up and at 'em [Mar. 4th, 2007|04:34 pm]
Hello, everyone! I've moved blogs yet again, haha. You can find me now at http://quinnzap.wordpress.com/.

You're probably thinking: "He's made ANOTHER blog?! He keeps doing this!" Well, what's different this time is that in the coming weeks I'll be shutting down all my other blogs, eventually leaving just that one. I won't give up the accounts, though, because I'll still be using them to read friends' blogs. :)

Why WordPress, you ask? Well, I've finally found a blogging engine that is an all-around joy: it's fast, secure, powerful and user-friendly. It takes some of the best aspects of the LiveJournal and Blogger engines, and mixes them up with other novel ideas that are both intuitive and efficient.

Drop by and say hello! :)

new userpics! [Oct. 3rd, 2005|01:53 pm]
And now for something completely different: new userpics! They're from VG Cats, a hilarious webcomic that's got varying moods of humor, mostly from a gamer's point of view. I'll also be changing the userpics in my Blurty account, but I'll be using a different set from the ones here.

Meh, the only thing that's annoying about changing userpics is that all your prior entries assume the new default picture unless you use the same keywords from your prior set. Ah well, c'est la vie.

The weather is, as usual, funky. Thank goodness I don't get as many asthma attacks as I used to. Back when I worked for Benilde, it was a nightmare trying to keep a lid on my health, what with the stress of commuting coupled with the oh-so-joyous weather patterns of our tropical island paradise.

I'm looking out the window now, wondering how long before the rain hits. The cloud cover is total, and there's no wind at all.

Something from [info]purploony:

If there is a person you'd want to hug and remind them that no matter how bad life gets, you still love them, repost this.

... er, guys, just that italicized segment, hmm? Not my whole entry. =p

an injury and a movie [Sep. 29th, 2005|11:54 pm]
I hate having a busted lip.

I made the mistake of biting it when it was very dry, so it cracked and bled badly. For this past week I've been looking and feeling like I got into a fistfight. Aside from making eating a rather trying endeavor, I also have a semipermanent half-pout going. I look alternately silly and beat up.

I find myself thankful that I'm not seeing anyone at the moment. I know there's more to affection and intimacy than locking lips (or touching them to different body parts), but it's such a cornerstone of the experience. Basic sensuality goes hand-in-hand with mouths.

I watched the press screening of Corpse Bride earlier tonight, and I enjoyed myself a great deal. It's a very eccentric film, but also very accessible. This is the natural evolution of Tim Burton's narrative style, and for those of you who liked A Nightmare Before Christmas, you're in for quite the treat.

There were some moments that felt a bit overplayed and slightly dated (players of the old Grim Fandango computer game will feel like they're watching GF's tripped out second cousin), but all in all the film made for a good story. It's one of those films you shouldn't miss because it's such a curious spectacle. And yes, that's a good thing.

tiny vessels, DCfC [Sep. 26th, 2005|08:38 pm]
This is the moment that you know
That you told you loved her but you don't.
You touch her skin and then you think
That she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.
Yeah, she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.

I spent two weeks in Silverlake
The California sun cascading down my face
There was a girl with light brown streaks
And she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.
Yeah she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.

Wanted to believe in all the words that i was speaking
As we moved together in the dark
And all the friends that i was telling
And all the playful misspellings
And every bite i gave you left a mark

Tiny vessels oozed into your neck
And formed the bruises
That you said you didn't want to fade
But they did and so did i that day

All i see are dark grey clouds
In the distance moving closer with every hour
So when you ask "was something wrong?"
That i think "you're damn right there is but we can't talk about it now.
No, we can't talk about it now."

So one last touch and then you'll go
And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more
But it was vile, and it was cheap
And you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me
Yeah you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me

shakespeare and rep phil [Sep. 24th, 2005|11:36 pm]
I got to watch Repertory Philippines' production of The Taming of the Shrew earlier, and it was very entertaining. They set it up to play out in traditional Shakespearean fashion, which meant that all the roles were portrayed by men, the direction of their acting faced the audience more often than not (the absence of the "fourth wall" in theater), and their portrayals were decidedly more outlandish than what is de rigueur for theater today.

Joel Trinidad prefaced the show with a mild explanation of what they were up to, since apparently there were a lot of students present in the audience. Aside from explaining what I already mentioned, he also explained that The Taming of the Shrew is, of course, a product of its time. I'm sure Rep didn't want the students coming away with the impression that breaking a woman's will to become subservient is a view they happily espouse on stage, hence the amusing micro-lecture he gave about both Shakespearean theatre and Elizabethan perceptions of a wife's "proper" role.

The audience loved the whole thing, of course. While admittedly not a whole lot of them were reacting to the parts steeped in relatively obscure wordplay (and to think Shrew is one of the Bard's more, ah, vernacular creations), they did get most of it, if their laughter at most of the right moments was any indication. That's a good sign to me that the doomsayers about today's youth aren't completely right in their assertions that kids these days are uncouth, uncultured, and devoid of classic wit.

Postscript: I wrote a follow-up entry in my Blurty on a tangent from this one. Go take a look.
