Jill Sobule - concert 2008.15
Last night, [info]simoniff and I saw Jill Sobule Upstairs at the World Cafe. It was always a fun time at a Jill show. All of her songs tell little stories. You can spot the people less familiar with her songs by the hardy laughter, while the rest of us just chuckle.

Apparently it was originally scheduled to be a Mary Kate O'Neil gig for her new album, and Jill was going to appear. But somehow it morphed into a Jill should where O'Neil opened for her. O'Neil had 4 guys backing her up, guitars, drum and keyboard. She was pleasant enough, but not gripping, so she didn't make any sales to me - and from what I saw more people were in line after the show for Sobule merch than hers.

Naturally Jill played some tunes from her next album, like "Nothing to Prove". Although she played most of the gig alone, she ended by grabbing O'Neil's band and rocking out with "Ship Comes In".

TV addict
How do I know that I'm a TV addict? I'm sad that I can start watching the Season 5 Wire episodes that just arrived because I have to pack, then go watch a live concert.

Many trips
Today I went to the Physical Therapist, she pulled up my MRI and said there was no tear - but that my neck and shoulder are very tight with a little tendinitis. So I'll be working that out with them.

Then I went over to [info]kemidra's to talk about how to resurrect my desktop with her man. The drive into Philly was very frustrating, I usually avoid bad traffic.

I got to the Y just at 6 ($15 parking at the lot nearby!) I had enough time to say "Hi" to [info]anerda, buy the new book, wonder if [info]kylecassidy would remember me if I said hi, and give Cat a hug before the show started.

Neil got introduced by the ghost of Vincent Price, started reading Chapter 2 of the Graveyard Book. Shortly before he was done, I ran out and went to rehearsal. So I missed the new Coraline trailer and the Q&A.

However, I didn't miss the signing because there wasn't one. Mr. Gaiman's broke his finger in China, so rather than doing a long signing, he used it as an excuse to arrive with signed books for sale.

Muppets
According to the Smithsonian the Henson exhibit is only there until this weekend. But it will be in Doylestown 9/5/2009-11/29/2009.

So all we need is patience.

Neil Gaiman in town
I can't stick around for the signing, but I figured I'd hear the talk.

The Graveyard Book
This chilling tale is Neil Gaiman's first full-length novel for middle-grade readers since the internationally bestselling and universally acclaimed Coraline. Like Coraline, this book is sure to enchant and surprise young readers as well as Neil Gaiman's legion of adult fans. The event is free and open to the public, no tickets are needed. Pre-signed books will be available for purchase.

Ben Arnold - concert 2008.14
Yesterday, I let my anal retentive nature kick in and went out to maintain my resolution to go to a live concert every month.

Ben Arnold has never been my favorite artist, but he's a good local guy, so I decided to head out to Puck Live last night and hear him. His voice sounds a lot like Randy Newman but he isn't as funny.

However, in my tradition of actually listening to opening acts, I came home with a CD for Mark Geary. He was originally from Dublin, but now is in NYC (I think). His lyrics were interesting enough that I wanted to hear them again, and his guitar work was pretty good. The $10 Radio Shack fuzz box turned his acoustic guitar into an electric noise maker, at just the right places. Geary's more expensive looping system allowed him to layer his guitar in multi-loops and provide a cool background for his voice. Geary didn't do it quite as well as I remember Cardiff doing it, but it was sweet.

Concert?
Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet (including Bela Fleck) are playing in Harrisburg tonight.

Google maps says it is a 2 hour drive, but the concert is at 7:30 so that would be rush hour...

I think that may be to long of a frustrating drive.

Weekend and future
Well, I've rapped up 4 performances of a broad conceptual experiment, where the audience got lost in the spectacle.

However, I realized that by worrying about the show, I haven't been looking at finding a September concert to attend. I'll have to figure out what to do about that.

According to the programming guide, Pink Floyd's The Wall is a documentary.

Someone opened a restaurant called Pandora's Lunch Box. I would have told them it was a bad idea, but at least they still have hope.

You can tell when college classes start by seeing the number of new people that show up at Bikram.

I have an interview on Thursday.

Although I'm in the fringe, I haven't made it to any fringe shows.
