Test Cricket - what an extraordinary game of skill it is.
England, so deserving of a second win, just cant seem to bury us. The fight back at Edgebaston by the Australians was probably one of the greatest cricketing moments I have ever seen, and seeing them still at the crease now, after the follow on was enforced is a healthy sign that at least SOME of our cricketers can take the pressure applied by the England eleven.

Much as I am loathe to say it, this test will probably be over shortly, and our loss, but at least it wont be by an innings.

It really has been the most entertaining of Ashes tours despite the performances at times of our boys. All credit to the Poms.

I must admit that we have been thoroughly outplayed by the Poms. We have definitely been out bowled, though top effort of Lee to step up and take the load of a missing McGrath and a less than stellar performance from Dizzy (the poor bugger - though personally I think he did redeem himself with his batting contributions). I think some of our 'regular' Australian reps (like Punter, Gilly, Hayden - hell most of the starting line up) really need to take a good long look in the mirror. I think that, while some of them are in form slumps that we all know happen from time to time, they have become complacent about their place in the side. Who would dare replace Ricky Ponting for example. Sorry - but if you're not performing you shouldn't make the assumption you'll stay in the side. Some of our batters are really being embarrassed by both their own individual performances and those of the tail enders. I am starting to lose count of the number of times a tail ender has been the top scorer!

In saying this I have to say that I do agree with Pontings comments and now publicly known frustrations with England's use of the substitute fielder. Certainly if you have a player legitimately injured then bring in your sub while they receive attention. But for them to 'cycle' through their specialist fieldsmen like they have for the WHOLE tour really stinks. You shouldn't be able to go "Hey Freddy you've bowled a bunch of overs, go have a rest and come back fresh to take 3 more wickets." It shouldn't be like that.

And a final rant I guess - while its obvious Australia have been outplayed considerably for most of this series, some of the news reports, former cricketting greats comments and just general behaviour of the England supporters really leaves a lot to be desired. Australia have had a major dominance of the game for a long time. It was only a matter of time before that dominance ended - but to carry on with comments about Vaughan's captaincy, in comparison to Ponting as a captain in general and not really specifically in this series only, is over the top. In the second test the crowd's behaviour at the closure of the game was disgusting in my opinion. England by all rights should have won easily - they didn't. They very very nearly lost and managed to scrape victory by 2 runs when a draw would have perhaps been more fitting. Instead of simply celebrating the victory the fans pointed the batsmen to the stands and carried on like they had absolutely flogged us - when in reality they had come extremely close to an embarrassing loss.

Bad form!!

That's my 20 cents worth anyway :)

I have to agree. To almost lose the unlosable test at Edgbaston and then carry on as they did was totally graceless. Not only the supporters but also the players and the press generally.

We arent playing well, there are no excuses but England have no idea how to win a match with any decency and proved it yet again last night by losing 7 wickets in a match they could easily have won by an innings.

As for Katich and his fine, I feel he was quite hard done by, considering he accepted the decision, left the ground and only showed his annoyance on the way back to the pavillon by muttering (unless I missed something?)

Bad decisions happen at all levels of cricket, and players from all sides just have to accept the umpires decisions with as much good grace as is possible.

The substitute fielder debacle is just not cricket.

Its been such a long time since these bastards won a game they invented they just havent a clue sometimes.

Ahhh I think I have met my cricketting soul mate *grin*

I totally agree with you on Katich - he walked. He accepted the decision and showed the normal frustration batters show when getting out at crucial point in the game. Ponting as the captain should have exercised some restraint and followed appropriate channels for his complaints but Katich's LBW was dodgy at best. Really Gilly was unlucky to be given on his LBW as well. Yes it may well have taken leg stump but geez you'd want to be absolutely positive and I don't think the umpire could have been.
