| My Deployment Wishlist |
[Nov. 21st, 2010|08:50 pm] |
Several of you have made queries regarding stuff that I may need (or want) for my excursion downrange. I'm posting this with a bit of reluctance since most of you who have known me for more than a couple days know that I don't like to advertise and I don't like to ask for anything. But since there is no way for me to deter you I might as well try and mitigate the damage and prevent people from sending me gallons of sunblock. Please be advised that USPS takes approximately 2-3 weeks to get mail/packages from CONUS to APO (longer during holidays) so nothing that will spoil, rot, take root, possess, or detonate. And because I am a control freak please leave a comment with contents if you send something just so no one double taps and I end up with eight copies of Rome Season 1 and 96 lbs of gummy bears.
letters - real snail mail letters. Seriously. music - mp3 format on CDs. punk, metal, goth, industrial, alternative, folk-ish, classical movies & tv - avi format on CDs. Please don't send me real DVDs because I don't want to have to throw them away.

| Peace Day and chest bursters |
[Sep. 20th, 2008|10:13 pm] |
Today is UN Peace Day. President Karzai has requested that Afghan Security Forces and International Security Assistance Forces cease offensive operations for 24 hours. We said OK. Let's see if the Taliban are just as sporting.
Took my stress test. They have ruled out the likelihood of heart trouble. However, there is still the chance an angry acid spitting alien may come bursting out of my abdomen and sing the Michigan Rag.
Not so great actually. |

Two days after the 9-11 run I'm still feeling a little tight. While the distance is roughly the same I did take a faster than normal pace in order to remain slightly competitive (and still got left behind by MLS).
Regardless of the discomfort I upped by distance to 10 miles today (roughly) so I can prepare for the Army 10 miler and the 20 mile multiple sclerosis run.
Dreams have been pretty vivid last couple of days but I'm still feeling tired even after 7 hours of sleep. |

| | The Clash - Death or Glory | ] | Participating in a roadrace wasn't one of those things that I had originally planned for when I prepped for this deployment. The wonders of pogue-atory, you can have your chai latte smoothie quad sized and your Jihad too. Will wonders never cease? Personally I'm hoping for a wave pool, steaks cooked to order, cold beer on tap, and a Dunkin Donuts. Of course, commercial internet that doesn't suck would be good too.
The roadrace itself is 9.11 kilometers in length (approx 5.7 miles) and winds in and around BAF. I linked up with MLS just prior to start, even got promised breakfast if I would run with her *wink*. At the word go she took off like a bat out of hell and I lost sight of her about 6 minutes in. So much for breakfast.. Best part of the race was the non traditional course. Usually we'd run out to a halfway point and come back. Today we ran all over the compound like a scavenger hunt and I spent most of the race wondering where the hell are we going now. Caught up with MLS about 3/4 of the way through when the ankle she rolled 3 weeks ago started to hurt. Yeah, got beaten by a girl who's shorter than a lawn gnome, weighs, maybe a 110 lbs in full kit, and is moto enough to run like she's being chased by zombie sprinters on a fucked up ankle. Makes me feel like a puss. ;P
So I had a good time today. And after the race, ran other 3-4 miles so I could complete a Bagram loop. |

| 9-11 |
[Sep. 10th, 2008|09:48 pm] |
It's 9-11. The LJ clock is set for GMT/Zulu so technically it's still Wednesday in England. Seven years of a world turned upside down and enemies who hide in shadows. Forty years of shortsighted politics and bad decisions. We robbed Peter to pay Paul and thought technology could triumph over human interaction. We dropped the hammer and utilized hope as a course of action with devastating results. We've taken opinions on the internet and turned it into gospel truth. We've damaged the reputation of our country, submitted ourselves to mercurial whims and ignored the barbarians massing at the gates.
This war is going to go on long after I'm dead. I just don't know if I'll get a bullet in the face or in the back. Regardless, I have no regrets and I'm still going to man my post to the bitter end but I can smell the smoke and hear the fiddle from here.

I'm kinda bummed out about missing Dragon*Con this year. It sounds like a good time. But there is always next year...
The Cruxshadows - Windbringer
A hidden voice beneath the Thunder Cascades whispers reaching down A life less perfect in its living Is to real purpose summoned now As dream carved eyes sing empathy With wings made mortal to the search For essence weighed in temples razed Ascend the fires and salted earth
I can see the message breathing still I can hear the voices sounding deep inside I can feel the hero rising up above the silence Your soul remembers yet, the path that men forget
I bring the winds, to free you from your hesitation I call the storms to remind you what you are My faith endures for the sake of something less and more in them And so I bring the winds, to echo in your heart
Drifting scenes of shameful things To haunt corrupted will The Lion pacing at the edge Guards the keep that faith once built Find constitution in your soul A vessel for your light Eyes drift toward the northern fires A beacon to the ocean of the night |

| McCain / Palin |
[Aug. 29th, 2008|11:20 pm] |
This just got interesting. I'm guessing that Gov Palin's nomination as VP is suppose to hit a few key points...
1.) Someone to balance out McCain's age 2.) Has viewpoints that are going to appeal to traditional conservatives who are put off by McCain the maverick 3.) Has a record for fiscal conservatism, and fighting corruption 4.) Someone with appeal to blue collar/small town America 5.) Despite possible ideological differeneces may appeal to feminists as someone breaking the glass ceiling, and the subset of Americans that may vote based purely on gender/race. 6.) No DC insider baggage.
This narrows the lead a little bit. However some may argue that McCain may have shot himself in the foot with this one. In a Palin / Biden debate, Palin needs to come off as charming/likable while avoiding the stupid comments and responding with intelligent answers just long enough for Biden to talk himself into a corner.
Anything the Democrats do for a counterattack will have to be carefully measured so they don't come off looking like assholes. |

| DragonForce - Black Winter Night |
[Aug. 29th, 2008|01:04 am] |
Day after day as I bodies slay And the sun becomes dark in the sky Everything's lost for this human race And the dawn of a new age will rise
Rays of sunlight now are gone Only visions of ice will remain The fallen ones and forgotten souls Will rise up over the slain
No more hope as we raise our hands to the sky No more dreams as the rivers run dry
Everything's lost all is left astray Only sorrow and sadness remains Curtains have dropped on our fallen world And the forces of darkness shall rise
Why can't you see what has happened to thee Can you not open your eyes Everything's lost there is no retreat And the valleys echo with pain
No more hope as we raise our hands to the sky No more dreams as the rivers run dry
On the endless sea of madness we sail forever more And the endless tears of sadness towards the distant shores When the flame has died forever we stand one and all With the power of the almighty sword
We fight the battle on the fields tonight To save us from the master of all evil sign And to the battle on forever standing strong We feel the fire power of the night warriors
No more tomorrow Dying of sorrow Over the mountains and up through the trees Traveling across seven seas
No more hope as we hold our hands to the sky No more dreams as the rivers run dry
On the endless seas of madness we sail forever more And the endless tears of sadness towards the distant shores When the flame has died forever we stand one and all With the power of the almighty sword
We fight the battle on the fields tonight To save us from the master of all evil sign And to the battle on forever standing strong We feel the fire power of the night warriors
On the endless seas of madness we sail forever more And the endless tears of sadness towards the distant shores When the flame has died forever we stand one and all With the power of the almighty sword
We'll fight the battle on the fields tonight To save us from the master of all We fight the battle on the fields tonight To save us from the master of all evil sign
And to the battle on Forever standing strong We feel the fire Power of the night warriors
The power of the night warriors...
