Women don't listen
- So I was working a usual tuesday shift and one of my ex's friend comes in the store wanting to rent Turok the game. There is no credit card on file so I had to ask her to get her mom, since her mom pays for everything. Her mom comes in, angry as hell asking me to explain the Pre Auth for New generation games. I explain how I need her card and she makes a scene how she had a bad idenity theft back in the day. So I reassure her that we cannot use her credit card for anything, it is just needed for the Pre Auth. So finally she coms around and gives me her number and everything. So I ring up the movies and the game and I say "you're total is 10.." something or other. So I hint for her to use the pin pad. And she says in a snappy voice "can't you just pull up the number I just gave you?" and as much as i wanted to choke her I said 'no because that is fraud and we can't do that" so she swipes her card and rushes out of the store complaining about why I needed her card number when I just explained it.
And today is saturday...awesome day for a busy shift WOO

- Why am I still up... Ah well, it's saturday anyway.
The weather's been really inconsistent lately, 25 degrees one day and then 10 with rain the next. it was really sunny and nice this morning, then clouded up around noon, and now it's raining. I sure hope it clears up tomorrow morning, because I want to shoot a single round in practice.
Speaking of which, I bested my 30m personal record the day before yesterday. 354 out of 360, no warm up end (I should have not counted the first end, which was 58, because the next one after wrapping this round was a perfect 60). 30 has always been my weakest distance, usually averaging our in the low 340s, bringing me down in rank since the people I'm shooting with generally get close to or exceed 350. So I'm rather happy at the progress. (I did count for a second pass and got 349, which is still above my previous best of 347)
Thus the need for practice tommorrow, need to figure out what I'm doing right, and make it stay that way.
Today, I saw Charlie Wilson's War with Wakako. It just opened today, we're probably way behind everyone else again. I wonder what causes the half-year-or-longer delay on movies to come out here...
I enjoyed it quite a bit, thought the dialogue was witty and entertaining. The scene of Charie and Gus meeting in Charlie's office made the movie for me.
After having lunch in an Okinawa-themed restaurant (surprisingly well-designed... It was a gorgeous, tasteful atmosphere right in the middle between homely and classy, of course with lots of Okinawan stuff), we headed out to Shinjuku and went bowling. Both of us probably got the worst scores we ever had together. I just can't seem to figure bowling out...
Lastly, I just read some entries on Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's blogs about their trip to Japan (apparently Hot Fuzz is getting a summer release, about bloody time), via a link from a link from Mal's lj. And they made me realize how much I've started to take for granted about Japan... It's hard to imagine anymore how foreign Japan must be for someone who has no experience or knowledge about it. Of course I came here first after studying japanese studies for several years, so I never really got culture shock in the first place, that I know of.
It'd be fun to have some of my friends from Vienna who aren't uni-related, come over here and show them around. Simon, Marion, my sister... Sadly none of them has graced me with their presence yet.
Also, I realized I haven't posted any pictures in a while, so I added some.

People waiting for the Saikyo line. This is pretty much what I'm faced with every morning. I want to take a video of getting on the train, but so far I've been too much of a pussy to do so.

Shinjuku cityscape. For those of you who like such things.

Shinjuku viewed from the southern terrace, with the new Cocoon tower in the back. Really needs to be viewed at hi res.

Krispy Kreme in Shinjuku. I can't believe people are still lining up over an hour for fricking donuts, over a year in. the one in Saitama is far less crowded, by the way.

The package of the new "Cheese Cutlet Burger" at McDonald's. I love the text. It would destroy the beauty of it to translate it, so I won't.

Prince Caspian
- So Prince Caspian was pretty great. I enjoyed Peter and Caspian's "I'm the prettiest!" "No, I am!" pissing matches. Oh boys, don't you know Edmund is the prettiest of you all? That kid is adorable. Also, Susan was quite badass. Up with girls! And Reepicheep! Aw, I loved him when I was a kid, one of my favourite characters in the books. I think I even dressed up as him for Halloween one time. Can't quite remember. It's so nice to see the books I loved as a kid portrayed so well on the big screen (and by "well" I don't mean slavishly beholden to the source material. They're called "film adaptations" for a reason). Next up: Voyage of the Dawn Treader! I'm in line already.
My parents read the Narnia books to me and my brother when I was pretty little, I'm pretty sure it was before I could read. We actually went through the entire series four times. Then they tried to switch us over to new books, like George A. MacDonald's The Princess and The Goblin books. Of course I would have none of that, but then my mom showed me a blurb on the back of the MacDonald book where C.S. Lewis praised the book, and then I was okay with it (well, if C.S. Lewis says it's okay, then it must be). So blurbs actually work on impressionable young children. Alert the publishers!

Conan a Graham

I've gone back up to Canada to get this King city too done.
3 months to go and at the same time Marian is deep in her Conan story.
So it's been all drawing all day. I've been running my hands
under the tap lots so they don't cramp up. It seems to work.
Its been good. But I've been bad about returning emails and all that.
And I was only able to go to the emerald city con for a couple of hours.
I went in for lots more hospital check ups. This time was at the big Seattle Cancer Care building. They have cancer hats that they give out in the lobby.
I feel like medical technology has advanced since my last check up.
The barium drink(berry-yum) that they gave me for the cat scan was the best yet and after they took blood they put a thing on my arm so it wouldn't bruise. It's like mutherfucking flying cars.
Anyway, comic books.
I'm really happy with the new book so far. Here's some cover roughs that probly look nothing like the final cover. I doubt that TP is gonna let me do the giant 2. I want this book to be it's own animal and not just another issue of a series.

I used to always say that the more you draw the more you draw. It's so true.
Along with the pages I've been doing lots of stuff that has no buisness being printed.
Here's a pictue I drew of Marian dreaming of barbarian shit.

And don't worry that Otter thing isn't some horrible sleepybabymuffinface name for her. It's pat of an elaborate story I told her about when this comic book life pays off and we live in a huge palacial estate how I'll have the buttler bring in well trained animals in vests to wake her.
Perfectly reasonable.
And here's a comic I drew her, cause I'm all romantic like that:

Not to be outdone Marian did this awesome comic in between pages.

All Wark and no play..
Now I'm going to bed, the alarm's set for 8. Tommorow I draw like fire, because paper burns.

I has tickets

Barack Obama is coming to Billings on Monday and stopping at my old high school for a town hall meeting. WOOOO!!! Since this was just announced last night, I did not expect the tickets to go fast. They were free and being handed out at the Obama headquarters downtown from 10 to 5. My mom said she'd go down for me, and I thought, yeah, better cover my bases.
As you can see from up the photo up above (from the Billings Gazette), I'm very glad I didn't try to go at 11 like I planned. They were gone within two hours. But my mom got there early, got a place in line, and snagged a pair of tickets. (Thanks, Mom!!!) I don't know who's getting the second ticket, so I'll take wagers for the next two days. ;)

I need to meet this girl. She got in line at 5:30, and if you watch the video clip, she seemed rather loopy by the time the doors opened.

I am drawing at an alarming rate!
- I've never penciled this hard before! And I'm working full time! What the fuck my work ethic has leveled up loads! I used to be hard pressed to do a page a week! Dang! I drew three pages in the last two days, and I plan on drawing another tonight after I get off work! What the mess! Why did my work ethic have to wait until now to be good?! I just hope it keeps up. Hopefully the whole thing will be penciled by sometime in July, and then after my week sabbatical, i am gonna ink like hell and hopefully color the pages before school. Work-a-holic Timo in full effect! Goodness let me go to work!

Screens tend to not work when cables are unplugged at BOTH ENDS. Plugged in, rebooted, looks fine to me. Please continue testing.
How the hell it got in that state I don't know, because not only are the cables usually screwed on, but at one end there's a metal plate that has to be removed with a special tool before you can access the connectors to unscrew them... and that's nowhere to be seen.

Dreams in the Cat-House
- My sleep debt has been creeping up on me over the course of the week, so I decided to go to bed early last night, at 9:30. Alas, everything conspired against my sleeping. First it was the crackling I could hear in the walls, which I've been hearing for a few days. Matt sprayed for ants, but there's still the possibility it could be Brown Jenkins. Then it was the covers, sliding off left and right. Then it was the cats and their cat hair. Then it was a tickle in my throat.
Finally I was so annoyed that I went and slept in the guest room. Ah, blessed, blessed peace, with soft, 400 thread count sheets (I have crappy sheets on my bed, because I haven't bought sheets since I upgraded to a queen-sized bed), and no cat hair. It still took a while for my muscles to calm down (I think this is due to my dosage of citalopram being raised to 60mg, and the resulting akathisia) but I sleep wonderfully after that. Well, until Lira started scratching at the mirror in the hallway at 5:30 this morning.
*sigh* This is ridiculous. I have to go to my guest bedroom to really relax?
I really would love to permanently bar the cats from the master bedroom, because the quantity of cat hair the bed collects seriously bothers me. The problem is that they'll just claw at the door all night instead. Especially Yama. He just doesn't take hints. And Matt likes having them around when we sleep, though frankly, I don't see the added benefit. I could do without Lira climbing onto my sternum and licking my chin in the night, or waking up to find my feet paralyzed by Burnbright lying on them, or Brianna dive-bombing me from the loft.
I am not sleeping well, and I do not feel welcome in my own bedroom. This has seriously got to change.

did someone swap my friday for a monday?
- Chi's off on holiday today, so I had to get him a build of our game he could take away to try out, exactly the worst time for something to go wrong, so it did. Worked until 3am on an utterly, utterly ridiculous bug. Nailed it, but think I've actually managed to miss the returns time for my printed / signed / scanned / returned LJ nomination. AFAIK, I'm about 4th in the votes, but if they can't accept it, what a dumb way to screw up. Maybe that's god's way of saying I'm too busy.
Woke up and Liz has gone out for the day with Corben because I got to bed so late, so she knew I'd sleep through. I hate waking up to that. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it really makes me smile seeing Corben in the morning.

Amazingly enough, I know how this should work better than you
- Dear DNS record holder,
Just because I'm asking you to change the record for mail.ClientDomain.com does not mean that you need to verify mail can go there. Check the MX record, does it point to that address? No, it points to a spam filtering service. We've specifically locked down the onsite mail server so it doesn't accept connections from anywhere but the filtering service; of course you can't connect to it. Bring up the IP in a web browser and you'll verify it's correct. Also, it's helpful if you actually put the change in the first time we ask you to do so.
No love,
Me
Really, I understand why they asked. I deal with plenty of people myself so I know how dumb they can be. However, when the MX records don't point to that address and when they're bringing this up as we put in the request a second time because they failed to make the change the first time...

People are so goddamned picky
- Man, seems like everyone is picky these days about what they get from Paperbackswap. Three of the five books I've swapped in the past day have come with "conditions" on the swap.
I mean, I can understand asking for books that don't smell smokey. Some people are allergic to cigarette smoke. Fine, whatever.
But these requests get to me:
No bookcrossing please.
Why the fuck not? Does BookCrossing mar books in some secret, terrible way?
Even more from another Captain Dainty:
Please don't send hardcover books without dust jackets. Also, I would like my books not to be worn out and highly creased. Thank you.
Hello, this is Paper. Back. Swap. You are getting a reading copy. You are basically getting a free book. I think it's a bit tacky to be this demanding. If you want something in mint condition, go buy a new copy.
Now, my books are all in great condition. But I'm very tempted to reject these requests just because the requestors are being prissy bitches about it. At the very least I'll wait a few days to turn them around. Oh wait - the last time I did that someone PMed me on day two to ask "Are you going to mail this?" Yeah, I know you can't wait another day for Temple of the Winds. I'm so sorry. Maybe you should pick up Robert Jordan in the meantime.
Amusingly, the prissy-bitch requests always come on the worst books. Yeah, you want The Bellmaker? Well, you have shitty taste, to boot.
What's even more amusing is the fact that I'm complaining about this on the internet.

Oh for the love of...
- Dear ISP who's about as useful as tits on a bull: when we asked you to change a secondary MX record to one of your mail servers (as the client in question only has one mail server) and you go ahead and do so, how does it not occur to you that it might be a good idea to set the bloody server to even accept mail addressed to said client? Queuing it would be nice too if, you know, it's not too much trouble. What, did you really think I was just asking you to change the MX record so it looks pretty when I do a lookup?

- I had to share
kadath's and Matt's take on BondGrrl's "level 6 pole dancer" accomplishment:
kadath: How does one become a Level 6 pole dancer? Sounds like a prestige class...probably you should start off as a rogue and make Dex your primary?
Matt adapted it to Spycraft, writing:
As I mentioned last night, Pole Dancer sounds more like part of the characters 'origin' from Spycraft. Instead of a Determined Commando(or whatever Fatasha is), you might have a Shifty Pole Dancer.
Benefits would be something along the lines of:
* Gain the Fan Service feat, waiving all pre-requisites.
* Once per session you can improve the disposition of one non-villain NPC without having to make a roll.
* Every time you gain one rank in the Profession skill, you gain one rank in the Impress skill.
* You gain the Profession focus Stripper, with a forte in Pole Dancing.

People with too many usericons!
Yeah, yeah, I know. That's about ALL of you out there, in LJ land, heads whipping round and staring at me with your beady little eyes! Oh, I know, alright!
With your movie icons (including obligatory Gay Legolas animated GIF) and your pictures of cats and your Eddie Izzard sketches condensed into 10,000 pixels of in-joke, and your miniature cat macros, and your cats dressed as Legolas and your pictures of your genitalia and your cat's genitalia and your macroed, animated Legolas-gay-cat-genitalia icons. OH I KNOW YOU!
Those of you that DO have any pictures of yourself (from the neck up), will have taken the time to identify said icons as such, firstly out of an OCD compulsion to make them fit in with all the other relentlessly credited and attributed icons, but secondly in case the PIXEL THIEVES COME IN THE NIGHT and STEAL YOUR ICONS! (selling them into slavery in Azerbaijan). There's a lot of that.
Christ, worst of all, the rages people get in when someone steals their precious icon and does not credit it! CALL THE INTERNETS POLICE! THIS BASTARD STOLE MY POSTAGE-STAMP-SIZED PICTURE OF MY CAT TEA-BAGGING LEGOLAS!
I'm just saying - and bear with me on this - that you're all hideously unnattural freaks and if I had my way, you would be put to the sword in your sleep.

Today we had what should have been at least two paragraphs in the subject line alone. I had to view the raw dump of the incoming email because our ticketing system wouldn't display the entire subject line.

I think Matt will kill me if I watch this series one more time...
- Due to a combination of reasons (beabondgrrl.com,
kadath reading cheesy vampire novels), I ended up talking about Hellsing far more last night than I have in eons. Brings back memories, it does...
For those of you who are new-ish to this journal, I should probably point out that I was totally, completely obsessed with this series for many years. I remember it was one of the fansubs we got to watch at NonCon (Vassar's geek con) in 2002, and I clung to my love of it almost up until 2007, when I wrote my last fic review for Fics from Hell, the scathing Hellsing fic review site that I ran which introduced me to many of you (
sir_hellsing,
ruxi, and
urwen_sakurafu, to name just a few).
Anyway, I won't bore my long-time readers with what the series is about, but here's a wiki article if you want to know more. It is by far, by far my favorite vampire tale of all time.
All of this got me in the mood to get back to the series again... and Matt groans, knowing just how dreadful the Hellsing fandom was, and how long I was tied up in it.
And then I remembered that some of my Brandeis friends are going to be around this summer, and
natbudin and
v_cat are moving out my way, and I thought... hey. None of these guys know about this part of me. None of them have been infected yet. I need to show them the awesomeness!
Admittedly, there are now OAVs--which I still haven't seen--but I have the happy TV series right on my shelf. It's awesome right up through the first eight or nine episodes! ... then it kinda sucks.
Would anyone be interested in being indoctrinated instigated inculcated introduced to the series with a little party at the Lunencastle? Possibly this weekend, or, if not, in June?
ETA: I seem to have lost my young Vlad icon. Drat. My only Hellsing icon now is the Go Tits! Integra one, which is a huge in-joke and doesn't portray the proper feeling for every post.

More old junk
- I feel like I have a never-ending supply of old notes, sketches, odds and ends, but, uh, I don't. Anyway, here's some more.
That page there is the FIRST PAGE EVER DRAWN!
And if you click here, you can see the original plot outline for the first half of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, scribbled down the margin of a page of notes.
On my flickr there's some other stuff, like pages of script, and I even dug up one of the original release party flyers.

tranquilise her!
- Bah.
Not as clever as I think I am.
Liz chastised me heavily for seeing to Corben because at that time of morning, if he wakes, I'm meant to leave him to just go back to sleep of his own accord, even if he's upset, because feeding him incentivises him to wake at that time in future.
Go team me :(
In other news, while I was productive as a motherfucker last night, it is really unwise to drink 3 litres of generic redbull. Woke up twitching. Still am. Someone hit me with a tranquiliser dart.
Tranquiliser! That's an ace word! To make something more tranquil by force! Hah!
Yep. Mind's broken. Ouch.

Sigh
- People who work with webservers. I know a few of you probably read this.
IS IT POSSIBLE for a server that has been running the same websites with the same code for months to suddenly slow down, with no apparent increase in traffic causing it, and have the problem be due to unoptimized code and database calls that are my fault?
Is it possible for a server that's been running this unoptimized code for months to somehow just not be able to do it anymore?
I would think that this is not possible, but maybe I'm wrong?
The support staff at Dreamhost seems convinced that it is possible. They haven't really explained to me exactly HOW it is. The help they gave me was essentially that I needed more RAM. I was rather cross about this. They were cross in return. I apologized. They aren't responding to me at the moment.
My site ran terribly today, but gradually, it's coming around. If this ends up being some strange mysterious problem that fixes itself, that'd be grand. But this experience was one of the most terrible I've had with Dreamhost in years. And I mean years. I was going to hit my tenth anniversary with them in December.
Their support staff acts like underpaid, disgruntled workers who look up their solutions on Wikipedia now.
I heard some good things about iweb.ca...
