Re: Wonderfalls. Yes, I watched the premiere on Friday. Guess what? I felt it was funny as all possible hell. Yup, liked it a lot. It's not too genre-heavy — the mystical reason for the talking souveniers that haunt our heroine Jaye is still only loosely defined — but I understand that that will be developed more as the season progresses. Jaye herself is hilarious — cynical, bitter and generally biting. Of course, that also means she can occasionally come off as unlikable when she's snapping at everybody within arm's reach, but I guess the point of the premiere is to soften her, and it does well enough at that. But is she really going to seem "changed" next week? Doesn't look like it, not from those commercials.
So yeah, the show's already seeming funnier to my odd sense of humor than most things I've seen on TV, the way that the talking characters give her such vague clues that lead her to stumble her way through a series of chain reactions is pretty interesting to watch, and the characters we've met so far are pretty interesting... except for maybe that bartender, who's kind of bland.
But there's the rub. This show is described by the producers as being something of a [really weird] "romantic comedy" on television. Which makes me think it would be better for them to spice up that desperately stale genre of movie instead of doing it on TV, but I digress. The trouble is that I traditionally hate drawn-out TV romances. "Get it the fuck over with already, before I stop giving a shit!" is usually what I'm shouting, unless of course I don't like the pairing to being with, which is worse. Hopefully they'll make our male lead more interesting or likable soon, but we don't spend much time with him so I guess I won't worry about that overmuch. I'm just not really caring about sitting through multiple episodes of waiting for him and Jaye to get together. That kind of thing pisses me off. I've given up on shows for this reason before. More than one show, even.
So, here are the concerns for now: Number A, the drawn-out romance and all the potential obnoxious annoyances therein. Number B, the fact that this is not really much of an arc-heavy show (yet), nor does it provide much "adventure" as it were, so I have to try to stay attached to what is by and large a comedy. This could be difficult and may lead me to give up on it within a few weeks, but it's too early to tell now. And Number C, Jaye is so mean that it makes me explode with laughter, but also makes me wonder if I should be rooting for her, which is a difficult balance. I want to laugh but also to like our girl.
Right now I feel pretty high on the show, though. The premiere was fairly rockin' and I just hope that subsequent episodes continue the streak and keep on bringing me the funny. The commercial for the second episode already has me laughing out loud.
So here's the deal — the premiere episode is rerunning this Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Fox. Then, on Friday, the second episode will run. Same time. Different day. Check it out. Or don't.
