a giant problem: beyond the spiderwick chronicles ii by holly black & tony diterlizzi.

i really like tony diterlizzi's art; this isn't a secret. that is what brought me to the spiderwick chronicles originally. i liked the first series, & i especially liked the ancillary materials for it. i got the first of the beyond spiderwick books at book expo, & i wasn't too thrilled. the story was out of nowhere, the characters were paper cut outs, & the kids from the first series of books were in it for no particularly good reason. this volume fixes all those complaints; in fact i quite liked it. there is a plan, everyone has a chance to shine, new characters don't act foolish, the parental tension isn't overwrought tomfoolery, so forth. this book gets its feet under it. i dug it, & now am bummed i have to wait for the next.

    Never Leave The House
Today I went to Wolverhampton in order to hand in my certificate exempting me from taking the written assessment for a job with the JCP (not because I have learning difficulties you understand, but because I already did the assessment before). I arrived in Wolves early so I wandered about for almost an hour before turning up at the Molyneux football ground (the odd venue for the assessment). Except this: It was the wrong football ground.
The assessment was actually due to take place at The Hawthorns football ground in West Bromwich. I had been confused by the fact that they’d put a map of Wolverhampton in the envelope when they’d sent me the letter. So walk-of-annoying-length to the metro station for a ride into West Brom which was followed by another walk-of-annoying length to The Hawthorns. When I arrived, they apologised for the mix-up, took a copy of my certificate and asked me if I’d be able to attend an interview next Wednesday. That was it. I was out of the house for four hours for a procedure which took all of five minutes.
On my way back, I stopped in McDonald’s. Say what you like about the food but when you’re cold, tired and hungry – a quarterpounder with cheese tastes like it was made by Jesus his own bad self.
Then I came home and made some fairly awful crispy fried Quorn which was so salty that our eyeballs dehydrated and we went blind.
    Then we died.

friday was laundry; still waiting on my payback! well, to be fair, i'm also still waiting to hang all my shirts up. then pumpkin bear & chicken pad thai for the whitest we've ever been. saturday i snuck into chinatown, smuggled jenny out & uptown to meet meryl to watch nick & nora's infinite playlist. i'm invested in michael cera showing some backbone. some range. he's going to be scott pilgrim, & scott pilgrim is absolutely awesome, so...the awkward adorable thing is great, but only works as a facet. there was some effort towards having a spine. mostly the movie was ultra saccarine but still good, & the grossest movie since trainspotting. then to alicia's birthday. sunday was game of course, & when i came home jenny & carla were hanging out, & robert eventually came over. mostly i ended up arguing over who was better, superman or jesus. carla was wrong! so was robert! well, okay, spider-man is pretty great.

oubliette session fifteen: the crystal ship is waiting there.

the session had left off with the party (balthazar, bedwin, damocles, lorelai & mathio) trying to figure out how to deal with the goblins garglebella & guttykins. the two had been ousted from the company of their master, the lobescubber. he charged them with the task that which ever of their rats cross the finish line last would win the position of his lieutenant. the goblins fucked, loudly, but come morning there was no resolution. they parted ways!

& the party crossed the miles of nomansland in notimeflat. clipping barbed wire & ducking jumping landmines. they got to the lake of alkaline to find it wreathed in mustard gas, & three goblins waiting near a glass boat. a twelve foot tall goblin named "mister 'orrible" seemed to be the leader, as well as gremlins first class 99 & 47. balthazar & mathio cleared the lake of mustard gas, through an ingenious use of vaccuum tubes & pedaling. meanwhile, the goblins & the humans shuffled each other across the lake: it was tricky. the goblins clearly would have attacked the humans if they'd outnumbered them. a solution presented itself in time (& they watched garglebella & guttykins race by, having simply switched rats, the thought-process of the party eventually leading them to the solution) & our party now was at the foot of the karnak city made of jewels.

they snuck around in the guts of the city: the walls had gargoyles bleching acid (which ought to have been blood). the crystal struts that were unbroken had huge demons trapped within; the broken ones, even more ominously, didn't. the doors were embossed with orichalk. in time, crossing platforms (with a little "light kidnapping" of balthazar), they met: the imperial malefactor. staring at a demon of the firmament. the malefactor's job is to make sure that if anything starts to get out of hand it is...taken care of. they took to the malefactor, & he took to them: he set them up with a room! they were led there by black suited goblins with blue glasses. when he asked lorelai what she needed she said "nothing at present" but he heard "a present," so he had the captive human, authedio, brought to them! authedio however was slated to the fatal lottery tommorow. pick the black marble, death, pick white, life. unfortunately, the new lieutenant garglebella (so they were told) had it in for him & had switched the marbles to both be black. doom! (also, damocles & bedwin messed with the ghosts & demons)

then they met the lobescrubber! he literally crackled with eldritch such-like & what-not. he had an overbite & thought they were all full of nonsense at first. sort of like willy wonka, come to think of it. eventually he fell to quizzing them about demilion in malake. what! that shouldn't have been working! &..."fermented blood!" karnak magic! in exchange for answers, he enlisted them to capture the creature at the root of the demilion theme. to balthazar he spoke of RAM as RED, PERL as GREEN, & URTH as BLUE, & astral as solipsism. to damocles, who wished to rescue authedio he said "tell him to swallow the marble." lorelai wanted to know about the three comets, & the lobescrubber gave her the savant's map, marked with the landing/crashing points of the coming karnak stars. bedwin wanted to know about the bloody ghosts, & so he saw the karnak amalgam, ghosts sharing blood transfusions. oh what a lovely time. now to the iron engine!

hi ho, hi ho, the goblinking is me.
    orcs by stan micholls.

this gorgeous omnibus (the pages are lined with red gilt-- what is the word for that?) collects a series: bodyguard of lightning, legion of thunder, & warriors of the tempest. i still say that the title of the first one, bodyguard... doesn't make any sense, since they never actually are a bodyguard even a little bit. to get to the grit of the matter: i liked this. it wasn't brilliant, but it did end up sucking me in to the narrative.

the core conceit is pretty simple: lets "humanize" the orcs. the biggest problem with the book lies there, too: it really humanizes the orcs. they aren't in any way convincingly "othered." they mostly exist as a cross between pop vikings & idealized american aborigines. so yeah, there is a bunch of "noble savage" here. i will say this though: i can see the appeal of the noble savage, & maybe it is excusable in this case. see, stan nicholls doesn't make the rest of the world rose tinted. humans lay across a range-- zealots, ignorant, accepting, tolerant, whatever. the "old races," the demi-humans, also show plenty of expression, from the mercenary kobolds, to the fanatical trolls, & the proud centaurs, so on, so forth. there aren't any homilies about perfect life. you could make the argument that the orcs are taking advantage of being imaginary, non-human creatures to act as an expression of "the noble savage" that isn't offensive.

the over-story is a cross between a tolkien-esque macguffin quest ("we need the five instrumentalities!") & a colonization parable. the humans have started making headway into the new world, & the other races that already live there are feeling the crush. i'm pretty pleased with his boiling down of religious overtones: there are the "mani," who are the pantheists, & the "uni," who are the monotheists. each have their bad guys-- the mani have their witch queen (a major villain) & the uni have their intolerant firebrand (the other big villain). oh, & the bounty-hunters, who keep popping up. the plot is pretty well paced; i had no problems picking it up, putting it down, or reading in jags.

a quick note on feminism. i think this book does pretty well with females. the first case is the female orc. there is only one in the warband, & there seems to be social dimorphism between the orc males & females (the females raising hatchlings) but her gender never effects the story except when it would reasonably do so. meanwhile among the humans you see the acknowledgment of differences in how sexism can play out-- the two big cases being the daughter of the uni leader, & the leader of the "good" mani settlement. there are some mentions of rape in this books-- the bounty hunters rape a woman & decide not to rape the female orc, & the witch queen rapes some of her sacrificial victims. it is a little bit casual, but not underplayed. as in, these are very bad people doing very bad things.

narrative-wise, the end seems pretty rushed. all of a sudden they are far away! & oh, demons, even though they've never been in the book before (at least they were mentioned). & this guy & that girl, mister & miz macguffin (who also were only mentioned or briefly cameo'ed). & somehow, all of the bad guys have also managed to catch up with them! it seemed crammed together. still, it didn't wreck anything for me. i should mention before i go my favorite thing about the series! the orcs don't let themselves become tricked by cheap dramatic conventions. if one of them over hears, for instance, the bad guy praying? & that bad guy talks about how he has a sacred relic, & how he's going to go to war with the trolls for another relic, etc? the guy who heard will go to the other orcs & be like "listen, i heard this guy talk about a relic-- maybe it is that thing we're looking for! also, he mentioned the trolls-- they might have the other one? i thought it might be important." thanks for not being lazy with the foreshadowing & instead having the orcs be pretty with it.

I Can't Go Back To Savoury Now
On Sunday we almost always do exactly the same thing: We sit down for Sunday dinner with my parents and my grandmother. Sometimes it’s chicken, sometimes pork and occasionally beef although Gran’s false teeth have a hell of time with the latter. One thing that’s always consistent though is that there’s always Yorkshire Pudding.
Unfortunately, not all the Yorkshire Puddings are eaten – a fact which can go undiscovered until after dessert has been served and duly consumed. What to do? It’s a terrible shame to waste a good Yorkshire Pudding but how can you go back to savoury after you’ve just had the sweet?
It’s a practically universal dilemma and one summed up with heart-breaking eloquence by Mr John Shuttleworth. Takeit away, John:

My advice: Put jam in the Yorkshire Puddings and transform them from savoury treat to appetising sweet delight.

    Friday Of Shit
Well friends, It’s been a strange old day. Much of it has been spent investigating the curious world of being-a-guy-with-a-website. I really can’t overestimate my ignorance in this area and to illustrate this, let me tell you what I found out for the first time today:
    • You can’t register a domain name for free.
    • A thing called ‘web hosting’ exists
    • There’s an easy way and a hard way of creating a website.
    • The easy way is very expensive.
    • A thing called ‘web hosting’ can cost a lot of money.

After much investigating, I’ve found a good piece of free website design software, a thing that will host my potential site for free (with banner ads) and a site which will register my domain name for less than three quid (because I don’t want a Subdomain).
    Now I am wise.

I have also been making sauces, namely: BBQ sauce and Cantonese Curry Sauce. I have learned this as a result:
    • Never crush shallots in a garlic crusher.
    • Crushed shallots create a kind of stinging gas.
    • Don’t start making BBQ sauce before checking whether or not you have pasata.
    • Never start making BBQ sauce before checking whether or not you have black treacle.
    • Never whistle while you’re pissing.

Also [info]aliminx requested that people provide her with samples of their handwriting for some foul and unknown purpose. I like this idea very much so perhaps you would all like to do the same. Write me a special message, perhaps in ink, blood or faecal matter and put it in a comment.

I’ll start off with my submission:

forgotten realms player's guide by wizards of the coast.

this is an interesting book-- rather than get you to buy one big forgotten realms tome, they split it into a campaign guide & a player's guide. not a bad way to go, actually. i could see wanting this book. there is one new race, the genasai. i'm kind of conflicted about them. maybe they have too much variety built in? i guess they just aren't as "tidy" as the other races, & that makes them harder to think about. still, the elemental aspects, & the ability to switch them with feats-- it is neat. i could see wanting to give it a go. there is a new class-- the spellsword. okay, pile on the new classes, guys! i don't mind. & a new pact for warlocks. what that means is that those predictions? the answers to the common complaint that there wasn't a lot of diversity? seems to be correct. there are going to be lots of new material in each of the new books. this includes the paragon paths, too. less so the epic destiny, which is kind of just a modified "demigod" with a slot for each deity. there is a...how to call it? multi-class template. powers only available through the multi-class route. it is an interesting pitch; i'd have to see it playtested (or playtest it myself) to tell you whether or not it works. i'm less excited about the feats: they are basically a ton of "channel divinity" feats for the forgotten realms pantheon. all in all? if you want the information in this book, you should get it, but otherwise it isn't all that crucial.

    Reader, Meet Author
Today I’ve applied for a grand total of fifteen jobs, although I’ve already had feedback from four of those that the positions have already been filled. Sod this for a game of soldiers, I’ll do some more tomorrow.

    Now for more listen-o-tronning…

Brian Eno – Here Come The Warm Jets: Any way you paint it, this is a dizzying record and incorporates an amazing diversity of styles. Due to my own bias, I was most fond of the tracks which had a doo-wop slant but there’s so much going on here that anyone listening to this could probably find something which excites them. It goes without saying perhaps that there’s practically no overall cohesion to the album but that’s in no way a negative criticism. This is bold adventurous stuff and I find it genuinely astonishing that this was recorded in 1973!

Rufus Wainwright – Release The Stars: The first thing to strike me about the songs on this record is how big they sound. Considering that this quite far from the sort of thing I usually enjoy, I was just flat out impressed by this. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I like it, but I was definitely impressed by the composition and production of this record. Rufus sounds to me like Thom Yorke would sound if Yorke could sing.

The Prodigy – World’s On Fire & Warrior’s Dance: ‘Ver Prodge have always been one of those bands(?) which I always enjoy hearing, though I’ve never bought anything by them, the sole exception being the ‘Breathe’ single. I think there’s a thin line which separates being a fan of something and just liking it. The difference being how re-listenable you find something. While I always enjoy The Prodigy when I hear them, I never go out of my way to do so although having said that, if any track was going to change my mind it might well be Warrior’s Dance. Also, as time goes on, John Robb and Keith Flint appear to be merging into the same person.

Orlog – Renigende Feuer: First off, there’s nothing even halfway original here. Second off, this is Black Metal, so what do you expect? To be more specific; this is pure 2nd Generation Black Metal with frostbitten guitars, arctic vocals and iceblasting drums. Superior fare perhaps and a little more melodic than most of their peers but certainly nothing that hadn’t already been done by Darkthrone, The Craft, Ashen Light, ad infernum.

…and I’ve still got more stuff to listen to tomorrow. I can feel my inner core of sanity beginning to disassemble.

Okay radical dudes, now for the thing which is this thing:

It struck me today that nothing inspires me to write quite like Livejournal. I don’t know why but if I put as much effort into writing fiction as I do scribbling here, I’d have an oeuvre to rival Barbara Cartland by now. What I need is an online outlet which will encourage me to do more than just blog. I’ve got a ton of stuff which is half-formed: Fictional writing, non-fiction writing, music, photographs and even a few ideas for some humorous videos.
To the end of fully-forming those things I’m going to ‘do’ a website except this: I dunno anything about doing that. Now, while I’m sure I’ll find everything I need to know online, I would quite like to get it right first time which is why I’m appealing to all of you for any tips or ideas you might have.
What constitutes good or bad website design? What else should I bear in mind? What questions am I not asking which I should be asking and what are the answers to those as-yet unasked questions? Uwaaa?

I recently won a hundred bucks ($100) on Powerball. I almost one ten grand; four numbers correct, and only one off on the actual Powerball. Still, a cool hundred was a nice surprise. So i spent it on shit!

I've basically been working, and i haven't decided where i stand existentially. I will say that, when i can actually get my computer to work, i've been playing Warhammer Online, which i'm really digging. That might have something to do with playing a Witch Hunter, which is basically a total badass made of equal parts Solomon Kane, Matthew Hopkins and Django. So, you can understand how that makes me feel.

    TROLL FOR RENT

The job-search went well today. I decided to just copy-paste every advert that caught my eye into Word, then tomorrow I’ll apply for each job in turn. It was a useful tactic as I managed to get through loads of jobs and ended up copy-pasting about twenty-five of them. There’s some weird and wonderful stuff out there, such as £12.00 an hour just to do some Order-Picking. Sod the office, that’ll do me.

    LISTEN-O-TRON

The Legendary Pink Dots – Any Day Now: The beginning of the first song reminds me of ‘Prisoners Of The Damned’ by The Plasmatics but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. I’m also wondering whether these guys influenced Skinny Puppy or the other way around, otherwise it sounds futurist in the way that only music from the 80s does.
I liked it but I’d have to give the record a few more listens to tell you just how much.

Reprazent – New Forms: For some reason, when listening to this I couldn’t stop imagining my Dad dancing to it. I’m not sure this was good job-search music as it made the inside of my skull itch, though it also made me type really fast which I don’t suppose is a bad thing. I might return to a few tracks but I found the whole album a bit much to take in one go to be honest although I appreciated the mentalness of ‘Morse Code’.

Anacrusis – Screams and Whispers: Overall I liked the slightly proggy overtones although I’m guessing that this must have made them about as popular as cock-flavoured Doritos in an era which was creaming its jeans over the likes of Pantera and Sepultura. I think this is definitely worth another listen.

Dan Swano – Moontower: Not many people can do death vocals while remaining coherent but this guy does a good job. Progressive Death is a much maligned genre and I have to say that I could have done without the keyboards on some of the tracks here but having said that, I enjoyed this a lot and Swano is clearly a real talent.

…and I’ll listen to the rest of the stuff that was recommended to me tomorrow.

Do you...have experience in recruitment, sales or employment sectors; have a knowledge of the local labour market; like targets and enjoy challenges? This role is for maternity cover and is therefore temporary.

I dunno what it is, the curious use of elipsis, random use of the semi-colon, scattershot grammar or simply the line “Provide and co-ordinate delivery provision and projects.”
Either way, it’s a work of evil genius.

This reminds of a Silver Surfer comic I once read where the Surfer is trapped in an alien city and has lost his power cosmic. Almost everyone on the planet lives in poverty and those in charge rule with an iron fist. The Surfer is told that if he has a grievance he will need to address it to the great ‘I’. To cut a long story short, the Surfer breaks into the palace of ‘I’ in order to appeal to it directly. It turns out however that ‘I’ (who is in face a giant eye) is deaf, dumb and blind and hasn’t even so much as moved since building the planet-spanning city.
There is some merit in this idea though. If I started a company, I’d put C’thulu in charge.

I’m prepared to overlook that shortcoming as the only proclamation she’s made so far is that she likes biscuits and rice. Just for balance, let me share my own harrowing story about my experiences with this dangerous drug. Once I took an E…and had a pretty good time. It was a cheap night because I didn’t feel the need to eat or drink alcohol and most of the time I felt happy, relaxed and chatty and so did the people I was with because they were also under the influence. When the drug wore off after about six hours I began to feel a bit down so I went to bed and when I woke up I felt okay again.
This is why I believe that this drug should be banned and that anyone caught in possession of even one pill should be fired out of a cannon into the centre of the sun. And I’ll light the fuse!

I don’t buy this. I don’t buy that people are thinking “The company I work for is doing really badly so I’ll take even more time off” because surely that would be counter-productive. Neither do I buy the idea suggested by the Daily Mail, that people are eating cheap food which is in turn leaving them malnourished. All those kids in the third world seem to be able to drag their rickets and scurvy-ridden carcasses into the sweat-shop every day, so there’s no reason why you should have a day off just because you’re buying Tesco ‘Value’ Peas these days.
The real reason people are calling in sick is because they’re sick of their colleagues talking about the fucking credit crunch and if they have to sit and watch your miserable fucking face spout more miserable, misinformed shit about the state of the world’s miserable bastard economy, they’re going to kill you and desecrate your worthless fucking remains. It’s just a theory.

The only reason I include this is because it’s clear that the Mail still have no fucking clue what ‘Political Correctness’ means.

    Jade Goody still alive: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1064850/Cancer-victim-Jade-Goody-manages-brave-smile-takes-sons-school.html
It’s nice that the media has decided to unanimously support the universally hated racist pig Jade. The editors of the red-tops are no doubt already preparing their “Kick this vile woman out of Britain” headlines for print after she recovers.

Some are whites are whiter than others: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1064526/Flight-white-Britons-UK-leaps-70-000-year---population-rising-Eastern-Europeans-come-Britain.html
The world’s 3rd worst newspaper finally puts it’s money where it’s mouth is and makes a distinction between ‘White’ and ‘Other White’ and implies that an influx of immigrants is literally driving (true, proud Aryan) Whites out of the country. Strange that people didn’t take flight when there was the very real danger that the dreaded Hun could have invaded the UK, but they’re leaving now rather than face the grim possibility that their 2nd downstairs toilet might be installed by a Polish plumber.
As for the vast majority of the people who’ve commented on this story, I’d like to fist every single one of them using Voltaire’s Angry Glove.

so the more i think about it, the more i'm pretty sure i'm going to use the momentum from this years upcoming nanowrimo to, well, cheat. i think i'm going to take the first draft of wil o' wisps & give it a glossing over, write another 50,000 words for it, bang it into better shape. i have never really edited something (sorry, all academic papers ever!), so even though i guess january is supposed to be nanoedmo, i'm going to, like i said, turn against the true spirit of the project in favor of a better solution. i am sort of tempted to "teen" it up? i don't know. i think enough time has passed though. i'm excited about it, & talking about it here makes it more likely that i will do it & not self-sabotage. i have also been thinking of just setting a generic goal of writing a page of something, not just livejournal, but not just book, a day. i don't know how much day-to-day success it will garner, but as a theoretical goal it ain't too shabby. in other news, the most interesting thing i've heard about this economic situation was in a comment by carolina haze in a recent post by blognigger. to quote verbatim: Years ago, when GZA said "diversify yo bonds, nigga" did anyone listen? Nope, and now look at us.

Okay, tomorrow I will most likely be spending around five hours on the computer, searching for gainful employment. This will be a boring, soul-destroying exercise from which I may never return. Therefore I'm making a plea. The plea is this plea:

Recommend some music to me to make the experience less monotonous. Either a song or an album, it don't matter. If I have it, I'll listen to it and if I don't have it I'll download it and listen to it. All submissions up until 13:00 GMT tomorrow will be accepted.

    Get to it!

there are dark, shaggy elephants inside of me. slow moving in the ice age of this headache worn on my crooked brow. i blame the cheap vodka; can you imagine that? blame the vodka. jenny was a fuzzy muddle this morning as well; both of us the inhabitants of a dull fog, enemies of an old god. i thought that maybe a bagel would pull me up out of the broken, bobbing wood of this shipwreck, but so far no luck. & today is some holiday of the covenant-- rosh hashana-- & so at least i'll have time to pull my hal nine thousand voice up out of the grave. tell me the secrets of the underworld you beautiful robot. speaking of beautiful robotos...
