1:15 pm - vacation
I'm briefly in Madison for a quick post Gen Con vacation; Thursday I'll be heading out to Minneapolis to see more friends and family, and then back to Seattle on Sunday. It's been a bit odd to see all the construction around town; buildings missing like Ogg, Peterson, and a slew of buildings near Union South. The old hilldale theater is gone. The building where University Square was is almost done; we went to the food court there for lunch today. I expect it to be quite a popular place once the students return.

The plan is to relax and learn all the new board games that I have access to right now. The big one from the show was Agricola, which is fantastic -- I ended up playing it (I think) four times during the evenings at the show, thanks to [info]doubtofbuddha. Mark R., who was up from Cleveland and is also staying in Madison, brought a couple more games. I played 1960, a game set during the 1960 election (Kennedy and Nixon). Not bad, but restricted to only two players. Both are from Z-Man games (some being repackaging from Europe) and they are 3 for 3 with me when you include Pandemic. Fantastic board games.

I'm looking forward to trying out Alchemist from Mayfair in the next few days; it looks like a game I'll enjoy. Mark has brought some other games, but the names are currently escaping me.

Heading out to GenCon tomorrow, and then a week long vacation in Madison and Minneapolis to see friends and family. It'll be the first time that I'll be back since I moved out here in January.

Looking forward to it!

I'll be in Madison between Sunday evening to some time Thursday, when I plan to take a greyhound to Minneapolis. Erk, I haven't ridden a bus from Madison to Minneapolis since about 1999 -- that's something I'm not looking forward to. Not sure what I'll be doing just yet; I think I'll be going to the Minnesota state fair that weekend; I don't remember the last time I went there.

9:19 pm
I had my camera out on the table today at work and I accidently caught myself on the power cord, causing it to fall. Now the lens is askew and won't retract; not sure if it can focus properly anymore. Grrr. It's five years old, but I really didn't want to get a new camera just yet. Heck -- my microwave is 16 years old. If it ain't broke... Well, now my camera is broke. (I had the camera out to try a new way to do miniature art orders; I think it's going to be a big improvement on how to communicating miniature poses to the concept artist.)

Left work at 8pm tonight to come outside to see my rear tire flat again. The Renton roads are littered with broken glass on my route, it seems. The bicycle place was closed so I'll have to fix it tomorrow; I did get about half way home before the tire was too flat.

At least I didn't have to walk home in the rain; it started raining just about the time I got home.

Work has been good, but incredibly busy.

8:32 pm - How could I not be aware of this until today?!?
I am deeply disappointed in my miniature geek skills today.

8:17 pm - music community networking
Due to all the CDs I picked up, I remembered an invitation to an online music tracking/social networking thing that mr Tulach invited to me shortly before I got to Seattle. (I didn't really have time to look into it until now!) It's actually quite impressive; it's supposedly able to get your iTunes information and basically analyze it (which hasn't quite worked for me yet because they've had some server issues the last week.)

The place is last.fm and I'm ptlee on there.

It's like myspace, but with a purpose. ;)

10:27 pm - music
Went to dinner tonight with Chris and Logan. On the way we stopped by Silver Platters, a local CD/DVD store that is closing one of the stores (the Tukwila branch) and therefore is having a 30% - 40% sale. I consider myself a poorly educated progressive rock fan, namely that most of my favorite bands (Enchant, Marillion, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc) all have roots in the genre, but I don't have as wide of a collection as I would like.

The biggest sin, of course, being that I have but one Rush album, Counterparts.

Anyone who knows Chris Tulach should realize what happens next.

Where I ramble on about what I ended up purchasing... )

11:11 pm - words?
Things have been going well here in Renton/Seattle. The cats have settled in quite well, even though it's a smaller place than what they are used to. We have the advantage of a picture window that overlooks some trees, so there is some bird activity to keep them entertained. Also, Gen's been at home while jobsearching, so kitties have someone to keep them entertained, especially Oedi -- who's a real lap hog.

I'm quite happy to be able to say that I've been able to keep up with biking to work. It's a little bit longer of a trip; 25 min there/45 min home as opposed to the 20 minutes/20 minutes that I had in Madison. Unfortunately, I've been eating too much, and I've gained about 15 pounds. Back to about where I was two years ago in three months, so I need to get on top of that. Grr. Some of that is probably muscle mass due to the very large hill that I bike up every day, but when the goal is to get rid of the geek spare tire, portion control is probably going to be the best solution. I don't think my lunch intake has changed much, but dinners have been larger. Sigh. I did get out to use the elliptical today at our apartment's workout room; once the weather warms up a little more I'll be able to start running again.

Work seems to be going well, but it's pretty non-stop intense, especially with the release of 4th edition in a few months. As a result, I haven't had a lot of feedback with the work I've done, as development for most of my projects hasn't started until about now. I don't have a good feeling on what I can talk about and what I can't talk about, so the best thing for me to do is keep on the quiet side for now.

Got a much needed haircut yesterday. At one point it looked like I had a mohawk on the back half of my head.

10:32 pm - The big guy
Alas, I have been pretty quiet since I arrived here in Seattle. I've been thinking about sitting down and saying hello for a while, but in between busy days at work and busy days unpacking and arranging, I just haven't budgeted the time for an entry. Thought I better say something today.

Well, I didn't touch the network for a few days, but today I messed with it all again and for some reason it's all working now. I don't get it, but I won't complain.

Lack of space with the new apartment is causing me to try to make any space possible. The bookshelf full of DVDs that I had in Madison took up quite a bit of space. I picked up a few books for storing DVDs (the ones where you slide disks into sleeves) and that will take up a lot less space.

Still lots to do.

1:10 am - ugh.
Been wrestling trying to get my wireless stuff working again, but it's not playing well with the new cable modem. Any advice? Tried cloning my mac's MAC address on the wireless but that didn't help, but I'm not sure I did it correctly.

3:27 pm - I am alive...
In Seattle; I found a coffee shop down the street from the new apartment that has wifi access. Yay! It's not Starbucks -- I have two(!) Starbucks closer to my place than this place, but those don't have free wifi -- some T-Mobile thing that you need to pay to use. I'm guessing that the free wifi is what they have to do to stand out from such a recognizable name -- it's why I'm here.

I've been wandering around the new neighborhood trying to get to know the neighborhood. The closest store is probably a tie between Safeway (a decent grocer) and a Papa Murphy's. Most everything is within a short walk, but I'll definitely miss not having a nearby hardware store, which was really nice for those artistic nights.

While wandering around, I got a call from the moving company -- it sounds like my stuff may be arriving as soon as Tuesday, which is excellent! I was prepared to live for a week or two without it.

Slept surprisingly well last night. I packed an air mattress and a collection of my bed stuff so it's pretty easy to sleep. The place is pretty good, but I realize I'm going "backwards" from owning to renting, and the utilities aren't as new as I would like. I'd guess some are from the 80s. The swimming pool looks to be really good, so that's exciting. I've wanted to pick up more swimming and I know that Gen has as well, so yay for that.

Chris picked me up at the airport and drove my sorry ass around for quite a bit of the day to get to the apartment and some minor things like a shower curtain. We ended up at Rodney Thompson's place to watch the Seahawk/Packers game and later for some board games. We played Ticket to Ride Switzerland, the pirate coin game Pieces of Eight, and a flying game Wings of War (which was very cool.) Finished up by watching most of The Rock, a movie I hadn't had the chance to see yet. Good action movie.

Going to try to do some painting tonight. Going to write some emails before wandering around some more.

In Minneapolis, made it through without much trouble due to an overturned gas tanker in downtown Minneapolis. Kitties are happy I'm here.

Moving van comes tomorrow, err.... I guess it's now today. Not sure what time yet. Not quite ready yet, but I'm looking forward to this stage being done.

Ugh. packing a lot. I've pretty much fallen of the face of the earth here, sorry.

The moving vans come either Tuesday or Wednesday, and I drive to Minneapolis that evening. I fly to Seattle on Saturday; super rock-star Mr. Tulach is graciously picking me up at the airport and driving me to the new apartment. I start the new job next Monday; 7 days from today. Not sure when the moving van will arrive with all our stuff...

Lots to do tomorrow.

And that political quiz... )

I have my parents' van for these last few days in Madison to help with fixing up my place (and more precisely, getting rid of furniture.) It pretty much costs as much to ship an assembled bookcase as it would be to buy a new one, for example. So -- I have a crapton of those cheap bookcases that you get at shopko sorts of places. If anybody wants them, I'm letting them go for $10-$20 for 3-6 feet tall bookshelves. Also have a pretty nice kitchen table I may be getting rid of (will know once I know if I will be in a 2 or 3 bedroom place) and an airdyne exercise bike I bought before I got my real bike. oh, some tv stands. I'm willing to get rid of my 36" TV as it is a flat-screen tube and VERY heavy. old fish tank.

I may be able to drive some of this stuff to Minneapolis, but most will need to go to Madison people.
