Again, addressing the Sheffield folks: anyone up for celebrating my birthday this Wednesday? If there's enough people willing, I'll book a restaurant now (probably East Ocean on the Moor), but if there aren't so many I was thinking take out and some films...

I'M BACK...
So, I went to the dentist. The appointment only lasted 5 minutes and basically involved them saying "...you're fine, but your wisdom teeth look like they might start to cause some trouble. Come back in 6 months". At which point I went "wait, what? Aren't these *points at black marks* cavities?" and was told yes and no - that they were surface cavities which don't require fillings, but I should probably keep an eye on them just to be safe.
HUH? D8
On the plus side, I did get myself horribly worked up, thinking I was going to need a lot of fillings (and oh god the injections in the mouth again), so what a relief that was :D;
Also Loki is now becoming HUGE and is, in fact, the prettiest kitty IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE. No cat could possibly be prettier than he! I'm half afraid he might get stolen DX
Anyway, lets get to business...

Anyway, moving on - I am sharing this in honour of the HD remix of Street Fighter II demo which came out last week and looks HOT DAMN.

The gaming grind!
|
May. 31st, 2008 @ 08:08 pm
|
|---|
|
Since university has more or less finished for the next few months (i.e: no anime society), I have a little more spare time in the evenings, so I've bought myself a couple of games in the hopes of getting back to the gaming grind WOO.
I am, in fact, rather pleased with these two happy purchases, so lets take a look at what we have...
Bully, aka: Canis Canem Edit. Also known as one of the most controversial games of recent times after Manhunt and GTA. Well, obviously. Because the game is about bullying, right? And mindless violence? GOOD GOD, THINK OF THE CHILDREN. Only it isn't really (as could be expected). I will concede it is pretty much Grand Theft Auto set in a school, but there's a little more too it than that. You play Jimmy, an unhappy youth who has just been dumped at Bullsworth Academy whilst his less than sympathetic mother and ageing stepfather go off on their honeymoon. For a year. From there you basically get a grilling from the headmaster to KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN, a bit of trouble from the campus thugs and an introduction to Gary the ADD megalomaniacal sociopath (who is AWESOME) and poor weedie Pete - thus your time at Bullsworth begins. Not the friendliest of schools, really. There are a number of different factions on campus (it's a school, after all) - the bullies (thugs), the preppies (rich kids), the greasers (GREASE LIGHTNING), the jocks (muscle brains), and of course the NERRRRRDS. And it's your job to fit in, be it by kicking their asses, paying them to leave you alone, or by completing errands and missions to advance the plot (which inevitably affects the kind of relationships you have with them).
So, yeah, you can be a bully. Yeah, you can vandalise stuff, and yeah you can break into lockers and steal stuff. You have a trouble meter, and there are (over zealous) prefects patrolling the halls to make sure everyone is in line. You get caught, you get punished. You don't... well, you get away with it. (just like in real life!) But the fact is, as soon as you start hitting kids smaller than you (because there are younger kids on campus) or any of the girls, your trouble meter will go straight to red, and you'll get busted in an instant if you get caught (which you almost certainly will be, since every single prefect will head straight for you).
...I am enjoying this game immensely. The voice acting is good, and the dialogue is absolutely hilarious at times (especially the faux-British Preppies). Gameplay is also enjoyable for the most part. Sure, fighting plays a large part, but you also have stealth bits, social bits, thinky bits, etc. The whole thing is, rather than sinister and evil, incredibly juvenile and hugely enjoyable for it. Having said that, I'd say the humour is a bit sharp witted for anyone over the age of 16 to actually appreciate, but the game really isn't meant for anyone under the age of 16 anyway.
And GOOD LORD the music is freaking awesome! Danny Elfman comes straight to mind, especially when you're riding the bike.
It's also funny how the people who lynched the game forgot to mention the class sections of the game. Okay, so you can choose to play truant (and risk getting tackled by the beefy prefects who act like cops from a 70s TV show, and are accompanied by funk music when they chase you), but classes are SUPER FUN 8D There's art, English, shop, PE ('gym'), chemistry and photography. Passing each one successfully levels up some aspect of your prank power, social skills, and the like. In the case of English classes, I genuinely found myself challenged. Word scramble, timer, find as many words as you can. I'd say art (of all things) is the hardest class, but amusing as it levels up your romance power XD Yes, the dating aspect is silly, but amusing and occasionally cringe worthy. You can court the young ladies of the campus (and some of the young men - controversy SHOCK) and kisses restore your health when you don't feel like forking out $1 for pop.
Wait, FIZZY DRINKS GIVE YOU HEALTH BACK! CONTROVERSY.
So yes. FUN. I might go and play some more in a bit 8D
Odin's Sphere. So very... very pretty. 2D prettiness (sprites, but everything looks like a painted story book) meets side scrolling action 8D It had to be done! However, the fact I am playing Bully so much means I have yet to really get on with this one. So far I can say two things - PRETTY and ORIGINAL. It's about time someone made a new side scrolling beat 'em up (Golden Axe... Streets of Rage... ah those were the days~), but I never expected SquareEnix to poke it back to life. Gameplay has proved a little tricky at times, but it's almost a totally new system (YOU USE SOULS TO GROW HEALTH FRUIT), so that's to be expected. Story wise... well, the whole thing is about a little girl reading a storybook, so it's epic fantasy. At the moment the plot focuses on a young Valkeryie princess (Square seriously needs to lay off the Norse for a while) trying to win her father (Odin)'s love on the battlefield as a war rages against the fairy kingdom. Apparently it will switch between characters at some points and the story paths with converge and so on...
Anyhoo, I would like to draw more Dante, but...

Fansubs and bits of stuff

Right. I am sure everyone here knows how I feel about (most) modern fansubs by now, (i.e: that they suck and need to LEARN TO TRANSLATE, SERIOUSLY, because lets face it - translation is the whole point, right?) and that I did my university dissertation on translation practice specifically applied to official and fan subtitles of anime (ahh good times~)...
Well for the past few months, my housemate has been working on something really rather awesome. Take that dissertation I did, add his scathing tone and annoyingly professional editing abilities, and you get...

You know it makes sense unlike most fansubs.
And whilst I'm here, I might as well leave some kind of arts:

| » for the LOVE OF-- & seiyuu woe(?) |
Rant time, people!
Right, whilst episode 1 left me apathetic/annoyed/generally bemused, episode 2 of Macross Frontier has left me with no doubt at all that the series is BLOODY AWFUL. The characters are dull, the music is uninspiring, and the plot is... er... actually, is there a plot?
Only good thing to happen so far is a short scene where two of the amazingly boring (and badly drawn) characters are listening to Totsugeki Love Heart in the car. We miss you, Basara ._. Boomberrrr...
REVIEW THE SECOND: here are the 3 opinions I have managed to form from the first episode of Junjo Romantica (having never read the manga, I will appologise to those on my F-list who seem to love this series so much): 1) Call me bias, but Hikaru Hanada's voice is hotDAMN. It doesn't help that the character he voices is basically Sol as he is portrayed by the (awesome) circle that is Jam to Jam. It's quite amusing really... if he wasn't incredibly creepy at the same time. 2) Whilst the art was typically substandard, I liked the SD facial expressions. Once again, they suspiciously reminded me of Jam to Jam... 3) I don't think I can actually stand this series for 24 episodes. Frankly one was enough to make me take a break half way through to consider kicking puppies and stealing sweets off small children. The opening had pretty much everything I hate about mainstream yaoi: pink, flowers, stuffed animals, generic character types, and so on. It filled me with defiant RAGE AND A DESIRE FOR CARNAGE. Though I seriously doubt that is where the series is going.
What I will say though is I am impressed that they managed to fit what could quite easily have made up a short OVA's worth of plot into a single episode.
In conclusion: I will keep watching for seiyuu glee. I may regret this.
And speaking of Sol, Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus! I've now had time to play more. Axl's story makes me sad ._. Something good needs to happen to the poor guy already. More plot to come...
I've also just noticed how it's not just Sol who has a new voice actor - Appart from That Man (aka: Young! That Man) with his Tomokazu Sugita-ness, I'm pretty sure Anji, Baiken, Bridget and Venom (my eyes may have been playing tricks on me as I sped through the credits, but I could have sworn Venom is now voiced by Junichi Suwabe of all people D:) all sound rather different. Sol's new voice is sounding a bit better now I've listened to it for several hours, but Hikaru Hanada will always be THE MAN (not That Man) in my mind. Sigh. Ah, and in case I didn't mention before: Raven and Crow have the same voice actor. Read into that what you will...
JUICE!

Okay, I absolutely adore Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I admit it. Shoot me. The first series was fantastic, and whilst the second series took some getting used to, it's still awesome in it's own garbled way.
I'm also in love with Nozomu - IT CANNOT BE HELPED.
Additionally - Edgeworth spin off game? I'll be having that, thank you. Should be nice doing things from the prosecutor's side for a change :D
Anyhoo, this week at work we moved upstairs into the newly decorated *large* office with one small window (i.e: practically no natural light) and very little air. I don't think this is going to make me well :/ I also have very little work, so much of my day involves reading news sites. Then feeling guilty. Because there HAS to be something I should be doing... I feel like I'll be getting reprimanded for it, even though I don't think it's actually my fault I have nothing to do. Hmmm....
Anyhoo, I was rather hoping to have a weekend to sleep (and draw, and watch more of the second season of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei), but I've decided to go larping instead. Even though I'm not entirely certain I have the energy. YAY!

Today I found myself sat, thinking (as I frequently do) "Y'know, I really want to draw something". I have any number of things I should be drawing (Daler 3, Operation Mint Sauce, Zack/Cloud DA community contest prizes). But something else struck me instead.
Anyway, you know how I keep saying I'll try my hand at animation? Welll...
( Mmm, caramel... )
And now a music meme, because I like these :3
( GO! )
I've chosen to marathon Sayonara Zestubou Sensei today, having been meaning to watch more since I saw the first episode a few months back to find myself giggling away. Half way through now and words cannot express how much I love this series and how much it's making me laugh... I think that might make me a bad person, but dammit, it's just awesome!
[EDIT to moan about the weather] It's snowing. And I mean bloody great clumps of the stuff. This being after yesterday when it started off nice and sunny. Then rained. Then snowed. Then hailed (large, pea sized bits of ice). Then rained again.
It's April, dammit, where's my sunshine!?
Anyway, back to egg fried rice and Goodbye Mr.Despair... [/EDIT]

Well, I wont be playing any more of GGAC+ until I can get a new step down converter, but in the meantime, I'll do a list of things we know from what I've played so far (i.e: Sol's story path 2, Ky's story path 2, and Justice's story path):
( Cut for possible spoilers including hearsay )
In short: Thumbs up so far. Though I'm worried that if I like it too much, I'm going to get sucker punched when it turns out they are trying to tie X and Overture together. Oh god.

Aaaaand... I'm back! How you all doing? :3
( My trip to the Japans... well, Tokyo anyway )
( The main event! )
Monday was spent at the magical Ghibli museum which I loved muchly :D Though the gang did get the feeling we were the only adults there who weren't accompanying children XD; And we weren't allowed on the Cat Bus as it was for kids only *boo* Still, we did get to see a nice animation about a spider which has never been seen outside the museum (though we were hoping for the Kitten Bus, the spider was nice enough). Monday night was spent blossom viewing - a visit to the imperial palace to look at the cherry trees (very pretty) before heading over to a hanami festival over at the *controversial* Yasakuni shrine. So... much... food...
It was a really nice way to end the trip.
And I am filled with the glee :3

Currently sat in an all night manga and internet cafe, wrestling with this keyboard, but people are waiting for me back outside, so I`ll be quick:
Just saw the last X concert of my trip (i.e: the second of the three they will be doing) - and it was one of the greatest things to ever happen in the history of things happening EVER.
They were absolutely amazing!
As for Guilty Gear fans - don`t worry, from what little of the AC PLUS story mode I`ve completed so far (Sol and Ky`s path 2s and what looks like Justice`s only story path) this is not the last one. Also - new character called Crow? So looks like Hojo crossed with Sephiroth.
REJOYCE!

Long time no post. Mainly because of work, but also because of the sheer amount of PLANNING...

Most interesting mishearings of my name this week: Fiona, Tiana, Leanne.
I do have to wonder HOW...
Anyhoo, remember that IT stuff the guys at work wanted me to do? Didn't involve complex HTML at all. In fact, the whole thing is closer to data input since the site provider uses such a rigid template, it's very difficult to do anything else. Sigh.
Still kind of sleepy. Only been able to really draw at the weekends, so lets take a look at the past 3 weeks worth of stuff (which is pretty much all slash based and not much else because I felt like it so bah humbug, etc.)
ZC - Rest:- An attempt at imitating the Togainu no Chi style with a peaceful Zack and Cloud picture. SolKy - United We Stand:- Because when That Man starts using Sword and Shield analogies, it's hard not to.
There was also a Togainu no Chi picture, but it's really bugging me to the point that I'm thinking about tearing it down and starting again out of pure frustration that I could have uploaded something so SQUIFF in the first place. GRAH. Speaking of Nitro+chiral madness...LAMENTO HAS CAT BOY BARDS.Truly... this is a game of the Gods. Has a bit of a Ghibli feel to it too (read: Mononoke).

| » I R New-Zealandish |
For those of you who haven't heard my amazing adventures in the office over the previous week, I have had 3 rather odd phone calls.
Phone call the 1st: I take a phone call, and whilst waiting for the relevant person to turn up, get asked whether I'm from New Zealand because I have 'a foreign accent'. No, I'm just from the south.
Phone call the 2nd: I phone up a supplier to find out some information on a part number. Whilst he looks it up for me, he decides to ask whether I can remember the name of the street Paddington Bear lives on, because he and his colleague can't remember. I offered to google it for him, but he said no, and to remind him never to ask me Paddington Bear related questions in the future because I'm rubbish ;A;
Phone call the 3rd: I take a phone call from a client who I ask if it's okay to put on hold whilst I contact the relevant department. He says this is okay, as long as we have good hold music. Sadly, I say, I think we just have a machine going beep beep beep. He says that's no good and that I must sing for him instead - I claim I can't sing, he says he doesn't believe me, at which point the relevant person returns and I end the conversation with "and you'll never know" before transferring him over.
I then found out he's a rather important client XDDD;
Conclusion - there are some awesome people on the other end of the phone.
Anyhoo, I'm less tired than I was last week. Still rather exhausted, still trying to work my social life in with my lack of time, etc.
Really want to draw :/
Wish I were more excited over Apollo Justice being out in English, but I just can't raise the enthusiasm.
Completed Togainu no Chi pretty much in it's entirety at LONG LAST (don't care about Nano's story path, he's a creepy bastard.) Now I think I'll actually start on Lamento which has been sat on my desktop for a while.
Also finally gotten around to replaying the original Guilty Gear since it's been 5 long years since I first/last did XD I'd forgotten how retro it was, and it's awesome. Though Justice did take 5 bloody tries to beat. What the hell happened there!? *feels a little ashamed*
I need to book tickets to Japan today, since it would appear I'm off to see X-Japan in concert next month. Hell yes!

| » YAY SATURDAY~! |
First of all (since I have my priorities right): Blazeblue is looking DAMN nice. Arc have really out done themselves this time (super shiny graphics!) Also, new character silhouettes! Some of those look suspiciously familiar (3rd shadow from the right looks a little too much like Chipp). Dude on the far right though? TOPHAT, HELL YES!
Anyhoo, first week at work over. My conclusions so far are: damn, a lot of responsibility / damn, smart shoes will never be comfy / damn, the coach to the place hates me, as I haven't been on time once this week (shh, maybe no one will notice). It only took until Wednesday for me to fall into depression land over the fact I'm going to be there for many more weeks to come, and the complete loss of my social freedom (9 hour days with a single half an hour break does not a happy R make). This was quickly solved, however, yesterday! Turns out we finish at 1pm, not 1:30pm. Finishing early on a Friday = joy.
Anyhow, a brief summary of my job: buying the components the company needs to manufacture electronic stuff in house, keeping up good supplier relations so we can get more stuff for less, unpacking things and making sure they're in the right place, and checking invoices against delivery notes and purchase order forms and so on. This = a lot of responsibility. I might be killed if I fail XD;
Anyway, new glasses! The world is now blue, and it's very soothing. I would have gone for pink, but it was too pale / made very little difference. The brown wasn't really the right shade. Awesome luck, though, as when I took my chosen frames to the till, it turned out they were £20 less than I thought they were going to be 8D SWEET. As well as my nice new glasses, I've finally gotten a haircut (been a year, etc.) Not quite as short as I wanted, but it's nice enough. Also means I don't have to tie it back for work (HURRAH).
Now it's my free time, I should be doing things like updating the Hope and Free project, writing up more LFHC, drawing someTHING (been a week! Must... draw...)
But I have the sudden urge to replay Togainu no Chi...
