That uppity Obama again [Sep. 8th, 2008|02:15 am]
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, R-GA: “Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said, according to The Hill, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill.

When asked to clarify, Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.” (AJC)

Westmoreland later claimed that he had never heard the word with any racial overtones. I call bullshit. I don't recall once hearing "uppity" without the N-word expressed or clearly implied.

Remember, folks, you heard it here first.

Do YOU know Jesus? [Sep. 6th, 2008|01:07 pm]
[mood |satirical]

NABLUS, West Bank -- Israeli archaeologists revealed Thursday that they have uncovered traces of the first known negative campaign in history. The ads, believed to be the work of Karolus Rovius, date to approximately 3 B.C.E. The first of the ads has been released below, with others to follow as they are translated, a spokesman for the team said.

My new favorite tie [Sep. 1st, 2008|01:58 pm]
[mood |trés chic]

Have you ever been in a thrift shop and seen something so tacky you said to yourself, My God, I must have that now?

The thing is, other than the obvious taste issues surrounding a purple panda tie, it's really nice work -- the silk screening is excellent, and the fabric has a watermark of different endangered species. It's in near-pristine condition, as if the previous owner rarely wore it for some bizarre reason.

Now I need an excuse to wear it. I don't think a job interview is the right occasion. On the other hand, if I get hired wearing that, I'll know I've found my people.

Electorate, don't preach [Sep. 1st, 2008|01:15 pm]

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior aide to Sen. John McCain confirmed to CNN Tuesday.

This is not related to the circulating Palin/pregancy rumor. At least not directly. No, this is confirmed by the campaign.

Insert unflattering comparison between the Palin family and the Spears family here.

Hat tip to Elizabeth G. in another forum.

Let me get this straight [Aug. 29th, 2008|11:53 am]
U.S. Senator (four years), state legislator, community activist = dangerously unprepared.

Alaska governor (two years), small-town mayor, runner-up for Miss Alaska = ready from day one.

But, really, the VP pick isn't all that important. I mean, it's not like 75-year-old men with high blood pressure and a history of cancer just up and die.

ETA: Can we settle on one pronunciation of this woman's name, please? In the last couple of hours, I've heard PAY•lin (like the Monty Python guy), PAHL•lin (like Paul Lynde), and PALL•lin (like pallid).

Peanut-boy for the win [Aug. 29th, 2008|10:04 am]

DENVER — Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a "distinguished naval officer," but he said the Arizona senator has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

An angry McCain shot back, "Milking? I suppose farm boy knows all about milking. My friends, I didn't have any milk when I was in a Viet Cong prison for five years."

What the ...? They call that television? How am I supposed to get any information out of some old broad talking? Where's the crawl? Where are the info boxes? Where are the talking heads? Where are the inane factoids?

DNC, Night 1 [Aug. 26th, 2008|10:03 am]
On my earlier "one nation" bit, they really should have labeled this evening "we are family." Yes, it's cheesy, but the slate is Jesse Jackson's son, JFK's daughter and brother, and Barack Obama's wife as the headliner.

Ted Kennedy. Just. Damn. He brought it like a guy who didn't have his skull cut open a couple of months ago.

The Ken Burns video tribute felt a lot like a eulogy (jeez, can't we let the dude out of his brothers' shadow for one night?), but Ted let it be known he isn't done quite yet. Still, all his calls to action had an almost-audible "... one last time" after them.

I'm sure that being Jesse Jackson Junior is both a blessing and a curse, but I'm not sure in what proportions. It was a solid speech, but he lacks his daddy's fire. The "common ground" reference was a nice touch.

I skipped Nancy Pelosi's speech, because, well, I can.

Former Rep. Jim Leach is no firestarter, but that's really not the point. Having a Republican on the podium takes some of the wind out of Lieberman's sails next week.

I sacked out early and missed most of Michelle Obama's speech, but some pundits are already talking dynasty. Jesus Horatio Christ on rye, we just knocked the Clintons out of the running and we're about to bury the Bushes, and they're already starting in with that shit?

I think I'm going to have "Won't Get Fooled Again" on a tape loop in my head for the next nine or ten days. Or maybe the next two months.

Tonight's theme at the DNC is "One Nation." Two thoughts:

1) Someone please tell me I'm not the only person whose brane finished the phrase with "under a groove."

B) How long before someone on the Right starts wailing about the omission of "under God"? Limbaugh's show goes on in half an hour, so I give it 40 minutes.

We has dem ticket! [Aug. 23rd, 2008|02:31 am]
Let me be the first to say that Obama-Biden sounds like a prescription medication. "Mr. Notgruntled, your condition is improving, so you don't need to keep taking the amoxflomycin. But I want you to keep taking the Obamabiden."

Obama didn't choose Virginia governor Tim Kaine, so he's available for the other side. It'll never happen, but I like the sound of McCain-Kaine.

My latest theory [Aug. 17th, 2008|07:52 am]
Michael Phelps is not human. He is, in fact, an advance scout from Planet 12 whose mission is to pave the way for an invasion by impregnating young starlets. His mission is a follow-up to the first Twelvian scout, Lance Armstrong.

A few months from now, when Phelps is dating an Olsen twin, remember you read it here first.

When nostalgia goes too far [Aug. 12th, 2008|12:17 pm]
I've learned to tolerate the relentless '80s music, and if Dexy's Midnight Runners came to Atlanta, I might even buy a ticket. I've learned to cope with the fact that there will be an A-Team movie and a new Knight Rider series. When jellies appeared on store shelves again, I faced it stoically.

But I need to have a few words with the son of a bitch who gave the green light to the Soviet Union Reunion Tour.

Mental image OTD [Aug. 8th, 2008|11:33 am]
When I see headlines about Russians invading Georgia, I just can't shake the mental image of a bunch of our local crackers grabbing all their guns and running toward either Augusta or Columbus. That's probably why CNN is calling it "the former Soviet republic of Georgia" on first reference, just to avoid confusion.

But hey, the good news is that Our Only President has an opportunity to commit another of the Classic Blunders: We're tied up in not one but two land wars in Asia, and now we can get involved in one in the Caucasus. Iran will just have to take a number.

TV followup [Aug. 5th, 2008|10:38 pm]
It looks like the problem is the inverter board. It's pictured at right. The object in the picture for scale is my head.

The board is about $200. A replacement transformer is about $20, if I can figure out which one's bad and if I can solder on a new one without burning the whole thing up. Grrr.

So now I have a 13" TV in the living room, a trophy for my mad bowling skillz that used to be in the bedroom. It looks sad and lonely, propped up with scrap lumber in the big empty shelf.

A warning to all: Do not buy a Syntax TV. Inverter boards that fail after 2-3 years are apparently a common problem with them, and repair shops can't get replacement parts. I didn't see a lot of people on the Internets who were happy with their purchase a few years out.

TV repair [Aug. 5th, 2008|02:13 pm]
[mood | annoyed]

My LCD TV (30" Oleiva Syntax, five or six years old) has up and died on me. There was a loud pop, and the screen went black. The LED that indicates power turns on and off with the remote, but the screen shows no signs of life.

Anyone know what that's likely to be, or if it's likely to be repairable?

Edit: Norman's, the go-to electronic repair guys in town, say they have little luck getting parts for Syntax, and that a repair will run $300-400 and up. For that, I can just about replace it with a newer unit with a warranty.
