09:49 pm - Spoiler-immune!
*whew*

I am finally caught up on TV. BSG Season 4.0, plus all the episodes (Heroes, House, How I Met Your Mother - why do all the good shows start with H?) this week that I missed. I can now discuss all of these shows, impervious to spoilers! (Other than spoilers for things that haven't aired. Doh.)

Just a couple years ago, I watched basically no TV. Now that I have a handful of shows, it's a lot of work to keep up with them! How do people watch more than a few???

11:04 pm - Audience participation time
In honor of the fall TV season starting, I thought I'd try out this meme that [info]thedan used forever ago.

I'll list my ten favorite TV shows, and you guess who my favorite character is from each of them. I'll cross them off as they're guessed.

Unfortunately, I don't really have ten favorite fiction shows. Not sure American Idol or Emergency Vets would work. So it's my top 8. 7 apparently. I thought I had 8 at some point. Oh well.

To make up for it, guess who I ship on the two starred shows (remember that I've only seen 3 seasons of BSG, although that will change very soon).

*1. Battlestar Galactica (the new one, this was a HARD one, the whole ensemble is awesome)
2. Star Trek: The Next Generation (two-way tie) - one down
3. Scrubs - [info]thedan got it with Dr Cox
4. Heroes - [info]thist got Noah Bennett/HRG
5. The Simpsons
*6. How I Met Your Mother - [info]thedan got Barney but not my ship.
7. House - [info]justsomesleddog got House himself.

I HAVE A HUGE PAPER DUE TOMORROW AND ALL I CAN DO IS STRESS ABOUT WHAT TO HAVE FOR DINNER!

I swear, I have selective ADD. It only shows up when I need to focus on something important.

Of course, my advisor still hasn't gotten back comments to me on the second half of the paper. So maybe my brain is just convinced that it doesn't matter if I revise the first half right now, since I can't do the whole thing.

Also, I was not able to find the one thing I really wanted for my bday. A rubber broom a la OneSweep, etc.

Not at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, or CVS (where I definitely HAVE seen them before). There was a cheap knockoff at Petsmart, but it didn't look like it had as many bristles as others I've seen, and it cost more.

Anyone know anyplace still selling these? Worst case, I can get it off Amazon, but shopping in person is just so much more satisfying. And I'd kinda like to sweep with it today if possible.

I had a shoparrific birthday. I got a Wilton icing tips set from Michael's (I was too tired last night to bake, so I'll be trying them out when I make my cake today), and a kitchen scale and a digital candy thermometer from Target.

I also got Short Circuit on DVD at Target for $5. Whenever I look at cheap DVDs these days, I'm always thinking "What movies do I want to have for my kids to watch?" Is that weird, seeing as how I don't even have kids yet? But it won't be more than a couple more years, and boy do I ever remember how much time I spent watching videos (over and over again) as a child. So I want to start now so I don't find myself scrambling to find every childhood movie I loved later. I've thought of doing the same thing with children's books, but our bookshelves are overly full as it is and at least DVDs we might watch ourselves now.

Which made me think of something else. How many modern kids spend most of their time watching the same things their parents watched growing up? That becomes more and more likely as things like Sesame Street Old School, Electric Company, etc make it to DVD (WHERE IS MY SQUARE ONE?). I mean, I certainly plan to check out whatever PBS's current offerings are when we get there, but no way are they watching Elmo's World over Real Sesame Street. Given the recent repopularity of My Little Ponies, Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Transformers, and every other 80s toy, I wonder if children's pop culture has now started an infinite 20-year loop that is destined to be repeated for as long as technology will allow.

Given that the 20-year-loop starts with my childhood, that would be AWESOME!

They seriously need to make Bela Karolyi the main commentator for gymnastics. And have the BELA CAM constantly in the corner of the screen. He was already way way awesomer than anyone else they've got, even before he started openly bitching about the 14-year-old, 70-pound elephant in the room.

04:31 pm - Canidae
Quick question mid-vacation:

Does anyone else feed their dogs Canidae Lamb & Rice? And if so, has the recent formula change given you any problems?

My sister is watching the bassets while I'm in Virginia. I bought a 40-lb bag for their stay and for her to keep after, since her lab mix Crayon eats the same food. I noticed that the kibbles were lighter and a slightly different shape the first time I fed it to them. Then their poop turned really nasty, and as soon as Crayon started eating it his poop went gross too. BIG PROBLEM!

She's going to return it for a bag of Chicken & Rice, and if that doesn't work I guess I'll need to find a new dog food brand. This sucks!

BILLY BOB!!!

No, wait. This one is so good I've gotta embed it.

These are amazing.

I wonder where you get an old Showbiz stage, anyhow.

BILLY BOB >>>> CHUCK E CHEESE

By the way, here's a great place to read about the history of Showbiz/CEC that I found a couple years ago.

On the plus side, I'm happy that we're being rewarded for surviving the LONGEST WINTER EVER with a nice mild summer. I've actually worn my jacket this week.

On the other hand, I do wish it would stop waiting JUST until I decide to take the dogs down to the park to run in the tennis courts before it starts raining. C'mon, sky, Valentine could use some exercise. :(

Man, is it WWDC time already? The rumors, they are a-flyin'! I'm not getting my hopes up, though, I bet they're just going to show a 3G iPhone. Whoopee, I don't even know what 3G means. :^P

Fred would like you to know that it is TEN MINUTES TO DINNERTIME. And this is UNACCEPTABLE. What good am I as a human if I can't warp the space-time continuum so that it is always and eternally 7:00PM?

12:56 pm - GAAAAHHHH OMG I'VE DESTROYED MY EMAIL!!!
Huge, panicky story about how I completely fuxx0red my email put behind cut. )

Ok, so my officemate has had this happen before and he said that it takes a really long time but eventually all the email will get moved back to the inbox. So when I got home I started it moving again and let it sit, and it did all copy back. Still with 2-4 copies of everything going back to January, but only one copy of anything older than that.

When new email came in it was still mixing it up and showing me a really old email instead, but having in rebuild the box fixed that.

I've deleted a lot of the extra copies, but I still have about 400 to go.

It is rather silly how excited I am that the next American Idol is totally going to be from Kansas City.

REPRESENT!

The dogs love their kongs more than they love me.

This morning, I left an hour or so later than usual. They were practically shoving me out the door so they could have their kongs.

At least I don't feel bad when I crate them. They'd much rather be in the crate with the kong than out of the crate without it, I think.

10:39 am - Interesting read
Neal Stephenson has a new book coming out, and in the slashdot discussion on it someone linked to an interview he did back in 2004. I thought the answer to #2 was really interesting, and #4 is lovely as well.

03:46 pm - Yay, Apple listens!
The update to 10.5.2 was released today, and apparently includes a list view for Stacks on the dock. You may remember me bitching about this earlier. Google searches for relevant keywords showed that this was a pretty common complaint, and I guess Apple actually listened - they also added an option to turn off transparency in the menu bar, probably the other most-complained-about "feature" of Leopard.

This makes me happy, since I figured Apple would be all "We know design better than you, shut your mouth and buy our stuff" like they sometimes get. And yes, most of the time they DO know design better than their customers. But sometimes you gotta take differences personal preferences into account.

Also, it looks like there are a whole lotta bug fixes, signaling that for those who don't like to buy the first iteration of something, this could be the time to finally go for it. Personally, I might actually ask our dept tech guys to upgrade my laptop.
