I'm pressed for time today because I have a lot of papers that I should be grading, but I had to make a run for Larry's Market to pick up salad fixings. Tonight, I'm heading over to this fine lady's house to eat dinner and play Settlers of Catan. Woot! While I love food and I love Settlers, the exciting thing here is that I've never met her before. I've read her online journal for a while and said something last week about how some time we could cook/play Settlers till we pass out together and she came back with "okay, what day?" Man, AWESOME! I love it when that works. So, I'm heading over to her house this evening bearing a tasty salad and red wine.

Here's the thing about Larry's Market. I can't get enough of it. It's on par with office supply stores -- I could just wander around touching everything and oohing and aahing for hours. I had to cut my trip short because of all the stuff I have to do before I leave (augh! 150 essays to grade!) but I still managed to marvel at the many kinds of dijon mustard, ogle the spice racks, peruse the bulk candy, stare at the curious produce, get lost in the wine aisles, and drool over fancypants chocolates. O Larry's, how I love thee.

I'm double plus excited about tonight's salad. I ate it at Janelle's for book club last month and it was knock-em-dead good. Getting the recipe has been a fiasco and a half but I finally have it and I'll be whipping up the dressing shortly. It's comprised of The salad comprises baby spinach, spicy pecans, nectarines, and a shallot dressing. Shallots! I'm cooking with shallots! This is very cool. Buying wine was also a funny experience since I never, ever do it. I think the last time I bought wine was for Emily's end-of-summer bash two years ago so I could make sangria. Today I went in the wine aisle(s) and immediately located the Wine Guy so he could give me guidance. Per his recommendation, I picked up a Ravenswood 2001 Vintners Blend California Zinfandel. I hope I did good.

In totally unrelated news, if I knew how to knit, I would make this and this. I <3 Knitty.

I will not lie -- I didn't know about that one. As unnatural as the "correct" way seems, I have changed it.

Man, it is going to be SO HARD to get this out of my system. Dictionary.com had an interesting statistic: "Even though careful writers often maintain this distinction, comprise is increasingly used in place of compose, especially in the passive: The Union is comprised of 50 states. Our surveys show that opposition to this usage is abating. In the 1960s, 53 percent of the Usage Panel found this usage unacceptable; in 1996, only 35 percent objected."

You realize that you're fighting a losing battle, right? Give it ten years at most and the OED will list "comprised of" in an accepted usage note. Count on it. :)

that is so depressing. first, it becomes acceptable to pronounce the t in often. now this. it's just wrong, i tell you. comprise is not a synonym of compose.
Compose means to create or put together.
Comprise means to contain, to include all or embrace.

bleh. the english language is going to hell.

The English language is TOTALLY going to Hell. That's what happens to languages, though, you know? I don't know what else we can expect with this many people using and abusing it daily. The alternative is to have some ridiculous institution like the Academie Francais and that is just too, too silly for words. I used to get all bent out of shape about stuff like this but it's a fight I can't win.

Yes, you did well.

And man, regarding that sweater with hearts, don't you just love the ruffles around the wrist and the v-neck? Super cute.

I'm going to pretend that you didn't just correct my intentionally misused adjective.

As for the sweater, I can't get over it. In the gallery you can see a photo of some girl who knit it with regular black yarn and then super fuzzy fluffy angora pink stuff for the hearts. It just made me melt. The ruffles are the best part 'cause they sneak up on you.

You are so evil! I had never been to knitty.com before and I now I just spent way too much time there checking out the patterns. So much cool stuff. I have to learn how to knit again - I learned for a play in high school, but kinda dropped it after that. Would be fun to actually make something...

While some of the things are pretty frumpy and not what I would want to knit, there are a bunch of SUPERCUTE patterns at knitty that just make me drool. I lurve it. You should knit something! I can only crochet scarves. :)
