July 5th: "Shanghai Vice" at the Montauk Club

On Saturday, July 5th, Dances of Vice returns to the venerable Montauk Club (25 Eighth Ave, Brooklyn) - for an evening of pleasure and decadence inspired by the Orientalism craze of the early 20th century - featuring live music from 1920-30s Old Shanghai.

At the time, Shanghai was revered as the "Paris of the East", but was also known as the "Whore of Asia". Which are you coming for at "Shanghai Vice"?

I feel bad for those who missed it, like me - who was busy all night! Everyone looked truly amazing, and the location is a dream. This is exactly how I envisioned Dances of Vice should be.

Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear...
So that's where they all came from! We were featured in the Nightlife section of the NY Times:

The Weill Party

Friday, April 25, 2008

Party like your grandparents did Saturday night at the Montauk Club in Park Slope. Dances of Vice, an outfit dedicated to early-20th-century costumed debauchery, takes over the mahogany-lined members-only club with an evening of Weimar-inspired music and performances. Daniel Isengart, a German-born cabaret diva who lives in a fifth-floor walkup turned conceptual museum, will do a tribute to “The Threepenny Opera,” alongside the jazz band Grandpa Musselman & His Syncopators. Dress to impress your great aunt.

See you tonight!

whip-crack

I'm devastatingly swamped with academic obligations, so please be patient with me if it takes a while to respond to some of your emails! Cripes, I leave for Europe in two weeks, which will put me even more behind schedule with DOV-related planning as I promote the festival and woo investors abroad.

Hope to see some of you at The Montauk Club on Saturday! By the way, Dances of Vice is in the current issue of Spin Magazine, p. 44. With coverage from the NY Times, Spin, and Flavorpill, this has been a good month for us, and I hope it reflects in our event on Saturday.

New flyer version
WGT flyer screen

I'd like to extend a sincere thank you to all who offered invaluable feedback in regard to the flyer design! Dave, your suggestions were spot on and I really appreciate the detailed remarks. I'm much happier with this new version! The frustrating thing is, I can leave the computer, and look at the flyer again in 5 minutes and see something else that needs tweaking - and I'll be stuck here all day! (For example, right now I want to move the ship a bit more to the right...)

Alright, alright - I'll cut it out and just send the dang thing to the press. Thanks again :)

Aquirax Uno

I'm sure I've posted about him before, but Aquirax Uno (aka Akira Uno) is one of my favorite artists. Lucas and I have an amazing video production he worked on on VHS, which is in storage at the moment- I've been meaning to watch it again and put some clips on YouTube. He's not very well known in America, and his works aren't available from any US sources. It's tempting to purchase his books from Amazon.co.jp, but shipping costs more than the book itself...

Last night, Lucas and I had a great time performing at Foreign Affairs, hosted by Daniel Isengart. He did some amazing Klaus Nomi covers, and I had stars in my eyes when he performed, as usual. Amber Ray gave a brilliant burlesque performance of transforming into a Monarch butterfly. The costuming and performance was reminiscent of Weimar era cabaret, which I loved- but her adorable smile was signature Amber Ray. I was also thrilled to witness a performance by Nicole Renaud, who sang beautifully with French chanson solo accordion accompaniment. I don't think we'll be performing there again next week, but we will probably go just to enjoy the show. I was so glad dear Mashinka and Jeremy were able to join us for the occasion. Jeremy was our music coach that evening, and decided our first album should be entitled "MSG".

Rococo: The Continuing Curve

Rococo: The Continuing Curve 1730–2008
On view March 7–July 6, 2008

In March 2008, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will present Rococo: The Continuing Curve, 1730–2008, a groundbreaking exhibition that fully explores rococo style and its continuing revivals up to the present day in multiple fields, including furniture, decorative arts, textiles, prints, and drawings. The exhibition will chart the progress of rococo style as it radiates out from Paris, travels to the French provinces, migrates to other European countries, and later crosses over to the United States.

Rococo: The Continuing Curve is organized by Sarah Coffin, head of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department; Gail Davidson, head of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department; Ellen Lupton, curator of contemporary design; and guest curator Penelope Hunter-Stiebel. This is the first museum survey of rococo and its ongoing resurgence, tracing the design movement’s birth, rebirth and transformation across centuries and continents. The exhibition will explore these regional and chronological modifications, and study the social, political and economic influences affecting the migration and assimilation of rococo style.

Valentines Day nostalgia:

"And you may be spoiled, but you are absolutely made of gold, and of the sweetest, most darling gold ever mined by gnomes in the fairy forest. And I love you. And you're not spoiled, you spoiled little mouse."

I am certain I have some of the most amazing love letters ever composed in the history of mankind. That's one of the very few things I miss about being in a long distance relationship. The distance motivates you to seek alternative means of expressing your love and inspires deep poetry.

"Can I help my love for you? The answer is no, just as Jesus mentions in Lucas 3:2. 'He could not helpeth his love for her.'"

I should be asleep...

Polaroid by Jen Zak @ DOVF

This has got to be my favorite character at the festival. I couldn't find him when I was awarding the costume prizes, and I'm trying to track him down so he gets his just desserts. Can anyone identify him? His girlfriend is a real cutie, too.

While I'm posting Jen's Polaroids from the festival, I might as well share some of these other gems plucked from the Dances of Vice Flickr pool. All images © Jen Zak! Every picture of hers I've seen looks amazing, and I have to thank and congratulate Jen and Diane for offering such an amazing and unique contribution to the festival.
