Despite a less-than-stellar Saturday (not bad, just not good), Sunday was a peach! Zach and I woke up floppy and happy and sat around for a while, working on the computer and reading, respectively. I headed out at 530 to go to Book Club. Little did I know that gale forces had overtaken the area. AWESOME! I didn't have my camera with me to take daredevil shots of the bridge (more's the pity) but it was magnificent! The wind was blowing like crazy and the water was splashing up across one side of the bridge and coming down FOUR LANES OF TRAFFIC over. WOWZA! I got splashed several times, much to my delight (using windshield wipers when there isn't any rain is totally awesome). Once I'd cleared the splashing zone, my car was being buffeted around so much that I opened both front windows a scootch. This proved to be interesting as the occasional blast of wind would negotiate its way into my car and literally SLAP me upside the head. So. Rad.

Book Club was fun. We read Wicked and Kate themed the meal to the book. Everything was green! We had spinach fettuccine with pesto, french bread with fresh parsley butter, green salad, a sparkling green apple chai drink she whipped up, and mint icecream (with green-iced sugar cookies) for dessert. Ho-larious. And tasty! I will have to make some fancy butters in my Cuisinart now that I know it's possible. Mmmmmm.

Back home I got bitten by the cooking bug. I whipped up a feta cheese spread (feta cheese, cream cheese, fresh basil, onion powder, garlic powder, white pepper) in the Cuisinart. Oh how I love it! I'd been hankering for cookies for quite some time so I nabbed my newest Martha Stewart and used her recipe for basic (Soft'n'Chewy) Chocolate Chip Cookies. Zach was my sous-chef and helped me mix in the ingredients (Ghiradelli milk chocolate chips -- oh my!). I used my Silpat mat for the first time with cookies. We sat in the library and read together while we waited for the first batch to come out of the oven.

O heavenly mother of all that is good and pure! These cookies are the motherfrickin bomb! Zach and I did little delicious cookie dances while I baked. They were awesome! Martha scores big! We munched cookies and played Clue and had a wonderful night together. I neglected to bring any cookies for lunch today (logic: then I won't feel guilty when I eat a bunch tonight) and now I'm totally craving them.

What do you do when you're having a cookie craving! Take a walk! Norah and I walked briskly up and down the street and then came back to bowls of hot vegetable soup she made last night. Super yum! I'm making lasagne tonight so that's going to be my contribution to the lunches at the house. Fun!

All this talk about food has got me started on a new project. I've finally decided that it's necessary for me to start a recipe repository. I will look into getting some kind of filing system at home (all the printouts and handwritten notes just won't cut it anymore) but I'm also working on one for my site. I like the one on Daymented and I'm pulling a little inspiration from there in terms of organization (sadly, no flashy-flashy light-up mouse-overs for me).

In other news, I swear to the Lords that the fax machine just meowed.

I went to a book reading on Sunday (Stephen Zunes "Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and the Roots of Terrorism") at Elliot Bay Book Company and while I was waiting, I wandered around the book store (*drool*) and looked at books that I wanted to buy but couldn't. I settled for writing them down instead, so I can go to the library and get books for free, even if I have to wait weeks for them (somewhat unsatisfying, but financially necessary). One of the books I wrote down was "Wicked" by Gregory Macguire...about the Wicked Witch of the West and so on and so forth. Is that the book you guys read? Is it good? It looks really good, and I'm a big proponent of judging books by their covers, proverbs be damned. It usually works fairly well for me. (I'm kidding, kind of...but it did look really good.)

Yup, that was the book. It's alright. I'd read his second novel and been disappointed. This one's better, but Kate summed it up well: "It was easy to put down." I took a long time getting through it just because there were parts that seemed to take much longer than they should. Also, there's some stylistic stuff that seemed really unnecessary (we talked about this a lot at book club). A fun lark, though. Nab it from the library (there isn't a long wait).

As a person who has worked in bookstores and libraries for years, I almost always judge books by their covers. Heh.

I created a Microsoft Access database for my recipes, which is great for searching, seeing pictures, and creating grocery lists.

However, I find it difficult to actually cook when the recipe is displayed on my laptop. It's hard to scroll with messy hands. But printing it out defeats the purpose.

Please let me know if you find a good solution!

does access have a zoom that you can play with to try and get more of the recipie on screen at once?

Oh neat! That's really incredible, Molly. I'd love to see it before you move away (PS - I have a supar sekret program from my brother for you).

I like Stacy's idea ("One of these days I'm going to get a big binder and those three-ring plastic sheet protectors and print out every recipe I find on the internet, plus some family recipes that I scribbled down when I was a teenager, and load them into a binder with tabs. That way I can write comments on the pages, and also have them taken out of the binder (while I make a recipe) but still protected in that plastic sheet. I'd like a good binder from Paperhaus or something. ONE of these days I will be this organized.") a lot. Recipe cards are just so not me.

1. WICKED - it is in fact that book by Gregory Maguire and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Which Cookies??

Which ones did you make? Soft and chewy? Thin and Crisp? Cakey? I'm heading to the store for ingredients....
And did you use Ghirardelli milk or semi-sweet chips??

Soft'n'Chewy (the unmodified recipe). I used Ghiradelli milk because neither of us like semi-sweet chips. They're GOOD. I didn't add as many as she requested, but they'd be good with that many (we're low-chip-count people).

Also note: I don't use unsalted butter, so I just reduced the amount of salt a teense.

GOD SPEED!

Done. I made the original recipe as well, and did half semi and half milk chocolate, also with fewer chips (for Sean). Once his were in the oven, I added more chips and chopped pecans.
The true test will be in about fifteen minutes, I guess!
But man, I gotta say, the dough is delish!!
And also, whoops, I used salted butter and the full amount of salt. Heh. Extra big glass of milk may be needed for salty cookies....

They are very good - I couldn't eat any until this morning though.
I really did eat WAY too much dough last night.

Better than Martha's

Especially if you add a handful of pecans.

You can use decaf instant coffee. I find that mixing it with the vanilla is a good way to avoid odd little black spots in the cookies.

It's one of the joys of my day. I love crossing it. I especially loved taking the bus to school because then I could really watch and I didn't have to pay attention to driving.
