Linux Mobile Internet
Today I was trying to setup Internet access via my mobile phone (GPRS) Nokia 3650, T-Mobile. I had to use Infrared port
as we're only taking old laptop to Vacation which does not have BlueTooth. It is a challange but it is fun.

I love such processes when you have several steps which you progress slowly. First challange was to set up Infrared port
which took a while to resolve but resolved funny way - my IBM Thinkpad R51 had it disabled by default in BIOS.

Next was finding out how to connect phone in proper mode. "Infrared" phone connection is not what one needs. Attempting to use it lead to connection establishment failure which I spent quite a while trying to troubleshoot. Finally I tried "Modem" instead and I could see phone successfully connected.

The next tricky thing is - even though you should use "irattach /dev/ttyS0" port /dev/ircomm0 should be used for communications. Well obviously docs say so :)

Now I could make my phone to dial which was great but I still was to set up GPRS connection. There were several instructions in the internet but neither of them worked fine. Just ATD*99# Resulted in strange result - connection
was established but PPP dropped connection after authentication with Reason 10.

I set GPRS options in the phone but it looks like this was not enough. Magic command AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com" In the init phase finally got PPP to succesfully let me in.

The last problem was connection being dropped after 2 minutes. Happly I already spent a while reading configuration files and I expected this to be lcp-echo problem. I commented out "lcp-echo-interval 30" and "lcp-echo-failure 10"
and it seems to run great.

Instructions also say about disabling hardware flow control and using "local" mode rather than "modem" mode - I did not need these

Speed - I never used Mobile Internet before so it is hard for me to compare. You can download few mails and browse
web if you're patient. Pings are however some 1000ms which would make interractive sessions pretty painful.
