch and gave me one so I could "tear and compare") But even you, Jack, and the Gang can't make your feigned sudden love of Grape Nuts flakes convincing.

touching [Oct. 5th, 2008|08:34 am]

The show always ends with someone saying, "Goodnight, folks." Over the past month, as Jack has been out sick, the show ends with Mary saying, "Goodnight folks. Goodnight, Doll."

Orson Wells gets off a good one [Oct. 5th, 2008|08:18 am]

[Orson announces who will be playing what roles in the upcoming sketch]

DON WILSON: Mr. Wells! You overlooked me!
ORSON WELLS: [pronouncing every word wonderfully] Don, overlooking you would be like losing a bass drum in a phone booth.

I know, I know. You had to be there. But I have to tell you - in context - it was a LULU!

nice touch [Oct. 5th, 2008|08:16 am]

Never realized it until now - "Hi, fellas," is a common line in the show. I think everyone says it once in a while, when there is an entrance. "It's Dennis Day!" "Hi, Fellas!"

I only realized it because Orson Wells says, "Hello, fellows," pronounced wonderfully.

Guest Host [Oct. 5th, 2008|07:57 am]
[Tags|]

Working on a Sunday Morning, got up at 5 AM. But I'm not depressed any more, because -

Jack Benny is sick. So his guest host is... ORSON WELLS!

These are so hilarious! Orson is completely spoofing himself - brilliant, egotistical, overbearing... and the way he interacts with the gang... it is just so damned funny.

And I'm getting a lot of grading done.

New Jello PUDDING in three, grand, flavors! The same creamy goodness as your grandma's pudding!

(In my world, "homemade pudding" IS Jello. "non-homemade pudding" is the premade stuff in the plastic containers. How the else does one make pudding?)

I give up [Oct. 2nd, 2008|02:31 pm]

I'm going to make Frances Jello with fruit suspended in it. Don Wilson has convinced me that it is a delicious, economical dessert that has an appealing appearence. Jello's "locked-in" flavor gives you all the flavor, always.

Darn these interruptions! Can't they wait until after the show?

Recently, when Phil Harris gets off a really good line, he says, "Ain't that a LULU?"

I can't wait to say that. But first I'll need to get off a really good line.

Jack Benny Show [Oct. 2nd, 2008|02:13 pm]

The show was interrupted by a special announcement. The entire county defense system has been mobilized. Remain calm. Do not panic or alarm. Citizen volunteers need to go to the nearest police or fire station. Calmly.

It was December, 1941.

[Oct. 1st, 2008|10:06 pm]
In addition to shows, my improv troupe does seminars and workshops. The students are phenomenal facilitators - much better than I was, even when I was at my best.

Brian Townsend is a Math Ed professor, and he is excellent. He created a club for math education majors, and the percent attendance he gets is ridiculous. They do amazing things, such as create and run an annual math fair that gets visitors from all over the region.

This week, he asked me if my troupe could do an improv seminar for his club. They started at 9:15 tonight. After five minutes it was obvious that neither of us were needed in the room. We watched the students together. They were clearly having a great time - both mine and his. We didn't speak, we didn't even make eye contact, but I know that Brian and I were experiencing the exact same feeling.

More Orwell [Sep. 30th, 2008|10:59 am]
Bowler has pointed out that the ACTUAL name of the Bailout Bill is:

"To Amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to Provide Earnings
Assistance and Tax Relief to Members of the Uniformed Services, Volunteer
Firefighters, and Peace Corps Volunteers, and for Other Purposes"

This explains why I was not able to find out how my reps voted on it. I wasn't aware that that bill was relevant to my search.
