"If it's a girl, I'm going to name it 'Bookcase.' Or 'Sandstorm.' Or maybe 'Hat.'" [Sep. 1st, 2008|02:59 pm]
I know everyone just wants to talk about this pregnancy stuff blah-blah-blah, but I feel we're missing the most important part of this story.

To wit: Sarah Palin's children are named:

(i) Track
(ii) Bristol
(iii) Willow
(iv) Piper
and
(v) Trig.

I rented the first season of "Californication." [Aug. 5th, 2008|11:59 am]
What would be left on TV if they canned all the shows about rich, idle white narcissists?

This is a semi-serious question. I'm trying to decide whether it'd be good for me to get a TV this year.

Not in a disrespectful way. [Jul. 28th, 2008|12:26 am]
I'm not a big fan of the TV version of the Boondocks (though I always liked the comic strip), but whenever I hear arguments about slurs and reappropriation, Riley's comment at 0:23 runs through my head.

Almost-Entirely-Serious Question [Jul. 17th, 2008|08:11 pm]
Are there any good arguments against equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians? I honestly can't think of any that I've heard and accept as reasonable.

Interior

Her mind lives in a quiet room,
A narrow room, and tall,
With pretty lamps to quench the gloom
And mottoes on the wall.

There all the things are waxen neat,
And set in decorous lines,
And there are posies, round and sweet,
And little, straightened vines.

Her mind lives tidily, apart
From cold and noise and pain,
And bolts the door against her heart,
Out wailing in the rain.

Here are some pictures of my balcony and flowers. It feels basically like a treehouse since my apartment is so old and falling-apart, but I'm trying to make it a nice place to have a cup of tea in the morning.

Flowers, etc )

I'm curious to see how long it is before I manage to kill all of these pretty things. For right now everything except the basil seems to be doing OK. We'll see.

Free-Time Summer Stuff I Want To Read/Learn About

Epistemology
- Contextualism (I actually don't know anything about this. I probably need to know something about this)
- Timothy Williamson's Knowledge and Its Limits
- Pragmatism (I think I might secretly be a little bit of a pragmatist. Don't tell anyone, though)

Metaphysics
- Ian Hacking's Historical Ontology and his paper on Max Black
- more Putnam
- Nelson Goodman's Ways of Worldmaking
- philosophy of color (this stuff might be crazy and awesome)

Other Stuff
- Chomsky and His Critics
- Women in Philosophy: Singing in the Fire
- Some of the fiction I've managed to accumulate this year -- i.e., Zadie Smith's first two books.
- Something on philosophy of race.
- Second Sex!!!!!!

Goofy analytic philosophy question. [Apr. 15th, 2008|08:39 pm]
Hey. What are reasons? I'm writing a paper where I want to argue that reasons (along with other stuff) can serve as truthmakers for some normative propositions, but I'm not sure what it means to have a reason (funny, right?), and I'm having trouble locating the relevent literature.

As a first pass I'm tempted to say something like, "A reason is a belief that serves an evidence-providing role," but I'm not sure if that's crazy or obviously wrong or both.

Things that are awesome [Mar. 24th, 2008|07:35 pm]
[info]apperception and I took a day trip down to Philly a couple weeks ago, and visited the Wooden Shoe bookstore. The Wooden Shoe struck me as really similar to my good ol' hometown Boxcar Books, though maybe a little smaller.

But that's not what I wanted to tell you about.

What I wanted to tell you about was this zine I found there, Up the Logic Punks! #1.

That's right: a zine for LSAT logic games. The world needs more things like this.

A = A [Mar. 19th, 2008|12:27 am]
[mood |undermotivated]

Today my friend Matt was talking to me about the seminar paper we're both working on for our Personal Identity class. I told him it's the most boring thing I've ever written. He nodded, and asked me if the writing process itself was at least going smoothly.

I hesitated and thought for a minute. "Well," I said, "I think everything I've argued so far is true."

Sometimes that's all you've got.

Discoverer

If you must leave the shores of the mind,
scramble down the walls
of dome-locked underwater caves
into the breathless, held

clarity of dark, where no waves break,
a grainy, colloidal gist
and quiet, carry a light: carry A = πr2,
carry Keplar's equal areas in

equal times: as air line take Baudelaire's
L'Albatros: as depth markers
to call you back, fix the words of
the golden rule: feed the

night of your seeking with clusters
of ancient light:
remember the sacred sheaf, the rods of
civilization, the holy

bundle of elements: if to cast light
you must enter diffusion's ruin,
carry with you light to cast, to
gather darkness by: carry A is to B

as A plus B is to A: if to gather darkness
into light, evil into good,
you must leave the shores of the mind,
remember us, return and rediscover us.

Q&A [Mar. 15th, 2008|11:22 am]
Question: How depressing would it be if Obama's campaign fails because white moderates can't wrap their heads around the context of black liberation theology?

Answer: Super depressing.

Attn: Queer theory folks [Mar. 13th, 2008|09:53 pm]
Can someone give me a quick gloss on what the concept of "assimilation" amounts to? Examples of assimilationist behavior?

What are some reasons for thinking that assimilation is necessarily harmful?

Drwencke Update [Feb. 25th, 2008|08:57 pm]
As many of you probably remember, the College Republican scumbag who publically harassed and intimidated me last year for my work with Albion College POWER's production of The Vagina Monologues ended his candidacy for chair of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans last fall after it came to light that he was being charged with cyber-stalking his ex-girlfriend. The story received some buzz since Drwencke was also on the GOP payroll stumping for presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

According to the Macomb Daily, Drwencke will be ordered March 12 to serve one year probation under a proposed plea deal taken under advisement by Judge Peter J. Maceroni. If he complies with probation conditions and doesn't get in trouble, the two-year felony -- unlawful posting of a message -- would be reduced to a misdemeanor. A second charge of using a computer to commit a crime would be dismissed.
