Earthquake! (sorta)
I initially felt my bed moving - yes I'm in bed [online] at 9 am on Sunday, shoot me - and thought that I was triggering the movement by tapping my foot unconsciously. I tried tapping my foot again, and the bed kept up a steady vibrato. It lasted for about a minute, several waves of tremors, at least three that I consciously felt.

It didn't occur to me at the time that it was odd the wind chimes in my room were ringing despite the lack of breeze due to closed windows. I honestly thought that I was making my bed do the shakes by tapping my foot - madness. Ever seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks?

"The earthquake measured 8.1 8.5 (as reported on AP) on the Richter Scale. Its epicentre was located off the coast of western Sumatra at latitude 3.4 north and 9.5 east.

Indonesia, a country of 17,000 islands, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the margins of tectonic plates that make up the so-called the "Ring of Fire'' around the Pacific Ocean basin."
~Earthquake hits Indonesia, tremors in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok

On BBC - Tidal waves and tremors hit Asia

So yeah, the earth moved for me today - in more ways than one.

EDIT: It's raining crazy heavy here - six hours after the tremors. Heavy overcast sky; Thor playing with fire again. I don't know if it's a result of the consequential tsunami, because tropical rainstorms are relatively common round these parts.

What were the other ways?

I remember the earthquake in Oregon a few years ago. I thought my father was really angry and shaking the upstairs table. And then the wall. And then the house. And then, as I watched the light fixture above me shake and the wall crack, I realized it might be time to get off the phone and find a new place to be, since "under a light fixture" seemed suddenly a poor choice.

Heck of a way to end a conversation, that was....

Yeah, my first earthquake, I thought someone was shaking a table as well. Until the window of the internet cafe I was in suddenly cracked and people started to scream.

The second one was even stranger. It lasted only 10 seconds or so, but nothing seemed to really happen. Then the next day as I was calmly sitting in the kitchen of my "home" (I was living with the Auxilary Board Member for southern Ecuador while on my year of service there) when the entire western wall of the little home behind their house (in which lived a couple, and the man was 98 years old) suddenly gave way. No one was hurt amazingly. But it was rather frustrating for the family. They were ok in the end at least.

I just read about this earthquake just now. Glad to know you're okay. Those in Indonesia and Asia will be in my prayers.

Isn't it a terrible feeling when you actually feel the earth move? I'm so glad i'm not in California!!!!

Yipes. I did think of you when I saw the news this morning. Sky News were reporting it hit 8.9 on the Richter scale, and that it was the biggest one since 1900 anywhere in the world.

and worse.. :-\
And most of the death toll were due to the tsunami(s) - i just can't help but imagine if the epicenter had been smack in the middle of a chunk of land.. just trying not to read the news anymore, just keeps getting worse.

I know what you mean, i'm a news junkie but most of the pages i look at have the "latest" death count so it's pretty grim reading.

Prema, I'm so relieved to hear you're okay. I heard about the earthquake and, worse yet, the tsunamis about 20 minutes ago and my first thoughts were of your safety. Thank God that you are all right.

I just got online to read/watch the news, and my heart sank to find out about this amazing quake and the tsunami resulting. The latest I read was the "world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years" of 8.9... but 8.5 versus 8.9... Either way, it's such a powerful monster. :-(

I really am glad you're alright. Take care!!!

It's the end of FY04, and God is balancing accounts, that's all. While the those appalled by the death toll and those personally affected will not think so, these sort of things happen.

I just couldn't place those names for a moment :)
Thanks so much for the thoughts - yup, I'm safe - ensconced in the mainland.
Apparently there've been aftershocks in places like the Andaman Islands, but nothing that I've felt myself.

Came here through Tv Smith's blog.
I still can't believe something like this has just happened. Still shaken and speechless. When I first heard it hit Penang and Kedah, I thought just minor tremors. Never thought it would be so big. 22,000 lives and still rising. My heart goes out to them. May they rest in peace
