My brave boy [Feb. 13th, 2007|11:41 pm]

A week and a half ago my little 3 year old started walking hunched over in agony and only hours later after a trip to the hospital and then another trip in the ambulance to the Childrens Hospital he was having an emergency operation on his kidney. This came totally out of the blue and only the day before I had written my previous entry saying he was doing so well! He is going very well now, but we don't know what will happen with his kidney long term. He needs more surgery, as he has a tempory stent at the moment. He was very brave throughout all of this and I think he is amazing love him so much. Here he is, playing around and making us all laugh, like he always does! As a mother I have to say this is the hardest thing to go through, and I kept wishing it was me instead of him.  I appreciate everyone who has bought one of my little bears. Thank you.

Tiny crochet Teddies for Good Friday Appeal Royal Children's Hospital [Feb. 3rd, 2007|10:56 am]

Hello!

Three years ago, my youngest son Ewan had major kidney surgery at the Royal Children's hospital here in Melbourne. He was 5 weeks old, and it was a very scary and worrying time. He still has check up's there and will continue to be monitered. Thankfully, it looks like he won't need another operation, although one of his kidneys will always be in the wrong place down in his pelvis and retaining fluid. The hospital atmosphere and the friendly staff made our stay easier. Every year we donate money for the Good Friday Appeal www.goodfridayappeal.com.au This year, I have decided to make 20 little bears and donate the sale of them to the appeal. I am selling them for $15 (plus $3.50 postage) and so hopefully I can donate $300.

Here is Mitten with one of the bears. I have decided to make them on order, and it will take one week from the order date for me to make and send them. I have set up a new paypal address and will withdraw the money and donate it as soon as I have reached my goal. So, if anyone is interested you can email me mhhicks@iprimus.com.au or just send $18.50, or $23.50 for International orders to ohsewpretty@iprimus.com.au All prices Australian $ I can make any colour you like as I have lots of wool! Thank you,
Melissa

Grumpy Roly Poly's [Jan. 8th, 2007|09:40 pm]

I have been finding it incredibly hard to get anything done lately, so after having 10 little dolls with blank faces for a couple of weeks, I decided to give them a facial expression I have been doing everytime I think of all the things I need to do. Then my middle son started to giggle at them, and my eldest son started shouting 'Give them tears, they need tears!' and we all ended up laughing about them, which was what I REALLY needed to do.  The hair colours were partly inspired by a cousin, who reminds me of myself at 15 skulking with my dyed black hair and lipstick around outside the ANU bar*lol*

They are in my etsy shop http://www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com Thanks for looking, and Happy New Year to everyone!

Roly Poly's now in my etsy shop! [Nov. 26th, 2006|12:33 pm]
It has taken me weeks, but I have finally got 8 little roly poly russian dolls in my etsy shop. http://www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com

I have made a few batches lately for www.lilyandagathe.com and Romp in New York, but I haven't had them in my own shop for a long time. Sorry for the short post, I am currently doubled over in agony after eating what must have been bad satay at the Flemington Markets today. I have never had food poisoning before, but I think this is it. ouch! Stay away from satay!!

Easy Living Magazine [Nov. 21st, 2006|05:17 am]
I am very excited as I found out recently that a shop that sells my little dolls www.lilyandagathe.com sent some of my dolls to the UK magazine Easy Living and they have chosen to feature them in their December issue. They are in the gift guide section. I have not seen it myself in real life, but I have this scan. I feel so happy about this, and I see in Lily and Agathe they have sold all but one. Another lot is going to go on their way to France tomorrow. Here is a little picture

Teeny Tiny dolls and sock monkeys [Oct. 29th, 2006|02:24 am]

It has been so long since I updated! I have been very, very busy with 4 children, but I am finally getting more than a couple of hours sleep a day and feel so much better. I have even been able to make some new little crochet things. I have made mini Blythe size rag dolls and sock monkeys.

They are for sale at my etsy shop www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com

Sorry for the quickie post, but I have so much housework etc to do while Lola is having a nap ( I never know how long it will be, usually only 20 mins!!). Here is a little photo of Lola now 8 weeks. Very happy and talkative, cute and alert.

Crochet Today Magazine [Sep. 26th, 2006|11:09 am]

I am so excited as I have just received the Oct/Nov issure of Crochet Today Magaine by FedEx ( FedEx deliveries are exciting in themselves-makes me feel like Bobby Bowfinger).  They ahve the monkeys I designed. I like how they are photographed, but I think they should have flown me and my middle son over, don't you?? He is such a good mini model. I haven't read the magazine yet, might take me a while with Lola and the boys keeping me very busy. I see Jenny/Sew Darn Cute has a crochet hook cozy featured too- Yah!

Look at that tummy!

Lola Eloise Rose [Sep. 2nd, 2006|11:56 am]

Here is our new baby! She was 12 days late, and born on the 30th of August. We are all heed over heels for her and she is such a calm little girl. Lola has dark chocolate coloured hair and was 3.8 kilos/ 8 pounds 7.  After all the waiting she was born very quickly. I was only in labour for 3 hours, thankfully!  The boys are besotted with her and fighting over who gets to hold her.  I am very tired, but very excited!

Due date [Aug. 18th, 2006|03:40 pm]

Today is our official due date, but I have no signs of going into labour. It is a funny feeling because you count down to this day and then it is a bit of an anit climax!  I have a cold/cough at the moment so it is probably a good thing as I need to be able to breathe during labour.  I have relied on my breathing as a way of managing pain in the past, but I am trying not to think about that 'p' word at all! We all just want to hold our new family member and it is hard not to feel a bit impatient.

On a different note, these babushka bears are now at www.craftsburykids.com Cecilia who runs the shop is really lovely and was wonderful to deal with. It really does make a difference when you work with someone like that!

I only have 1 week until my due date now! I actually feel a lot better than I did in previous pregnanies and still sometimes forget I am pregnant at all! I suppose the other 3 keep me so busy. I just can't wait to see the new babies face. That is what I am really looking forward to.

There are some new arrivals here already Jack, Cindy and Pepper who are the last lot of little poodles. They are in my shop www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com more photos here www.flickr.com/photos/ohsewpretty  I wanted to try a red one and she reminds me of Mittens pup.

Maybe my next post will be THE post.....

Thank you Natascha! [Jul. 18th, 2006|08:50 pm]

I was so surprised and delighted to open the letterbox today and see a cute envelope with this picture on it

I knew straight away that it was from a special friend in Spain www.NataschaSRosenberg.com It contained pieces of fabric to make a fabric collage. I especially love the little silk screen printed cooking girl and utensils. Watch out for my collage which I plan to start tomorrow.

Stress and Sickness! [Jul. 4th, 2006|08:47 am]
Unfortunately these past couple of weeks have been full of sickness and stress! I now have only 6 weeks left until my due date so I am making a big effort to find time to relax and get as much rest as possible. My injury has healed a lot, but last week we all had a stomach virus which took a long time to get over. Anyway, on a positive note I have been doing little art projects with my sons and made my middle son a Robin cape as that is his latest obsession!

A few weeks ago we made these toys together. They are made by painting canvas with fabric paint, then cutting out the shape and backing it and stuffing it. I would strongly recommend not using joggle eyes because they are too tempting for young ones ( even 6 year olds) to pull off and our monsters now have no eyes at all!

Greta with my orange tree [Jun. 25th, 2006|12:55 pm]
Greta with my orange tree!

I am no gardener, but every winter we have an orange tree which grows lots of oranges. They are a bit bitter, but are at least grown naturally without any pesticides. I have recently finished this outfit and am very happy with how the hat came out. The jacket is from a dolly dolly pattern.

Congratulations Team Sibley! ( And some moof hats i made too) [Jun. 23rd, 2006|10:48 am]
bonnets

Congratulations to Team Sibley for winning the Blythe Beauty Contest!! I am so excited, although not a bit surprised!

Here are some Moof hats I made a couple of months ago, but hadn't gotten around to sewing the snap fasteners on. I am still in a lot of pain with my torn rib muscles and so I have made the most of it by finishing off projects and also starting on a new super exciting project.

Babushka Bears

Clover and Sofie for sale http://www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com

Earlier in the week I injured my upper abdominal muscles on my left side and after thinking for a second that I was in early labour I went to the doctor and was happily told that the baby is perfectly fine and I just have to rest and use heat packs to recover. It was from lifting my 4 year old, which I know I shouldn't be doing. Anyway while I have been propped up with cushions barely able to move I have made 6 little Babushka Bears. They are from left to right Cherry,Pippy,Sofie,Tweedy,Ducky and Clover. They are made in much the same way as I make the roly poly dolls, but they have felt faces and ears of course! I enjoyed choosing the little trims for their belts. They are mainly vintage trims that I have collected. I just love the little baby duck trim. It is the perfect size and very detailled. Some of them have a cheeky little tongue poking out too.

Incense and Peppermints [May. 28th, 2006|05:42 pm]
happy birthday to me

Here is my birthday present wearing a dress I made her. I was singing the song 'Incense and Peppermints' the whole time I made it. My husband loves 1960's psychedelic music. I first saw a TF6 at the last Blythe meet I went to way back in Februrary, and just loved her milky coffee eyes and shiny hair.

We have all been sick here with colds, and coughs which is just awful. I only have 10 weeks until my due date now!

P.S I bought her nude and if anyone has her tortoiseshell glasses and wishes to sell them pleeeease let me know!

Poodle Power! [May. 19th, 2006|03:43 pm]
I think this will be the last 'litter' of puppies for a while ( they take too long!). I think my favourite is Daphne because she is made from the most beautiful alpaca wool. It is pink with touches of deeper pink and white throughout. It only comes in pink and blue, but I think I will have a go at dying it because the texture is amazing.

They are all for sale at http://www.ohsewpretty.etsy.com except for the dark brown one which is already sold ( and a tribute to a real poodle!). And here is the obligatory photo of Celine with the pups!
