"What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish."

Karate makes for interesting conversation
"You're limping!"
"Yes, I jammed my toes yesterday."
"How did you do that?"
"Kicking a girl."
"Not on purpose, I hope!"
"Well, I didn't jam my toes on purpose..."

That post
This is that post people make when they haven't been on livejournal much. It talks about how livejournal is an important part of life but the owner of this account just hasn't had the time and energy to keep up with it, neither on the reading nor writing end, and probably won't in the forseeable future, as life is overly serious, filled with strife, and entirely too busy. The account owner also mentions that his home phone will be disconnected soon so if you want to call him you'll have to use his cell phone, and if you don't have that number you should email him. And he hopes you are all doing well and having a happy start to 2007.

Bachelor food, birthdays
Microwave is on the fritz. For lunch:

Take one serving of leftover mashed potatoes and one serving of leftover buttered peas. Combine in a pot with 1 fresh jalapeno pepper from dad's gaden, chopped. Heat and serve with salt and pepper.

ETA: I have fallen down on the birthday wishes. Notably, I think, [info]ronebofh and [info]painkillerjane and others whose names flashed by recently... happy belated to you two and the rest of you!

Concert report & must be monday
There are lots of bands who can make it work in the studio but can't hack it on stage. Death Cab for Cutie is not one of them!

Went to a fantastic show at the Norva with [info]anann73 and [info]editgrrl ([info]admiralb was supposed to be there, too, but ended up having to work in NoVA). I am just impressed with DCFC to no end. The sound was mixed so it was loud enough without distortion--so, you know, you could hear all the instruments. And I guess they know their audience, as the only disappointment I had was the crowd which would sing and cheer wildly but refused to do anything during a song that might be confused with dancing. It was an older crowd, but as far as I can tell DCFC fans come from all walks of life; everybody was there from emo kids to older folks who didn't seem to be there with a kid. Which makes sense to me, because this stuff is quality--and lord knows quality doesn't have the mass appeal of, say, mass-produced crap.

And... crap. It's taken me all night to write this entry, because I found out this evening that one of our full-time faculty had quadruple bypass surgery this weekend. I got tapped to cover 3 (that's THREE, the cardinal number between two and four) of his ITN107/PC Hardware classes. First one's tomorrow night. Guess who needs to prepare? I did beg the boss to try and find someone for the 9am-12:30pm Friday class, as that will hurt pretty bad.

Whee. When I am king there shall no longer be Mondays. Tues-Fri and then the weekend for everyone. And if you miss the old calendar, well, it's the hyoooooooookah for you!

Hard-hitting political discussion from two sides of the aisle
flapperdoodle's new status message - Butter beans are evil. 8:22 PM

[info]omarius: Butter beans are AWESOME.

flapperdoodle: Butter beans are the seeds of death and the Republican Right!

[info]omarius: Butterbeans are the source of life and all warm fuzzies!

flapperdoodle: Exactly the type of thing that the GOP is trying to tell everyone. I have it on good authority that Hitler developed butterbeans to spread hate.

[info]omarius: That's left-wing propaganda. This country was founded by people who believed in Butterbeans. They ate Butterbeans whenever possible. America was founded upon the values of people who ate butterbeans.

flapperdoodle: This country was founded by the slaves forced to grow and harvest the blight that is butterbeans. Butterbeans are pro slavery.

[info]omarius: Butterbeans were introduced to us by the Native Americans who aided our founding colonists through their first hard winters in an alien land. They sustained those noble, straightforward people. If you hate butterbeans, you must hate both kinds of Americans.

flapperdoodle: The Native Americans gave the colonists the butterbeans because they thought the colonist would refuse them and starve or go back... and I quote, "Go back to their pastey faced island or die!" Butterbeans are an angry little legume of deception. They are the KKK of beans!

[info]omarius: Butterbeans are eaten as a fresh vegetable, but may also be dried as a pulse. If you have no pulse, you are dead. Anti-butterbeaners are pro-death! They want to eat our babies and stomp on our kittens! They want to break all the nitrogen in the soil--the very HomeLAND itself.

IHNJH, IJ want a band called "Angry Little Legumes of Deception."
