so i still have to get myself to learn to play my banjo. its getting on 2 years since I got it for the holidays from mom and dad. they will never tell me but I know pretty much that the instrument + case and such was probably $350.
I think I just don't know how to approach it. I mean they gave me a book, but Im not sure I want to learn bluegrass style first. I suppose I dont really know, but I always just wanted it to come from me. Like, I already knew how to write letters to form words, so typing using a keyboard started OK. I would look at the keys and know which one to press.
But with music, I have to discover my own musical language. Its true there are letters in music as well, and you can use them to put together words in music, but its not something that I am familiar with. Its like trying to type with a korean keyboard. I hear the sounds and i understand basically how to execute the manuvers (albeit shakily) but to put together something coherent is just not what I can do right now. maybe its like typing on a keyboard with blank keys.
anyway Im SLOWLY working on it. discovering the fact that I might just have a language like this is a step forward, i think.

8:17 am - geeky update
|
So last night I thought I bricked my desktop, but after a few minutes of pacing and yelling I calmed down and was able to unbrick it. (to my own amazement!)
Anyway the thing I was trying to accomplish, updating the BIOS to get it to boot from DVDs, did work out. Then the next step is to try to get OS X installed from a DVD on to an external drive so I can try using the machine for Final Cut without BUYING a Mac. I will later, I just don't have the cash right now :O.
So that's where my PC is at right now: slowly. installing. Leopard. I think it's going to take another 3 hours from now to get it done because it failed last night before I realized I needed to enable AMD support plugins. If this still doesn't work, I'm going to halt the project to keep using my PC normally. It's not worth the effort otherwise.
Anyway that's my geeky update from my not-so-geeky laptop.
EDIT: and by 3 hours i mean 12 >.>

Yay lunar eclipse for being right where i needed it to be to see it well. I spent about 50 minutes outside and almost fell asleep watching the red moon. :D
in other news, I hope you're all following this new flavor of war: Anonymous vs. the Church of Scientology.
basically those in the administration, and as far as i understand it those who have ever run the place, are greedy, sladerous, murderous people. I think that beliefs are all right as long as they dont cost anything and as long as they dont oppress others' beliefs. from what i hear Anonymous wants to deconstruct the Church and let the followers of LRH's Tech go on learning if they want at no cost.

9:07 pm - addictions and sobriety
|
So after a long, long time, I am finally quitting World of Warcraft. My accounts (plural!) deactivate sometime this month, but I'm already finished playing. I have neglected my so-called life for longer than I ever realized. There are so many things I let slide because I was too busy waking up, getting on WoW, and going to bed. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast right up to the last minutes that I played. It was talking to real people from all over that kept me going. Violent Arrogance kept me going and I felt like I belonged to something. I actually feel the worst that I'm leaving them without a healer, but this is something that has to be done. This is an addiction. A slow, methodical, calculating disease.
Anyway, I don't want it to get to be tl;dr, so instead, I'll just post a big photo story after ( the cut )

please dont buy the following brands of computer: HP Compaq eMachines Gateway Sony to a certain extent
Working in the PC repair field, I have seen these to be the worst machines in both hardware and software. AND they want to charge you $700+ for anything. note that HP owns Compaq and Gateway owns eMachines. If you are getting a prebuilt machine, save yourself the hassle and get a Dell or a Mac, with runners up being IBM/Lenovo and Toshiba. Get a long warranty, ESPECIALLY on a laptop. As far as Sony computers are concerned, it is just very hard to get any support info and not easy to open and replace parts. They are almost as difficult as Macs in terms of hardware service. so yeah. if you were thinking about it, thats my opinion

Im a pretty positive guy normally, but when I owe people money for trifles like lunch, I feel like a failure. I dont know why i feel like that, i just do. I have the dough but its tied up in my debit account so i cant just hand someone a $5 bill, i have to collect everyones money and go get the food. so I already owe Steve cash from yesterday, and today i was going to buy his lunch but Jeries just goes out without waiting for me so i can pay. great. not only do i not get to pay Steve back, but now i owe Jeries too? and if not him then May, who always wants to pay for my lunch.
The feeling i have is because others are generous when i want to be the one being generous. yet another reason why i would probably hate living with someone like me. :P

It's Mabon, as my Pagan friends would say. For me that means another year older, but so far not much to tell. I did get a kilt from the parents today, WHICH IS AWESOME. i guess they call it "the pride of Scotland" tartan (plaid pattern). i doubt they would have the Clark tartan ready-made but i could probably come up with one if i got my act together and found the material. apparently theres a hat on the way too.

back from Indy. we ended up going to GenCon after all. just for saturday. they gave us FREE WoW TCG starter packs (which sell for $15) which is cool. we didnt get any scratch off cards, sadly. Bought a card game for the office called Tech Support, and got some business cards from places i want to look over later like Utilikilts.
we saw some kickass games there such as a card game with a camera where when you placed a card, the 3D rendering and animation of that card showed up on top of it. very cool. we also got to see people playing the next WoW expansion and matt got to play Starcraft 2 twice. I took some pics which shal be posted later.

|
The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.
OK, while i think they did a horrid job rendering April's face for the cinematics in first game (think "face" and "shovel" and "hit"), they make up for it by giving the player something nice to look at while Zoë runs around in her... well-fitting pants in the sequel.
Even though the sequel probably could have stood on its own and the graphics are way more advanced, i still believe that it is very very necessary to play the original game first. especially for the Death Star quotations. "Man, look at the size of that thing!"
There is actually fighting in Dreamfall which i had really hadn't expected as that wasn't an issue with the first one. It did make it more realistic tho. The ending for both of them was... well they were very enjoyable.
Its kind of too bad theres really only one way to go about the game. it's linear and the choices you make don't really change anything. there are frustrating parts, but that's the point: to be frustrated right along with the characters. Definitely worth the $20 i paid for the two game package.

But in light of the last book coming out recently, i figured i would post this for a laugh. its funny i swear.

11:27 am - i may not see dead people, but...
|
for quite a while i have taken to looking at someone and watching them get older. to me it feels almost like one of those age progression programs like they use on CSI or some such other TV show, except that it doesn't stop at like 10 years later. I watch someone age to their 80s within about 20 seconds or less.
One of the machines in the office has a desktop picture of two children in kayaks smiling for the camera. I watched the girl become a smart and artsy teenager, grow into a beautiful adult, get married, have kids, and grow old as i looked. Its kind of a bittersweet melody of life.

So lots of things have been in the news lately... Paris Hilton goes to jail Dick Cheney can't figure out what department he's a part of Potential impeachment The war in Iraq
but something that I dont think has made it very far, mostly because it's not the newest news, and partly because it's not nearly as tits-blood-and-stupidity as the rest, is that i am seeing a lot about UFOs in the last few days. a couple of articles cought my eye and i cant help but read on.
I have long been interested in the idea of life beyond our planet and how if it were revealed to the public as true, society may have to be rewritten and a lot of powerful people may lose that power. but if we stop to think - to really think of just how vast the universe is - it seems impossible that out of an unfathomable number of stars, with an even more gigantic number of planets hurtling through the blackness of space... are so naive to think that we are alone in this great cosmos?
I do not think that humans as they exist today, except for a very select few gifted individuals, are capable of understanding and grasping just how much there is out there. i can't say that i am one of those people, at least not that i am aware of, but i can get a faint sense of what it might be like to be a small dot or less in something's night sky. where some alien child is looking up at the stars, pointing at our patch of sky, and asking it's tribal matriarch, "do you think there is life up there? strange beings who have lives completely different from our own?"
I think it's quite silly, then, to be bickering over who is right and who is wrong, which celeb is in trouble this week. just. simply. BE. We dont have a lot of room left on this planet, and we may end up burning it out before we are able to expand beyond it. And then if we finally do take wing to the heavens, WE become extraterrestrials as we travel to other planets in search of a place to live. what then?

well i finally bought DDR and a foam pad mat. I got the new one, SuperNOVA, for the PS2. the only thing i dont like is the SINGLE, versus DOUBLE, tap to change difficulty. it makes it almost impossible to stay on the pad while i select a song for fear that i will accidently select the hardest difficulty. i cant find a way to change this. but yeah its fun. video game exercise! WOO!
in other gaming news, i have not REALLY played WoW for what... two months now? i started a horde character and hes like level 13. I actually want to get back into it to be able to chat with tianamolko over guild voice chat again. <3 I just ran through Warcraft III again. still have frozen throne to do. Im mostly just cheating through because i wanted to relive the storyline and see where some things in WoW came from, like Dalaran's destruction.
but for now, off to work. Im the only clinic dude there today. :D

got back from acen last night around 10:30pm, supprisingly awake considering the 4 hours of sleep i had. dressed up as a mudkip. heard at least 23 instances of people shouting it out, and like 4-5 photo ops (a first!) and someone hit on me too (also a first!) - i declined.
we cooked 1/36 of the ramen, and that one ramen wasnt even consumed. gg xerxes_dreamer.
saw some people from Wayne State and from the softball team. Got to hang out with Kris, whom i had met last year but never really got to talk to. :D
the rave lasted till 6AM!!! HOLYSHIT. i actually didnt dance the whole time. Kris, Tom and I danced for an hour or so and then came to find out that Kris' camera had been lost/stolen :(.
never went to ANYTHING con-related (screenings, pannels, etc) except the rave and the dealers room, where i didnt even look hard enough to buy much.
not that it wasnt fun. not at all! we managed to have dinner with xerxes_dreamer's parents, which was fantastic! Met their (BIG) puppy too. <3
we loaded the tub down with ice, pop and alcohol, which was virtually untouched by the end. (i like how the ice left a black ring aroud the tub. THE ICE DID).
will post pics when i get them from peoples.

physical pain, as i have experienced it, is neural. mental. and i am able to block it out. albeit only be while i actively concentrate on it. I am not happy with the fact that i am still only able to quiet a certain amount of pain, and only while i am in my right mind. if, for example, i take a nasty spill off a curb and become breathless, i cant very well concentrate on removing the pain from the gash in my knee. it takes a few seconds. I feel that more severe wounds would take longer to mentally rebound from. and so i am not satisfied with that. too bad im not masochistic, eh?
softball this weekend was great fun. that was sunday, its now tuesday night. im still sore. the majority of my muscle stiffness comes from the soreness, but i manage to walk upright when i remember to ignore the pain.

I watched An Inconvenient Truth again.
At the part about vehicle fuel economy in different parts of the world (and how we're last), I was thinking that, with the gas prices increasing, and the technology available to drasticly improve efficiency already well established, are car manufacturers working with oil companies to steadily increase crude prices, and then suddenly... AN EPIPHANY! fuel efficient cars! what a breakthrough (that happened 10 years ago)! I mean, now we can still pay $4 a gallon for gas, but drive longer on it! Not to mention the larger customer base due to population increases.
on a related note, i see some interesting changes happening in the United States... the media wising up to Jack Thompson's anti-game tirades for example... something, and im not sure what it is yet, is shifting in the background of this nation and in the world. It is unsettling and at the same time, it seems like I welcome a change from the current bleak outlook. Maybe our country will decide to pull back its tendrils from every corner of the globe and let the world breathe on its own for once, instead of us assuming that everyone needs life support.

3:31 pm - 911 caller harassed by Detroit Police about repeatedly robbed house

Detroit resident Rob has been taking care of his neighbor's house while the owner sorts out two mortgages and the loss of her husband. The house is broken into many times, but each 911 call is met with extreme friction from the local police, and eventually a citation and arrest warrant against the author. This is an ongoing saga.
