QotD (the Sordid Finale of Crackergate)

Nothing must be held sacred. Question everything. God is not great, Jesus is not your lord, you are not disciples of any charismatic prophet. You are all human beings who must make your way through your life by thinking and learning, and you have the job of advancing humanity's knowledge by winnowing out the errors of past generations and finding deeper understanding of reality. You will not find wisdom in rituals and sacraments and dogma, which build only self-satisfied ignorance, but you can find truth by looking at your world with fresh eyes and a questioning mind.

--PZ Myers (in the post "The Great Desecration")

For those of you who remember my mention of it before, here is PZ's promised desecration of a communion wafer (with pages from the Qur'an and The God Delusion thrown in for good measure):

The Local Bionic Arm Maker

Cool!

I just found out (from an article on bangordailynews.com) that Touch Bionics, maker of the worlds first fully articulating and commercially available bionic hand, has a location in Watertown, NY (a bit more than 20 miles from where I live-- although I believe they're based in the UK)*. From the Touch Bionics website:

The i-LIMB Hand

The worlds first fully articulating and commercially available bionic hand.

Touch Bionics is a leading developer of advanced upper-limb prosthetics (ULP). One of the two products now commercially available from the company, the i-LIMB Hand, is a first-to-market prosthetic device with five individually powered digits. This replacement hand looks and acts like a real human hand and represents a generational advance in bionics and patient care.

The Touch Bionics i-LIMB Hand was developed using leading-edge mechanical engineering techniques and is manufactured using high-strength plastics. The result is a next-generation prosthetic device that is lightweight, robust and highly appealing to both patients and healthcare professionals.

The i-LIMB Hand is controlled by a unique, highly intuitive control system that uses a traditional two-input myoelectric (muscle signal) to open and close the hand’s life-like fingers. Myoelectric controls utilize the electrical signal generated by the muscles in the remaining portion of the patient’s limb. This signal is picked up by electrodes that sit on the surface of the skin. Existing users of basic myoelectric prosthetic hands are able to quickly adapt to the system and can master the device’s new functionality within minutes. For new patients, the i-LIMB Hand offers a prosthetic solution that has never before been available...

<lj-embed id="68" />

*I'm relying on this article as the sole source referring to the Watertown location, as I can't seem to find any confirmation of it.

Je vraiment déteste le chanson "vin rouge rouge"

Is there a word that's like reverse nostalgia, indicating rather an apathy about a past circumstance?

I ask because my twenty-year (high school) class reunion is this approaching weekend and, well, I just don't care. I'm "friends" on Facebook with some of my former classmates, so I have enough information on their current circumstances to satisfy my curiosity. As for the one or two I have no contact with whom I actually care about, I have reason to believe that they will not be attending either. So I can't see any purpose in going.

I rarely talked to any of these people back in the festive 80s when I saw them everyday, so why should being out of touch for a few decades suddenly make them more interesting or appealing? Or, vice versa, why should they care what I'm doing now when they didn't then? Add to this the fact that I hate parties; attempting to interact with large groups of people does not agree with me. I think staying home and doing schoolwork is a far more pleasant option.

But just to show I am not completely nostalgia-free, here's a meme (via suddenlynaked) about the music from when I graduated:

Go to musicoutfitters.com
- Search on the year you graduated from high school and get the list of 100 most popular songs of that year
- Bold the songs you like
- Italicize the songs you liked then, but don't now (I also included the ones that are kinda "eh" now...)
- Strike through the ones you hate (I included "didn't like", or "meh", because I don't really hate most of these-- except "Red Red Wine" by UB40)
- Underline your favorites.
- Do nothing to the ones you don't remember.

Top 100 Hits of 1988/Top 100 Songs of 1988

1. Faith, George Michael
2. Need You Tonight, INXS
3. <strike>Got My Mind Set On You, George Harrison</strike>
4. Never Gonna Give You Up, Rick Astley
5. Sweet Child O' Mine, Guns N' Roses
6. <strike>So Emotional, Whitney Houston</strike>
7. Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Belinda Carlisle
8. Could've Been, Tiffany
9. Hands To Heaven, Breathe
10. Roll With It, Steve Winwood
11. One More Try, George Michael
12. Wishing Well, Terence Trent d'Arby
13. <strike>Anything For You, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine</strike>
14. The Flame, Cheap Trick
15. <strike>Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car, Billy Ocean</strike>
16. Seasons Change, Expose
17. Is This Love, Whitesnake
18. Wild, Wild West, Escape Club
19. Pour Some Sugar On Me, Def Leppard
20.
QotD

(Via Greg Mankiw)

If MoveOn and Barack Obama really were going to bravely confront America with hard, necessary truths, they'd tell us how great $4 gas has been for us. With public transit use nationally at a 50-year high, traffic dropped 2.1% in the first four months of this year across the country. That mileage reduction -- along with people driving smaller cars, and more slowly, to save gas -- could mean that 12,000 fewer people will die in traffic accidents this year, according to a study by professors Michael Morrisey at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and David C. Grabowski at Harvard Medical School. Air pollution has been reduced enough, according to UC Davis economics professor J. Paul Leigh, to prevent 2,200 respiratory-related deaths over the last year. Less eating out and more walking and biking could mean a 10% reduction in obesity, according to Charles Courtemanche, an assistant economics professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. And, apparently, higher gas prices also keep econ professors employed.

--Joel Stein, "The Joy of $8 Gas"

Obama's Reasons for Supporting the FISA Amendments Act of 2008

Barack Obama disappointed a lot of people when he voted for the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. I emailed his campaign about this, and they emailed back a statement from Mr Obama on why he voted for the bill.

Here is the text of Mr Obama's response:

Given the grave threats that we face, our national security agencies
must have the capability to gather intelligence and track down terrorists
before they strike, while respecting the rule of law and the privacy
and civil liberties of the American people. There is also little doubt
that the Bush Administration, with the cooperation of major
telecommunications companies, has abused that authority and undermined the
Constitution by intercepting the communications of innocent Americans without
their knowledge or the required court orders.

That is why last year I opposed the so-called Protect America Act,
which expanded the surveillance powers of the government without sufficient
independent oversight to protect the privacy and civil liberties of
innocent Americans. I have also opposed the granting of retroactive
immunity to those who were allegedly complicit in acts of illegal spying in
the past.

After months of negotiation, the House passed a compromise that, while
far from perfect, is a marked improvement over last year's Protect
America Act. Under this compromise legislation, an important tool in the
fight against terrorism will continue, but the President's illegal
program of warrantless surveillance will be over. It restores FISA and
existing criminal wiretap statutes as the exclusive means to conduct
surveillance - making it clear that the President cannot circumvent the law
and disregard the civil liberties of the American people. It also firmly
re-establishes basic judicial oversight over all domestic surveillance
in the future.

It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I voted in the Senate
three times to remove this provision so that we could seek full
accountability for past offenses. Unfortunately, these attempts were
unsuccessful. But this compromise guarantees a thorough review by the
Inspectors General of our national security agencies to determine what took
place in the past, and ensures that there will be accountability going
forward. By demanding oversight and accountability, a grassroots movement
of Americans has helped yield a bill that is far better than the
Protect America Act.

It is not all that I would want. But given the legitimate threats we
face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate
safeguards is too important to delay. So I support the compromise, but
do so with a firm pledge that as President, I will carefully monitor
the program, review the report by the Inspectors General, and work with
the Congress to take any additional steps I deem necessary to protect
the lives - and the liberty - of the American people.

I decided to map out his argument for supporting the bill. Parts of the response weren't relevant to this, like the part about the Bush administration abusing their authority-- not that this isn't true, only that it is irrelevant to whether Obama should have voted for this bill and is basically included to draw a contrast between Mr Obama and the President. Here's what I came up with:

As might be expected in an argument for something, there's a lot of green (premises) and only a little red (objections). Mr Obama has presented a rational case, but are the premises true and do they support the conclusion? What objections (or other premises) might Mr Obama be leaving out? I'm going to look at the argument more in upcoming posts, but I'd be interested to see what everyone has to say so please do comment if you're so inclined.

"When you drink from the St. Lawrence, you're drinking sewer sludge from Chicago, Detroit, Toronto and Ottawa. Mr Lavictoire is probably exaggerating for comic effect.

Surfing the St Lawrence

It seems that downriver on the mighty waterway that churns outside my back door*, there's surfin' goin' on:

Everybody's Gone Surfin' on the St. Lawrence River

Through a quirk of nature, rapids on the St. Lawrence river near Montreal hit underwater boulders, creating a two-metre high, jade-green wave that rises into a permanent curl. That has helped develop a growing subculture of Montreal river surfers, riding what is -- literally -- an endless wave.

Corran Addison has surfed the world's best beaches. So when the bronzed and sun-bleached South African says Montreal is his new surfing fix of choice, you think he's joking.

"I'm dead serious," Addison, 36 said. "The wave is spectacular, challenging, some of the best surfing you'll find."

It seems that underwater rock formations interact with the flowing river to create an everlasting wave; everlasting, that is, as long as the river is high enough. During drier times, there isn't sufficient flow to sustain the formation, leaving the shores full of pouting Québécois surfers. Nonetheless, flow is sufficient that Montreal is developing its own surfing culture, despite a lack of beaches:

Montreal surfers must scramble down a steep and muddy river bank to reach the water. Once in, they paddle from the eddy into the gathering current, looking for all the world like awkward turtles. Nearing the whitewater, they flip around, letting the current pull them backward toward the curl. They paddle like crazy and, if they're good or lucky, they'll catch the wave and ride it.

If not, they're carried over the crest and swept downriver, their frustrated cries of "Oh fffffuuuuuuuuu" receding with them as they disappear.

(*Okay, technically we don't have a back door, but you get the picture, right?)

Political Article Hat Trick

I haven't had much to say on the political front since the winners emerged from the primaries, so I thought I would pass along this trio of offerings from the Brookings Institution that I found interesting. There are parts that I'm sure some of you would find disagreeable; feel free to discuss here, or not, as suits you.

Life Is Good, So Why Do We Feel So Bad?

When asked about the country's economy, schools, health care or community spirit, Americans tell pollsters the situation is dreadful. But when asked about their own jobs, schools, doctors and communities, people tell pollsters the situation is good. Our impressions of ourselves and our neighbors come from personal experience. Our impressions of the nation as a whole come from the media and from political blather, which both exaggerate the negative...

Gay Marriage Is Good for America

Imagine that in the law's eyes you and your soul mate will never be more than acquaintances. And now add even more strangeness. Imagine coming of age into a whole community, a whole culture, without marriage and the bonds of mutuality and kinship that go with it...

Is Obama the New Reagan?

Many Democrats underestimated Reagan because of his inexperience, ardent ideology, and lofty but sometimes vague rhetoric. Yet the former Hollywood actor and California governor surprised opponents by leading a revolution in domestic and foreign policy... Obama has the same capacity as Reagan to produce surprising changes, albeit with different policy objectives than Reagan...

Stop with the Quizzes Already! Yeesh!

After that last quiz, this one was a moral imperative. The latest in a long line of Belief-O-Matics:

Your Results:

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs.
