Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last Monday I gave change to a homeless guy (19 points). Last Saturday I helped [info]termaits see the light (8 points). Last Thursday I didn't flush (-1 points). Last Tuesday I helped [info]extant_child hide a body (-173 points). In March I gave [info]biboy_x_i a kidney (1000 points).

Overall, I've been nice (853 points). For Christmas I deserve a shiny red ball!

Strength is an art [Nov. 14th, 2006|02:41 pm]
[The Angel's Aura | contemplative]

And life goes on. . . . . .and this isn't a way of escaping from unresolved problems. It's a way of gaining back strength, it's a way of responding to that wake-up call that there are other aspects of my life that I can still control and can still bring cheers to my soul. A cheerful disposition amidst great emotional struggles isn't pretention, it's unraveling the strength that one possesses. Holding on to happy moments isn't pushing the truth away, it is a way of coping with truth that at times, is almost too painful to bear. It's sad when people assume that "facing problems" already equates to dealing with them constantly. Problems weren't really meant to be dealt with all the time, especially when it is almost impossible to change the course of things. During such times, the response should translate to acceptance - an acceptance of these problems as a form of painful reality. This acceptance is an acknowledgement that the fairy-tale-like life is over, that the bunso-bearing-nothing-heavy stage is over, that it's time for the bunso to go through all of this seemingly alone. There are a lot of things that you cannot simply mend completely. During such instances, it is important to be satisfied with even the mere band-aid solutions. No matter how small such solutions may seem, they provide relief and uplift the spirit. That is, if you consider them solutions to begin with.
They say that we should not ask for the load to be lightened, but we should strive to be stronger. But, how much do you have to carry to prove that you are strong, anyway? I guess "how much you carry" is always a choice. It's about being able to draw the line between things you simply push to the chamber of painful acceptance or things you choose to respond to. And when it comes to the emotions, urgency doesn't have to be a value especially when it's difficult to give forgiveness when remorse was seemingly insufficient or when it is difficult to express empathy or understanding. It is difficult to reverse the course when things or people fall apart, but falling apart yourself is always a choice. Strength is an art. It can come in the remarkable fusion of the ability to accept difficult realities and the ability to illuminate the other, more beautiful aspects of life. It is not viewing such other aspects as escape routes, but opportunities to be grateful and to rekindle happiness.
As my friend told me in the text message that I saw first thing this morning: Life is tough, but you can be tougher. Thanks Portia, that really made my day. =)

The Mark of Sembreak. . . [Nov. 3rd, 2006|02:00 pm]
[The Angel's Aura | blah]

Thank God for diversions and opportunities to unwind to help me regain strength (and positive outlook, too) to face hard times. Thank God for things getting a little bit better. Thank God for the spirit to endure, for the unfading ability to appreciate even the seemingly small but significant marks of happiness. I've always loved our Forensics prayer- it works beyond school- it definitely applies in life. - Lord, help me to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

One of the most fun diversions: After getting classcards,(at least sa subjects na on time magsubmit ng classcards ang prof), I met up with a few of my Bio blockmates for lunch and movie trip! Grabe, na-miss ko na mag-lunch sa Vinzons. Devoured the slice of ube cake that I truly miss.! (Btw, naubos ko na kanina ang ube jam na binili from Baguio, hehehe). After lunch, we went to SM North for movie trip! We were supposed to watch The Banquet but because of schedule conflicts, we decided to watch The Grudge 2 instead. (Btw, ang remaining choices namin ay Till I Met You, Boa, hehehe. . so The Grudge na lang, bwahahaa!) So how was it? Hmm. . . .
1). Watching it wasn't a waste of time, infernez.  It was a  nice  way  to  unwind, to release stress, etc. .  BUT. . . Ito ang movie na dapat mong panoorin kung naghahanap ka ng movie na ang purpose lang ay GULATIN KA O PASIGAWIN KA.
2). The movie had a lot of "Scream, Scream" moments.
3). On constructive comments: I can see the attempt to be creative in the storyline but they weren't able to FULLY pull it off. The intertwining nature of the "stories" wasn't revealed with the remarkable clarity needed to reinforce the "horror-ness." The cliche-ish elements were glaring. . .i.e. the "murderous" nature of the hair, family conflicts as the root of it all, the similiraties of The Grudge and The Ring characters, etc. Check out [info]kanzenrei for more analysis on these cliche-ish elements. hehehee
4). I so agree with Pam!! What makes a horror movie a horror movie? Kapag ginagawang tanga ang mga characters! Siyempre nga naman. Boring na kasi kapag hindi sila nagiging biktima ng sarili nilang kagagawan. . hehehe
5). It was a fun movie pa rin! So, if you're so bored this sembreak and you're looking for something to do (and you're not looking for a productive task), go watch The Grudge 2!! Masaya siya promise! Tawa lang kami ng tawa nina Pam and Ned after. P.S. Mixie, Berna, Jessa. . .we missed you! Wah!

All mixed-up [Nov. 1st, 2006|07:31 am]
[The Angel's Aura | calm]

At times, it is so tempting to believe that patience is a form of suffering disguised as a virtue. But perhaps, it isn't suffering after all. It must be strength, captured by the will to endure suffering with the remarkable faith that everything will soon be resolved. It must be the will to keep that "optimistic view" despite others' claims that it is almost crazy to do so. Strength can also come with the acceptance of circumstances beyond our control. It can mean residing to mere contemplation, or just striving to move on.

Sent by a friend. .  . .Makes me see that strength can also mean being able to stop and smell the seemingly hidden roses. . .

Sent by my cousin. . . for those who want to rekindle nerdom amidst the sembreak: http://thenonist.com/index.php/thenonist/permalink/hot_library_smut/

P.S. Some more marks of happy, happy moments that I wish to share. May the camera-shy-conscious-OC people also find happiness. . .hehehe, ahem, ahem. . . joke lang! Enjoy!!!

Keepsakes. . . [Oct. 31st, 2006|10:39 am]
[The Angel's Aura | indescribable]

Adieu, 1st Sem! NDC gave me the best finale to my first ever sem in college. I'm just so thankful to be able to debate and have fun in Baguio. Yes, NDC (the experience itself and the memories of NDC) helped me pull through (and it keeps helping me pull through). Happy memories serve as an alert bell inside of me......to constantly remind me that despite the series of unfortunate events that preceded and succeeded NDC, I can always hold on to doing the thing I love and sharing this remarkable experiece with some old, and at the same time, newfound friends.

NDC was definitely an inspiring tournament. Super congratulations to Nicolo and Claudia (two of my debate idols!) for being the ultimate champions of NDC!  A million hugs and congratulations too to the other teams! Kudos to my teammate Alvin- you were a great teammate. =)

Even if we were "victims" of the break cap, I'm very happy with what we have achieved. =) It was such a great 1st college tournament for me.

Debate-wise, I learned so much. . .how there's a big difference between having a brilliant idea and executing it brilliantly, how prep time is most efficiently spent, how to reconcile your school of thought with that of the adj, how to adapt to surprising set-ups. . .

Character-wise, I learned so much.. . . there's too much to mention! But the greatest thing that NDC taught me is holding on and moving on.

FUN!!!! Yes, every moment in Baguio = HAPPINESS!!!! I miss Baguio already! I'm not really homesick. . I'm now Baguio-sick, hehehe. . .It's as if I want to capture every moment in Baguio. . .in Baguio, it's as if everything was just okay. . . .

Edit: A pic replaced/more pics added to make some "pic-OC" people happy. . . hehehe. . .to save myself from pang-aasar attacks, too. . hehehe. . .ahem, ahem

Haay, titigil na nga ako sa pag-dadrama. . I'll listen to Ja. I know I can get through this time.. . .Faith and strength, faith and strength, faith and strength. . .

Unang Linggong Pagtuklas [Jun. 18th, 2006|11:21 am]
[The Angel's Aura | indescribable]
[The Angel's Melody |"One Love" Mary J. Blige & U2]

Phew! Just got through my first week as a college student. . .I discovered/Irealized/I am now aware that. . .

* I think I have a first day as freshie curse. Just a very short anecdote. .  .When I was in first year high school, my rubber shoes got destroyed on the first week of classes. The soles seem to come off, debris were scattered on the floor as I walked. And this time. . .last June 13, on the first day of classes, the strap of my sandal snapped. But I was still lucky and unlucky at the same time! While waiting for my orientation which was scheduled after lunch, I decided to go to Miriam to drop off my request for official transcript of records. The sandal strap snapped while I was getting change from the bookstore in Miriam. Thank God the bookstore had mightybond! And thank God the strap snapped while I was at the bookstore. Imagine, if it happened otherwise, I would be walking in UP Diliman barefoot.  I spent about a third of my allowance for the mightybond and stayed in the bookstore for 45 minutes while waiting for the mightybond to (hopefully) take efect. I helped the bookstore staff fold and fix some manila papers while waiting. Then I left. Thank God the strap did not snap again. Freshie = footware failure experience.
* Orientations, Welcome Assemblies in UP are really very long. Get ready for 5 hour-no-intermission programs.
* Hindi ka ka magsasawa ever sa pagkain doon. Lahat yata ng sulok may kainan. Good-bye na to my high school days when I used to eat the same food everyday.
* Speaking of food, I should be careful about weight gain. Schedule ko kasi, subject, break, subject, break, subject, break. My only short break is the one between Math 17 and Geology 11- 15 minutes. The rest are at least 1 hour and 30 minute breaks. I try not to spend all of my breaktimes eating. hehehe =)
* All of my classes are relatively fine. I love English 11. My Math 17 teacher is good and very considerate, parang high school pa nga ang approach niya sa teaching. I haven't met my Geology 11 professor- she's on a cruise daw. Philosophy 1- very interesting kaya lang the prof seems very strict and has very high expectations. Kasaysayan 2- haay. . .Asian history again, may pagka slave - driver ang prof pero magaling siya at maraming alam. Most of my profs are old na except my Math teacher who looks very young, naka braces pa, mapagkakamalan mo siyang freshie. hehe.. . .Realization? Generally, high school teachers in Miriam seem like angels kapag tinabi mo sa mga UP profs.
* People, people, people. It's an interesting experience to meet so many people- some coming from as far as Butuan or Misamis in Mindanao. I like my blockmates and our block-handler too, they're very friendly and warm. Yesterday, we had our first block activity- Scavenger Hunt sa UP-D. Had fun even if we had to walk under the sun and move from building to building. Dumaan pa nga kami sa talahiban na malapit sa bagong Physics building. Short cut daw, sabi ng guide para manalo kami sa hunt. Had fun, although a little scary because I'm paranoid about snakes.
* If there's something I miss about high school, It is the CLASS setting. Yes, I have blockmates now, but they're my classmates in only one or two subjects. So, it's class = new set of people. another class = new set of people. This new set-up is actually interesting and exciting, but I can't help missing IV-3. The feeling is really different- before, once you enter the classroom, you get to bond with so many special people in your life right away. . . .that's the IV-3 setting that I really miss.
* That's why I'm really super happy when I bump into Miriam friends in UP. Ang saya talaga. . .makes you feel at home in your "new home."
* I was very happy to end my week with a IV-3  class dinner at Kenny Rogers. Super sayang lang hindi kami kumpleto. But I was very thankful to see so many people that I super miss again!

Oh summery, summery memories. . . [May. 17th, 2006|03:32 pm]
[The Angel's Aura | calm]
[The Angel's Melody |"High" Barbie version]

You’ll definitely know that summer’s almost ending when it’s time for the never-ending and often, dreaded good-byes. Now, I’m back to the “the-only-young?-or-teen-person-in-the-house” mode. My cousin Micki went back to Ozamiz already. Too bad she wasn’t able to go with us to Cebu. We stayed there for 5 days but when we came back to Manila, it was time for her to leave. :c It’s weird that no matter how our relatives can drive us insane sometimes, we still long for and cherish their company. It was a crazy summer. . .Micki stayed at our house for more than a month!!

Going Insane Moments. . . .Imagine living with a 12-year old who is a super insomniac!! Yes, super insomniac. Well, I have to admit I’m an insomniac too, but I’m not a super insomniac. SUPER INSOMNIAC = sleeps at almost 4 am every night. (I can sleep as late as past 2 am sometimes, but not 4 am every night!) And she wakes up at around 9 am (that’s pretty early if you sleep at 4 am). So, it’s Anna = going insane! Especially, since I’m a “light sleeper.” i.e. I’m very sensitive to sounds (lights, too). Even if my parents told me to just sleep before she does, I just can’t fully sleep. I keep waking up in between naps when I hear her turning the pages of a book, playing with my bead box, walking around the room, checking out my bookshelf. I couldn’t sleep completely when the lights were still on. Yes, I’m that sensitive!

But despite my “sleeping pattern upheaval,” I super miss my cousin.

summery randomness. . . . [Apr. 12th, 2006|03:45 am]
[The Angel's Aura | indescribable]
[The Angel's Melody |"High" The Speaks and Barbie version]

A String of Random Summery Memoirs:

* Summer is always an “Ate” time for me. Now, my cousins from Ozamiz are in Manila and they’re staying over at my Lola’s house and our house, too. (hahaha, technically yes). Today, the oldest of the cousins went back to Ozamiz with their mom, leaving the youngest cousin here in Manila. And, she’s staying at our house over the summer, she’ll sleep in my room. I can sense insomniac times ahead. My cousin is a total insomniac. . .the last time she slept over at my house. . .she slept at 4 am!! Hahaha, I have to make a little adjustment over the summer. . .like having a companion in the room and sleeping with the lights on (two things I’m not really used to).

* “Ate” duties I was able to fulfill (for the past week):

- budget the money my tita gave for our “gimik”

- make sure cousins didn’t get lost in the mall

- watch over cousins in the moviehouse

- accompany cousins in their shopping (the most stressful part. . .making way through crowds, checking out their budget, going around and around. . . .). But still, I’m glad we went shopping here in Manila. My summer experiences made me appreciate the “Philippine shopping culture”, hahahah. At least, it's just the "look around-examine product-contemplate-decide-pay" approach. If ever you get stressed because of shopping, at least, it’s tolerable. . .almost a “good kind of stress”, hehehe.

* “Ate” duty failure: My cousins and I wanted to watch “Just Friends” The girl at the ticket booth asked me, “May kasama ka ba na below 13?” I told her, “Wala po.” But, our cousin below 13 was with us! After the movie, my young cousin told me, “Ate ang green ng movie!” Oh-no-whoa. . . . .

* But in fairness, I like the movie “Just Friends.” Although there were really some green parts, the love story is cute as a whole. =)

* Summer is also a great time to recall games that take a child’s breath away.  =) heheh

Escapade Memoirs [Apr. 4th, 2006|01:50 pm]
[The Angel's Aura | cheerful]

Finally, home sweet home. =) Just arrived from China, had one full day of rest upon arriving in Manila.

We spent 6 days in China – Day 1-3 (Mar 28-30) in Beijing, Day 4-6 (Mar 31-Apr 2) in Shanghai. The trip was actually my parents’ graduation gift to me, hehe. =) Dad told me last year, “When you graduate, I want you to see the land of your ancestors.”

I agree with the tour guides that the timing of our trip – last week of March – was perfect. It’s springtime in China – so the weather is cool but not “killing cold” and it’s not yet the peak season so the prices are not yet very high and there aren’t so many tourists yet. On the weather: Yes, the weather is cool, but it is “killing cold” in Beijing!! My Ninang went to Beijing a week before we did and she told us that it was so cold in Beijing, your skin will get very dry and your hands will get cuts because of the cold. Before we left, I told my parents my Ninang was OA. But, I swallowed my words. It was indeed very cold in Beijing – the minute I stepped out of the plane, I felt as if someone pushed me into a very, very cold freezer. Yes, I wore thick clothes and a very, very thick jacket, but they didn’t seem to work. When we went to the Forbidden City, I realized Ninang was right. My hands were very dry and I had about 3 cuts. But, in Shanghai, the weather was cool and beautiful (yes, tour guide was right) – just like Baguio. The weather was already warming up.

A rundown of our escapade:

Day 1 – Arrived in Beijing noontime, after a delicious lunch, we went to the Forbidden City and Tian’anmen Square. We had dinner at the original Quanjude Restaurant (I can’t get enough of the peking duck). After dinner, we watched a very impressive Kung-fu (or Acrobatic Show).

Day 2- We went to the Jade Museum, then we toured the Great Wall. After lunch, we went to the Silk Street/Yasiu Bargain Market Shopping. We had buffet for dinner.

Day 3 – We went to the Beijing Zoo Giant Panda Center and the Summer Palace. New Bargain Market in the afternoon. Had a Royal Banquet Style Dinner.

Day 4- We went to Shanghai. Had KFC for lunch (hehehe), then we went to Shanghai Ocean Aquarium (yes, I agree with the tour guide- this Ocean Aquarium is better than the one in Singapore). After, we went to my favorite- the Pearl of the Oriental TV Tower. I love the bird’s eye view of the city. Then, we crossed the Huangpu River through the Sightseeing Tunnel/The Bund. After dinner, I had the most wonderful time in the Cruise Tour around the Huangpu River. Shanghai is so beautiful at night!!!

Day 5 – We went to the Silk Museum, then to the Yu Yuan Bazaar. (I love the architecture – ancient China style). Buffet lunch at the Brazilian Barbeque Restaurant. After lunch, shopping at Nanjing Pedestrian Street. Dinner then we watched another impressive Acrobatic Show.

Day 6- Shopping in the morning. After lunch, we rode the Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) Train to the airport. It’s the fastest train in the world, the train is raised 6 inches above the rail. It took us 7 minutes to travel 30 km. Its speed is more than 400 km/hr.

We went with a tour group, so we were also able to “bond” with other people and the tour guide/s. Jason, our tour guide in Beijing, shared a lot of interesting stuff. He’s pretty brilliant. Judy, our tour guide in Shanghai, is an interesting character, ehehhe. =) More kuwento soon – a lot of unforgettable moments- getting lost in the Forbidden City, climbing the Great Wall, getting “stressed” in bargain shopping, etc. . .hehehe

Memoir-Worthy "Finales" [Mar. 27th, 2006|01:00 am]
[The Angel's Aura | cheerful]
[The Angel's Melody |"Don't Forget About Us" Mariah Carey]

FINALLY. . .OUR COMPUTER IS BACK!!!!

I’m now officially a non-high school student. And now, I’m having an LJ Build-up. So many “memoir-worthy” events before, during and after graduation unleashes the LJ traffic.

It’s the usual ceremonial stuff. Before graduation, we had the Honor’s Assembly and Recognition Day and the Baccalaureate Mass and Appreciation Ceremony.  I’m super thankful to get the First Honor’s card on the last quarter of high school , an Academic Excellence Award (for getting 90 + averages since 1st year), and some club awards (hahaha, including a loyalty award). The Baccalaureate Mass and Appreciation Ceremony was very touching- especially the singing of “For Good.” Even if I didn’t want to have a senti moment yet, I just can’t help having one with my parents, teachers and dearest friends surrounding me during the singing part.

Pre-Grad Agenda: I didn’t fully follow Ms. Boots’ advice to get “beauty rest” during the 2-day break period before grad. But, I did some “worthwhile”, “high-school finale worthy” activities. The last, officially part of the schoolyear activity of the Forensics Guild. . .the Club Social Action Activity at Brookside. Even if we went through a lot of obstacles (transpo problems, venue problems, etc). . .at least, we were able to conquer all of them. We had a meaningful and fun interaction with the kids. . .amused talaga ako sa nangyari sa puppet show. It affirmed my belief that when you have a worthwhile pursuit, even the intense difficulties cannot stop the plan from materializing. Last on the Pre-Grad Agenda: JASMINE’S 18th BIRTHDAY CELEB!!!! We had so much fun at her house on the eve of our grad and I’m so thankful she loved the “surprise program” that we prepared. We had modified 18 candles, modified 18 roses, Yes-No Game about Jasmine’s life, and Jasmine-only-participant-in-game thingie. Hehehe. . .

Jasmine's Debut: Pre-Grad Celeb, PJAM Reunion in One

Grad itself: One thing I’m sure of: The feeling of getting a high school diploma is much, much happier than getting a grade school diploma. I was touched by the speech of the keynote speaker, Ms. Magsanoc-Alikpala.. . . I could truly relate to some of her struggles. The cheerful grad song “Masayang Pamamaalam” neutralized the senti tendencies. I think it was better that way. We were able to hold on to the “victorious” moment of getting the diploma. At least I didn’t cry when I said good-bye to classmates and some teachers. After grad, we ate dinner at Katre’s. I saw two batchmates there. . .Steph Hirang and Anna Villareal.

Post-Grad: Swimming at Marian’s village a day after grad. . .PJAM POST-GRAD CELEBRATION! Wah. . it was so last-minute. . .we planned it on the day itself! Buti na lang pinayagan ako but my parents were not that happy about me going home at 12:15 am. (Thanks to Precious sa paghatid sa akin). . I love PJAM bonding moments! Last Post-Grad: GRADUATION BALL!!  I had fun as a stag. .. . eating good food, watching our long class video (hehehe), solo pictaking, and of course dancing, the most fun part. . . It’s my first time to remove my “instruments-of-torture” high heels on the dance floor. Hahaha, how symbolic of my liberation. . . .

And “memoir-worthy” post-grad experiences keep flowing. . . .
