fucking politics [05 Oct 2008|05:30pm]
Posting this one because I don't like how people are using lies for political purposes around the entire financial meltdown we are suffering. Here's a good refutation of some of the talking points that have been bandied about in an attempt to use the current crisis as a weapon in the election (warning, it is Alternet, so some of the language is more inflammatory than even the BS they are responding to. Yes it would be nice if both sides could try to make their points without having to attempt to frame the other side as evil):

Conservative pundits and politicians have piled onto the excuse like shipwreck victims clinging to a passing log: The real blame for the current economic crisis, conservatives would have you believe, lies not with anything they did, but rather with the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act -- a successful Carter-era program designed to get banks to stop covert discrimination, and encourage them to invest their money in low-income neighborhoods.

and yes, some of it is a bit grasping for straws, imo. But overall it addresses some of the overly broad false claims.

Oh yes, and as usual with political sites, don't read the comments unless you want your head to explode, regardless of where you fall in the political spectrum.

"It's the coin of the realm," says Mark Bailey, who paid Mr. Levine in fish. Mr. Bailey was serving a two-year tax-fraud sentence in connection with a chain of strip clubs he owned. Mr. Levine was serving a nine-year term for drug dealing. Mr. Levine says he used his macks to get his beard trimmed, his clothes pressed and his shoes shined by other prisoners. "A haircut is two macks," he says, as an expected tip for inmates who work in the prison barber shop.

currencies find a way. In Diablo it was the Star of Jordan, in prison, foil packets of mackerel...

Oh, hey, my bank failed. [26 Sep 2008|01:28pm]
[ mood | amused ]

Whoops.

n the largest bank failure in U.S. history, Washington Mutual Inc., with about $310 billion in assets, succumbed Thursday to the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis, was seized by federal regulators and rapidly acquired by J.P. Morgan Chase for $1.9 billion.

Shouldn't affect my checking account. Heh.

Work [25 Sep 2008|05:19pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

So I'm finishing up my seventh week at Cryptic, and I'm very happy with the move overall. Champions Online is really fun to work on, and my coworkers are great. We've had lots of deep and interesting discussions about game design. It is more focused than Wizards was, which is both a good and a bad thing, I miss the broader discussions that tended to occur at WotC, but on the other hand, there is a real focus on implementable design (because of the technical challenges we face in making computer games) that fits well with my attitudes.

Lunch outings are fun, building critters is fun, there is a ton of work to do, and I'm feeling useful, needed, and productive. Yay. :)

Fascinating, Scary, and I can believe it based on personal experience [25 Sep 2008|03:11pm]
[ mood | despairing ]

"We like to think that people will be well informed before making important decisions, such as who to vote for, but the truth is that's not always the case. Being uninformed is one thing, but having a population that's actively misinformed presents problems when it comes to participating in the national debate, or the democratic process. If the findings of some political scientists are right, attempting to correct misinformation might do nothing more than reinforce the false belief."

Scary, but very believable based on experiences discussing everything from the computer flame wars (Amiga vs Atari, Mac vs PC, etc.), to politics to programming (Thankfully fightable there because ultimately objective truths are objective) to game design (less fightable, though it is rare I have to argue with people who have diametrically opposed design views since fun is much less of a belief thing).

It says bad things for democracy and debate, which is worrisome in the extreme, since our form of government is moderateyl predicated on voters being rational and informed, though not as much so as free markets require.

BTW, sorry everybody that I just don't do so much linking to cool stuff on the net these days. Hopefully reports on my breakfast and the occasional OMG I can't believe it political link aren't too deathly boring, heh. :)

This is a vice presidential candidate? Seriously? [25 Sep 2008|10:26am]
[ mood | annoyed ]

Damnit, I'm trying to avoid seeing political idiocy, but my friends keep posting train wrecks... The McCain campaign thinks THIS is vice-president material? Ok, yes, I know, it is the party that picked Quayle, but at least in that case there weren't serious fears that the Presidential candidate was going to die of cancer in short order...

PAIN! [21 Sep 2008|03:03pm]
[ mood | amused ]

Ok, pain is an overstatement, mild physical discomfort more like.

I just put a tarp over the back oh [info]vilandre's pickup truck (or more accurately the one his borrowing from our friend Cisco). The tarp was last used at Burning Man. Playa dust got all over my clothes, no big deal, and my hands. Despite washing it off in the sink almost immediately, my hands are burning as the dust eats its way into my epidermis. And the skin is super dry now. Heh.

Your result for Reincarnation Placement Exam...

Tralfamadorian Messenger

46% Intrigue, 59% Civilization, 59% Humanity, 25% Urbanization.

We had trouble placing you, but finally found just the thing... for someone who adores technology and knowledge, but doesn't care for much else. Intrigue and adventure? Not important to you, evidently. The company of your fellows? Not to your tastes. The bustle and crowd of the city? Not for you. Were it not for your positive attitude toward modern technology, we would have made you a medieval monk and let you live out your days in a quaint little cell, with access to all the books you could possibly want to read. But instead...

You will be a mechanical being, born on a planet where machines have long ago taken completely over and organic life has become extinct. You will be sent as a messenger to the other end of the galaxy with a message of good will -- a journey of approximately 205,125 years. The message reads: "Greetings."

Hello. Goodbye. We hope you have an satisfactory journey.

bah my keyboard took a header last night and the USB wand for my mouse got broken. I'd been having mouse issues anyhow so this just confirms I need a new mouse. Hopefully this will make wow less frustrating. Tech decision, wired or another wireless? I liked the G7 before it got flaky. But wires has advantages too. And has never flakes out the way this one did.

Hrmm deep issue I know.

Pain [07 Sep 2008|08:44am]
[ mood | amused ]

Ouch, I went to a circuit training class on friday morning, with my boss from work. It was fun, but OMG my hip flexors are tight now. 2 days of agony and inability to move easily. Every time I stand up I have to stretch before I can stand up straight.

It hurts, heh.

I'm stretching constantly but whenever I sit down at the computer it tightens back up again.

Politics [04 Sep 2008|01:51pm]
[ mood | disappointed ]

Ick, I just made the mistake of reading the transcript of Palin's talk at the RNC last night. I know, I know, political speech, but wow. Seriously wow. Outright lies and slanders. Palin's speech on comes off dripping with hypocrisy. I can't believe Republicans are dumb enough to fall for that garbage, but they are. As a little-l libertarian it is really depressing. And yes, I know it is a speech to her base, meant to fire them up, and politicians as a whole could care less about truth, but still, I wish we could get an honest one, a forthright one, one with actual principles, just once.

Weekend [03 Sep 2008|11:50am]
[ mood | amused ]

So yeah, no surprise, the weekend went well. Friday night I hung out with Ming and just talked about life and stuff. Going from spending the majority of my waking time with Ming when we had our startup, to seeing him only on trips down to CA was a big change, and it is good to have him back in my life on a regular basis again. I should take advantage of Jennifer being away to get lots of guy hangout time with him in the next few weeks, since it has a different structure than hanging out with a couple... :) Heh.

Saturday was John's birthday party, and that was great fun. I spent the early part of the day doing some party prep, and the evening was getting together with the gang in San Mateo. We had omakase at Sushi Sam's and it was excellent as usual, then lots of hanging out socializing. Good times.

Sunday was more party prep, I got the patio mostly cleared of all the stuff that [info]lching333 had already sorted through, hauled more things off to the storage locker, and had one box disaster where a box fell over in the car, normally no big deal, except this one had loosely packaged corn starch (I think). So, white powder all over the back seat of the car, argh. Dinner at John's was delicious, Kris made pork tenderloin wrapped in rosemary and bacon. Yum. We also played some GTA:IV, and watched some farscape and burn notice. Good times.

Monday was BBQ! I finished clearing off the patio and getting things set up, picked up Steph from BART, repaired a leaky toilet, contemplated completely fixing the other one, decided to put it off for a time when lots of folks weren't just about ready to show up (but I will be disassembling that toiled soon, oh yes I will. Fear my plumbing skills!). Kris, John, [info]grimicus, [info]punoqlads, Ming and George all showed up shortly after, food prep began, and in relatively short order garlic burgers were enjoyed by all. [info]lching333 made fantastic mojitos and orange julieses (both alcholic and non) all day long, which were very refreshing in the heat. We played a game of Vinci, Rock Band was played and conversation and good times continued into the night with [info]coyo and [info]fenowyn arriving from Burning Man after most of our day crowd had left. It was a wonderful time with friends.

Last night I made the wild guess that [info]lching333 would be busy working on her contract gig and went up to San Mateo after work to hang out with Kris. 45 minutes desk to door, at just after 6pm, which is not bad at all for a commute, though odds are they will be down here soon enough. :) We hung out and chatted about life, relationships, horses, money, houses, and all that sort of stuff, then met up with John, George and [info]grimicus at their favorite southern restaurant. The pulled pork was REALLY good, and the beer was tasty too (some sort of locally brewed ale that didn't have any nasty aftertaste). After dinner George gave Kris and I a lift back to her apartment and we handed her car off to Dan, so he could go back to work, boo. Kris, George and I hung out more continuing our conversations, then George left and Kris and I kept talking till too late, heh. :)

It was a conversation heavy 5 days! Which is a good thing for sure, though I really need to set aside a couple nights this week to do some writing for my contract gig, I've got a bunch of notes that need to be turned into actual finished text. Yay writing for Magic. :)

And yeah, that's mostly it. :P

DMV [26 Aug 2008|10:11am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

car registration and inspection + driver license all went well. Missed one question on the license test, a sign identification one, which I knew what the sign meant, but wasn't sure which of the multiple choice answers matched what it meant, heh. :) So, license will come in the mail, I have to get the car smog checked and go back to the DMV to finish off the registration/title stuff.

My only big annoyance is the fact that I had to pay hundreds of dollars of tax on my car because I bought it relatively recently. That's right, CA taxed me on a car I bought in another state, while I was a resident of that state... And the tax was serious, over 11%... I made a guess as to how much tax I paid on it in WA, and got that taken off, but I still had to pay $268 additional over what I took as a guesstimate of what I paid in WA.

Oy, pretty darn ridiculous in my opinion.

soda [25 Aug 2008|04:55pm]
[ mood | working ]

I keep finding myself seduced by the idea of a soda at work (Cryptic has free soda in the kitchen fridge), start drinking one, then before I finish it, I realize I'm not actually enjoying it and toss it in the garbage. Now, not getting the extra empty calories is good, but it would probably even better not to grab the soda in the first place, heh.
