Libs in Toronto (October 2004)

The Libertines are one fine and memorable mess
by Adam Radwanski

Having more experience talking to politicians than musicians, it's been slightly disillusioning to learn the latter's media dealings are often even more polished than the former's. So as frustrating as an encounter with the shambolic Libertines can be, it's also a bit refreshing.

It's not that all of the headline-grabbing East Londoners exist in a full state of chaos. Drummer Gary Powell, for instance, is a delight - so engaging over the phone that he almost manages to dispel the stereotype of the bratty British rock star, even when he's explaining that the others don't mess with him because they know he can kick their asses.

The Libertines' dynamic, though, is built around their co-frontmen, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. And while they've proven to be two of England's most gifted songwriters and performers, evoking enough memories of the Clash that Mick Jones was recruited to produce both of their dazzling albums, they've also proven two of its most erratic.

For now, Doherty has been removed from the equation entirely. Although the lyrics on the Libertines' eponymous sophomore disc read like a blow-by-blow account of his drug woes, his addictions are so severe that the band is touring without him. The last time this happened, he responded by burglarizing Barat's home; this time, he's opted to form his own band and tour the U.K.

That leaves Barat as The Responsible One, at least according to the British press. Encountering him in person, one realizes these things are all relative.

Barat breezes into Toronto's Opera House hours late for the interviews scheduled in advance of his band's sold-out show, still shaking off the effects of the night before. Accompanied by bassist John Hassall, he mumbles his way through most of a television interview before staggering away to exchange tongues with a comely brunette in the corner of the room, [I'm assuming that's Annalisa; didn't she follow them around on that tour?] leaving Hassall to fend for himself. Dragged back into the frame for a couple more questions, he finally escapes the camera's glare and reluctantly accompanies me onto his tour bus.

He knows he's a terrible interview, repeatedly apologizing for it. But that doesn't help much. Combine his thick accent with a bad hangover and a nasty case of the sniffles, and it's hard to have much idea what he's on about.

Not that it really matters much. For the first few minutes, Barat is mostly preoccupied with applying some sort of moisturizer to his face (someone gave it to him, he insists, though it looks as though someone would have done better to shove him under a showerhead); for the rest, he tunes in and out of questions as he tries to keep his eyes open. I leave with almost nothing decipherable on my tape, save for his explanation that he's carrying on with the tour to "try and be an example for our friends who've slipped by the wayside."

By the end, I'm half wishing that Powell would burst through the door and lay a beating on his bandmate. But as a ragged and rollicking set later that night proves, the band's lack of polish is what works for it. If the Libertines weren't a mess, they wouldn't be the Libertines - they'd just be another band that's pleasant to deal with and easy to forget.

Wow, thanks for digging that up. I love hearing people's stories about meeting bands, and this certainly sounds like a wonderful experience. How nice of Carl to come out and say hello to you-- and KISS you later!

And your name is lovely and memorable, and if you really hate it, you could always have it changed to the Spanish version.

Thanks again, you lucky little Carl-kissing tart, you.

heheh your welcome!

i also love hearing stories about people meeting bands, they always sound so exciting(or funny lol).

yeah,i had a fun night..i just wish i could've seen them when things wern't so tense and melancholy for carlos, even though he was in good sprirts that night, you could tell he didnt wanna be singing without peter beside him :o(

the kiss...errrrmmmmmmm yeah.it's weird for me talking about that because i get all reserved lol,he was really nice about it(especially being harrassed by your mother later that night being asked constantly "have you been drinking/smoking?!?!" )...but the strange thing is,he'll kiss other people yet you can sense his girlfriend lurking around behind the scenes watching you,it's freaky!!(she was right above me on the balcony,so she could see everything that was going down in the pit o_o!)

Question:i never knew the spanish version for the name "Dove"(im about 1/4th spanish but i can't even form a whole sentence using that language lol, sad),could you give me some insight on that?

anyway,i can't wait til carlos busts out with a new album, then he can come back here to america and do it all over again!! *evil grin*

xxx

You know, every report I've read of that tour, whether it's an 'official' review or a fan report like yours, says something like that, and in the photos and videos he just looks relentlessly depressed. It's so sad.

the kiss

Well, it's not like you jumped him and shoved your tongue down his throat! He is very kissy, isn't he?

she was right above me on the balcony,so she could see everything that was going down in the pit

Oh, very interesting.

'Paloma' is the Spanish word for dove.

can't wait til carlos busts out with a new album, then he can come back here to america and do it all over again!!

Yeah! *waits* *waits* *waits some more* OK, maybe I won't hold my breath after all.

Thanks again for the report, I really liked it.

hahaha um thanks,im glad you enjoyed the story!

hehe yeah...damn i was so nervous when he did that.she could see just about everyone an everything form up top of the balcony,so him doing that tongue thing wasn't very flattering at the time, but now i look back at that and go "thank god she didn't jump in the air and clobber me!" lol.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

aww man...you know before you said that,i didn't even think about that part...(yeah i'm so naive.it probably WAS used for something other than his face)but i just saw it at the end of the bed and i was thinking aloud "oh,he uses shampoo!" and then Anthony was like "what?" and i said "nothing...*cough*"

[I'm assuming that's Annalisa; didn't she follow them around on that tour?]

Yes. Her day job is working as a cockblocker.

Barat is mostly preoccupied with applying some sort of moisturizer to his face (someone gave it to him, he insists, though it looks as though someone would have done better to shove him under a showerhead)

I think Mr. Adam Radwanski wanted to be the one to do this. Or maybe I just have a filthy mind. Great interview, thanks!

Her day job is working as a cockblocker.

And her night job... ahem!

So, does anyone know if she had a real job before she met Carl and started living off him? I mean, was she a go-go dancer? A waitress? A librarian? Inquiring minds want to know.

I think Mr. Adam Radwanski wanted to be the one to do this.

I think so too, but not in a fun way. He sounds like he wanted to give Carl a stern talking-to; he comes across as a school principal type to me, who'd rather have a 'pleasant to deal with' band than The Libs.

I have no idea what she did before she met Carl, but I can predict her future career. I bet she will design a line of DPT burlesque inspired tank tops lingerie. This endeavor will be funded by Carl and sold at the exclusive fashion house known as Cafe Press.

Ok, I think with this comment I have now sealed my fate as the most petty and shallow Libs fan on LJ. :)

I'm not seeing it. Maybe she has her practical reasons for not wearing sleeves. She takes her job title of cockblocker very seriously, and must be ready at a moments notice to rumble with Peter.

It's weird how not-photographed she's been until fairly recently; maybe it's because people didn't really know who she was.

I liked it, but clearly the interviewer didn't. It was kind of refreshing to read a piece where the journalist didn't know anything about the Libertines and didn't care, because of the wonderful snarky lines like the one about Carl needing a shower.

oh most definitely. this and that other line about them getting on the tourbus and being horrified when someone suggested showers are my favourite 'no, i don't fucking adore them and they smell'-bits from interviewers who... well, don't fucking adore them *lol*
