My daughter is encouraging me to start up a facebook account, but I find I already have my plate full just vaguely managing to keep up with LJ... Have any of you ventured into Facebook? What makes it any different from here?

Also much happiness here as we've finally a new pastor and he and his family are moving here this week - they'll be staying with *us* for the next week or so until a rental house is available for them, which gives us a whopping 10 people plus randomly cycling friends and visitors. Somehow I foresee a lot of time spent in the kitchen!

Yikes...getting down into the 30s at night... time to finish patching the holes in my greenhouse so I can bed down my plant children for the winter. Duct-tape is my friend.

Just a reminder:
Today is "Day O'Classic #3 - the Electric Pertwee Boogaloo" ! Yippie!

This is a day for all of the 'old school' folks to post enough goodies on LJ that for at least a fractional moment they will outweigh the endless tidal flood of NuWho drek. Anything One-Eight is fair game. Go forth and post, just remember it needs to be a place picked up by who_daily to count.

And hugs to all my non-Who friends with the quizzical, baffled looks. *waves* I haven't forgotten you.

I was out picking another bucket of apples, just thinking about how amazingly lovely the colors are on the gravensteins, the green on the side away from the sun, the golden tints on the other with streaks of perfect red gradually blooming over them as they ripen. They cluster together on the tree, small, surrounded sometimes by the dust-scented brown crumbles of the old spring blooms, a few ambitious young spiderwebs. I just fit under our tree without too much stooping, threading my arms up through the branches and fruiting spurs to reach the ripest of each, hoping to leave the companions for another day.

I don't always manage it, of course. A gentle twist of the stem brings off the end of the spur, all three apples with it, or a tug on the reddest showers me in a brief hail of greener globes. I bend and gather them all up, sorting the usable into my bucket. Most of them are usable - like people, nearly all have some good in them if you can pare away the bad. It's only a very tiny number that must go into my debris bin, and those usually weren't 'bad apples' either, I just didn't find them before the birds did, or before their bruising fall has overtaken them. Even then, I only toss them with regret.

My large bucket is full of fruit, brimming, heavy to carry. I balance just a couple more on top. I've done applesauce, apple-butter, apple-crisp. These will be pies, sliced, filled and frozen for wintertime, when this little tree will be brown and dark with rain and barren. For now the sun is warm on my shoulders and there are bits of leaves in my hair, the breeze is scented of cedar and fir and apples and I am glad you are with me.

An odd little piece for my who-friends... from the dw100 drabble community.

Title: Snowman
Author: Primsong
Rating: G
Characters: Two, Jamie
Summary: In truth, I couldn't choose which Second Doctor title to use for inspiration, so I used them all. The only word I couldn't shoehorn into a drabble was 'snowman' (though I did get 'abominable')…hence the title.

All together now... )

At long last it looks like we might be getting a new pastor at our little church - been 'without' since January, but it's been a pretty good transitional time - It helps when the previous one had to step down for family stuff, not because of some issue or scandal. We have a guy coming in from Pennsylvania beginning of Sept... Everyone's nervous as cats about cleaning up the church/grounds and symbolically polishing the communal boots before he gets here, funny how that works, the maybe-pastor is probably just as nervous if not moreso. ;-) He better have a good sense of humor or he'll never survive us, we have some real 'wits' running around in there.

Old Subaru went belly-up - today we bring home a new-to-us 20+ yr. old Volvo 240 wagon... I want to paint it something other than boring blue, maybe like a hippie bus or a stained glass lamp.

Much happiness in my whodom that my Three/Jo tales are being well-received, now to gather my courage and try to write something for Two, Jamie and Zoe. Two keeps running around in my head rubbing his hands together and wanting to go on an adventure, if I could just figure out what that adventure is... need to bribe the muse to speak up!

I was intrigued by this little writer's meme, thanks Meneleth.

Writing, Breathing...what's the difference? )

Also, does anyone else really get irked that they have to stop writing long enough to get groceries and generally take care of their family? I need someone to hire a maid service to dust around me as I scribble sometimes.

In other news, Rosie and Ic are settled into their new house (sort of - cardboard city!) about 10-15 minutes from me, and we're all going to the lake this week. Yay!

Backstory:
My grandparents passed on some time ago. Grandad's fave flower was carnations, Grandma was known for her amazing garden (among other things), and they were central pillars of their small farming town.

Most memorial days, I manage to get over to the little rural cemetery where I leave a small potted white carnation and a tomato plant on their graves. Grandma was practical - she wouldn't want be to waste money on cut flowers, lol... I always assumed the little tomato start probably sat there and eventually dried out and was thrown away.

Today:
I had a reason to call up my aunt on that side of the family - an unusual thing, as we don't really talk that often... and she mentioned making a bouquet to take to a memorial that week. I mentioned leaving the carnation and tomato. She almost screamed into the phone - THAT WAS YOU???! 0.o

Then she went on to tell me how for years in this small town they've been trying to figure out who leaves the tomato. Seems the groundskeep takes it home each year and plants it in his garden. She found out when she took it home herself one year and he told her at church "Someone took my tomato plant!" X-D

The years I hadn't made it out there they'd thought someone else must have taken it first.

She said there were several theories, including a great story in which someone used to sneak into Grandma's garden and steal her tomatoes so they were leaving it as a sort of penance or guilt offering. Last year someone named Jesse died, so when I didn't get out there this year the rumor mill was that "It must have been Jesse! There's no tomato this year."

Of course this means I better be darn sure to get that tomato start out there each Memorial Day now, lol... That old groundskeep needs his veggies.

Hee....

Wow, we just got the news that Icarus got the job! He was staying with us last week for the interviews and he and I ran around with a realtor so I could be "Rosie's eyes". More house-hunting this week, what fun to kick the tires on houses when I don't have to be the one working at moving.

Lots of BIG houses, the more bathrooms the better. She and Ic are coming back with the two littlest ones to look at houses again, they're getting to be right at home here. Who knew an online acquaintanceship could lead to this?

Looks like a fine adventure - Rosie & Icarus and their generous passel of kids are on vacation coming to the Oregon coast... and guess where they're ALL staying tonight? Yup, Hotel Prim.

I have every bed I can possibly put together done up and did a run to the local thrift store for a few more blankets and pillows and bought some big prefab lasagnas. Should be fun. They'll come through again next week on their way back home to CO, and Ic has an interview out here as part of the journey. Who knows? Maybe we'll end up neighbors.

Yippee - we just got our (signed!) Beecake cd, and it's all lovely Billy sweetness. Only five songs on this debut, but they're five *good* songs. Love his voice.

From what I've read, seems Dom was responsible for the naming of the band too - ha!

Egads - it's been five bloomin' weeks since I've updated this... Lots happening, so I thought I'd drop in an entry. Two major things happened, one was my grandma who'd had a stroke has (finally) been settled into an assisted living place near her home. )

The other major thing was we just bought a condo: Yikes! I'm a landlady! )

That's all for now - which is plenty, I think. Hope everyone else is having a more 'normal' January-Feb.

Just had our music leader call me from Reno where she is completely socked in by a blizzard - "Sorry for the last minute notice, but needless to say I won't be there to lead the worship tomorrow morning..."

*facepalm* Oh no...not another round of my trying to lead the congregation acapella... Here's hoping I at least will have a guitarist.

I tell ya, there are times having a small church is great, and there are times I really envy those warehouses with a gajillion instrumentalists in them... momentarily...

I'm teaching about John Calvin tomorrow (a guy who really isn't as bad as his reputation makes him) and the Swiss Reformation - but first a little mindless wandering on LJ.

It's that time again, time to put up shiny new calendars and wonder what all those little blank boxes will be filled with before the year is over. Nothing reflects our hectic family life better than those little squares sometimes, especially on days when there are so many things rammed in it it gets hard to read.

After finally managing to wrestle the naked Christmas tree out the door and flipping it off the deck to deal with later, I finished my gingerbread creation today - Now to get some decent pictures of it.

Congrats to Agape and Lin for their wins in the MEFAs! I got a second-place in Mysteries with my Bilbo tale, 'Stone of Erebor' - Bilbo and I were most pleased. :-)

My cat is in my lap stretching out her adorable little white toes. Hard to beat cuteness like that. Aww....

It's been much too long since I managed to post on LJ, yikes, though I do get by to lurk at least somewhat, enjoying seeing what everyone is up to. Almost the end of another year!

Lots gone by... dad stuff (we ended up giving away the business for a dollar), lost two of our parakeets and now I'm helping my folks with my Grandma who recently had a stroke and is kind of 'not there' for the most part - plus she keeps undressing, lol... that part is kind of funny. What a year, eh? Sounds par for the course for a lot of you.

The church history class I've been teaching has pretty much sucked up the writing time as I'm constantly having to stay ahead with notes, handouts and essays on the various events and personalities. This next week should be fun - Zwingli and the Swiss Reformation plus one of my favorites, Erasmus, next week I get to tackle Henry VIII. Still, I'm really missing my 'fun writing time', reduced to drabbles and the occasional poem is thin rations.

Also working on a gingerbread creation for our Tolkien-inspired Gingerbread contest - anyone who wants to join in is welcome to, good fun. I've never made gingerbread before in my life, but last night found me installing a floor for the tomb of the Stewards and adding dead kings in marshmallow. Heh. We've had an amazing chocolate-gingerbread Meduseld submitted already. Deadline isn't til Jan. 7, if you want to join in.

Looks like everyone managed to survive Christmas so far - now for New Years! (yay) Here's to a fine year ahead, better than any of us are hoping (or dreading?).

One last trip to Maui, comin' right up... My dad's internment is this Friday, with the parade following on Saturday morning so my 'farewell' trip has started. Thankfully, I'm not alone - my brother will be on the island most of the time and I have a travel companion, a sweet lady from church who has never been which is a helpful distraction. Better to play tour guide and go parasailing than to mope, sez I.

I'm reading some of my dad's poetry at his internment, couldn't think of anything better than his own words.

Here's a rather nice article in the Maui News about the stick horse race, now in his memory: )

I'm the 'daughter' referred to, by my maiden name - I get to present a fancy prize to little kids and thus finally prove that I am not Don Ho's daughter, lol...

As to the store, we couldn't find a buyer in time and had to do a rapid, interesting liquidation of the inventory that is thankfully over with now - but we still have the business name, logo, client list, etc. so some dribble may yet come in...and believe it or not, someone came and pulled out that blasted huge hot-tub on the last day and hauled it off in his truck, hoorah! Sorry if any of you were planning on showing up this week to claim it. ;-)

Subject:Free hot tub...

Current Mood:[mood icon] tired
Maui is truly another world. We have a big ol' hot tub at the back of my dad's store and you think we can get rid of it? We can't even *GIVE* it away. Seems the islands are awash in hot tubs. Folks pay to have them shipped from the mainland, then they move away or upgrade and it costs too much to ship them again. So they're everywhere, too common. No one seems to want his gas range either for similar reasons.

Free hot tub. You haul. I'll even help you yank it out if you come in July.

In other notes, we found the state claimed my dad's savings as backtaxes for a business tax he had been on a payment plan for. We've now found paperwork to show they should have only had claim to half that amount, they say the rest were 'fees'... more phone calls ahead, and vague, sputtering hope but not much.

Things are going from bad to grim. The state of Hawaii just seized my dad's entire savings. We have nothing left but the value of whatever inventory we can sell if no one wants the customer base and business. I've contacted our lawyer to see if anything can be done, but I expect not, governments being what they are.

:-(

Someone post me something cheerful, please.

My brother and I had to hire more than one person along the way to make sense of all the records my dad left behind of his business, inventory and contacts. We've finally got it done and all papers, records, affadavits, certificates, etc. done and the business is listed for sale -

Within two days of our listing it, the landlord reneged on his former promises that we could keep the store for the summer at the same rent rate my dad was paying him all these years, to have time to sell the business... but he is now *tripling* the rent as of the first of July.

We've suddenly gone from "whew, listed at last, now maybe things are looking up" to "$@%&@!"

My brother has flown back to Maui to shove things into boxes and arrange a storage facility for the inventory, to find a moving company, to work with our suddenly panicked broker, to rally my dad's friends to help us box and move things.

My dad would have roasted that man over a slow fire, without benefit of marinade. As my brother said to him, "We aren't a retail store! We're just some relatives trying to do what's right to resolve this. We don't have that kind of cash." The response? "Well....er....."

Aiyiyi. We haven't even gotten his ashes interred yet and already we've lost his store, probably to someone very upscale and not at all fitting with the old cowboy town. My heart just hurts. I hate greed. Hate it, hate it!
