From shopping bags to shopping blogs

Amazon.com institutes personalized blogs, AKA Plogs, for every reader. I'm not joking.

I love blogs. They've become a daily part of my life, and my replacement for newspapers and magazine. I discovered the plog when I went to Amazon to add a book I'd read about on a blog to my Wish List. But...WTF?!?! Anyone have any ideas why a) this would actually be a good idea, or b) why they might stupidly think its a good idea? Are they just jumping on a buzzword wagon, or is there some sense to this strategy?

It looks like an attempt to strengthen the community around the site. The logic being: the more time people spend looking at the site, the more chances (and perhaps more likely) they will have to be compelled to make purchases.

I think they are "just jumping on a buzzword wagon".

This is just a trendy new format for stuff they've been doing for quite a while now (personalized front-page info). I find it slightly more useful than the previous version, so I'm willing to overlook the dorky name.

Shopping Bags
There is absolutely no reason to advertise anyone especially corporations. You just need to be true to your own style and advertise for yourself.
