Sethuramiyer CBI

Today I had a nice time with Rajith and Ramakrishnan. We had a good lunch from Brindavan hotel and watched an interesting Malayalam film Sethuramiyer CBI at Sangeeth theatre.

Sethuramiyer (Oru CBI Diarykkurippu, Jagratha), Vijayan, Dasan (Nadodikkattu, Pattana Pravesham, Akkareakkareakkare), Sethumadhavan (Kireetam, Chenkol), Mannar Mathayi, Balakrishnan, Gopalakrishnan (Ramjirao Speaking, Mannar Mathayi Speaking) - all these characters that have appeared in multiple movies due to their popularity, are part of the nostalgia for many of the Malayalees. Sethuramiyer appears for the third time in this film, with the same director, script writer and actor combination (K Madhu, SN Swamy and Mammootty), and in spite of many childish and silly scenes, the nostalgia is so strong to make the film immensely satisfying. They have used the same background music as in the first part, and it was nice to hear that again. Mammootty does the role that he had done during his 30s, some 16 years back. He definitely shows age, but it is amazing to see him doing the job without any significant shortcomings. I don’t think any of the other characters mentioned above will make a comeback, as the respective actors have become too old and unsuitable to do the roles, and no other actors can do these roles either. But I think Mammootty can do the role of the investigator again, without looking awkward. Saikumar as the son of Sukumaran's character in earlier films did some mimicking of Sukumaran's mannerisms and dialogue delivery, which was interesting.

As an investigative film, Sethuramiyer CBI maintains suspense till the last scene (even though Rajith was able to predict about the killer during the interval :-)). The general tempo of the film is good, but I would say it lacks in energy compared to the earlier outings of the CBI officer. The characters of Navya Nair and Nandana were totally unnecessary and Vineeth Kumar as assistant to Mammootty looked like a misfit. He didn’t show any enthusiasm during the investigation and his job was mainly opening gates, pressing calling bells and measuring time etc., and occasionally making expressions of wonder when Mammootty says something. There were also few romantic scenes between Vineeth and Navya that were irritating, to say the least. I think these three characters should have been completely eliminated from the film.

I like Mammootty doing the role of an investigator, as his physique and expressions suit such roles. In Malayalam, I would say the best suspense films I watched so far are, Kariyilakkattu Pole (Padmarajan), Mukham (Mohan), Uttharam (Pavithran), The Truth (Shaji Kailas) and Charithram (GS Vijayan). TV Chandran's Alicinte Anweshanam, even though not exactly in the same category, remains as a classic, in which Alice's search for her missing husband reveals his completely unknown personality and she realizes that she never really knew her husband. I feel it is one of the best films of Malayalam.

Navya Nair is K Madhu's relative. Hence she appears in almost every frame.

Sukumaran has two sons. However, the director chose Sai Kumar to play his son. And he does a darn good job of it too.

I didn't know that Navya is Madhu's relative. So that explains why she was seen in Chathurangam as well, opposite to Mohanlal. In Sethuramiyer CBI, she was intolerable. Thankfully, she appears only in few scenes, but all posters have her big picture in them, as if she is the CBI officer. May be because Madhu is the producer of the film as well.

Indeed, K Madhu is the producer of last two CBI movies (Sethuramayer CBI and Nerariyan CBI).. He produced both the movies in the banner "Krishnakripa productions"..

Navya Nair is K Madhu's niece , sisters daughter
