Chapter 4, pages 42, 43, 44 | 7 new fanart | 20 new fan icons
Um, hi. So. The way my life has been lately, I've found it easier to work on the comic when I think of it as something I do purely for my own enjoyment, without pressure to meet expectations. Unfortunately, this means that I've been neglecting you guys in terms of emails and posts, to say nothing of new pages. I'm very sorry about that. I apologize to anyone who might have worried I was lying in a ditch somewhere having my face chewed off by monitor lizards, and I'm deeply grateful to everyone for their patience and understanding these past months. It continually amazes me that even during the long dry spells people still think of the comic enough to send me emails and make fanworks, as evidenced by the gorgeous new pieces added to the gallery.
So, anyway, go read the new pages, and I promise that the next set will not take another three months. ^^;; To keep track of updates, as always, there's the mailing list or the Livejournal feed, which doubles as an RSS feed.
Oh, and I'm afraid I've decided to take down the shoutbox. For comments and discussion, there's still the forum; or, you can leave comments on the LJ. |

Chapter 4, pages 40 and 41 Please imagine that November fixed her hair at some point between pages 40 and 41. I have to learn to resist temptation to make her hair a complete mess by chapter's end. And at some point I'm going to have to go back and fix every single panel in this chapter where I forgot to draw the bandages on November or Red's hands.
Fans of Golden should be happy to know that, after a long dry spell, there have been a couple of new pages recently! They should also take note that it's moved to a new site. |

Chapter 4, pages 38 and 39
I'm not too satisfied with these pages, but I don't think fiddling with them is going to make them any better, so... >_<
Um, let's see... Richard Pulfer at Broken Frontier did a short interview-type-thing with me here. And in somewhat less shocking news, November has been spotted among the shambling undead. |

Chapter 4, pages 36 and 37 Okay, I thought setting a date for the update ahead of time would help me avoid stupid delays. Apparently not! Never mind then. Updates are still every ten-ish days.
No matter how neat November's hair is at the beginning of the chapter, it always seems to be a mess by the end of the chapter. |

Sorry, not much dialogue. Not much to say here, either. :/ Next update will be Thursday, Feb. 14. |

Chapter 4, pages 32 and 33 | fan cosplay | fan dolls | fan wallpaper | extras
I think I've finally cleared the backlog of fanworks to post. Sorry to those who had to wait a really long time. I've also finally added links in the Extras section to Bearskin and Snow White and Rose Red.
These flashback pages are being drawn with a different brush pen than I used to ink the first part of the flashback; I think they came out closer to the look I was trying to achieve. It's actually kind of fun inking this way, but it's pretty sloppy. This should be the last Red flashback for a while, so I don't know when I'll be able to practice this style again. :P |

Chapter 4, pages 30 and 31.
I seem to be averaging two pages every ten days. That's... sort of better than one page a week, isn't it?
It's that time of the year -- the Webcartoonists' Choice Awards have started up again. Consider this a public service announcement for those who would like to nominate/vote but never even hear that the awards are open until it's too late. Knowing is half the battle! I don't think No Rest has a chance this year since there are a lot fewer categories (they eliminated "Outstanding Fantasy", for one). But it's still pretty difficult for me to believe that I won at all last year, so that's fine! |

Chapter 4, pages 28 and 29
I managed to Macgyver up a way to keep on using the old scanner, so I can continue being a cheapskate for a while longer! Hurray.
It's almost New Year. My resolutions for the comic this year are:
- Finish the site redesign
- Finish putting together the print book
- Bring it up to two pages a week
Erk. I don't blame you for being skeptical; but I figure I should be able to pull off at least two out of three. |

So... remember when I mentioned that I had a new computer that refused to recognize my scanner? When I checked the HP website for support, it basically just said, "time to buy a new scanner, sucker!" As you can imagine, I was pretty disgusted with that prospect, when the old one was still working fine. So I attached the scanner to a different computer, used that to scan, and transferred the files to my computer for photoshopping. Well, as of last night the computer I was using for scanning is refusing to boot up. So... to make a long story short, the two pages I had ready to scan and was hoping to put up before Christmas are not going to be up. Not until this scanner issue is taken care of; hopefully before the new year. Sorry about that. -__-
That aside, I would like to take this time to wish everyone reading a warm and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and just plain good times all around. And while I wasn't able to draw a card this year, please accept this as a token of my affection and ability to find dorky things on the internet. |

Chapter 4, page 27 // 4 new fanart
I have several more fanworks to post; but I'm afraid I have to put those off until the next update. I still haven't found a good substitute for Dreamweaver on this new computer, so editing html is still a slow and tedious process. Sorry! |

[Nov. 29th, 2007|03:29 pm] |
25 . 26
I've noticed a lot of activity in the shoutbox lately. This is great, except that a lot of people seem to be using it as a place for extended discussions, which would be much better off in the forum (since it's, you know, actually designed for discussion). Seriously, the forum is a cool place! Also, way too many people in the shoutbox neglect to enter a name/nickname, and just post as 'Guest', which gets extremely confusing. Either that, or one person named 'Guest' has been very talkative.
There are a bunch of new fanworks I need to add; I'll put them up with next week's update. Hmm... I probably need to update the bibliography as well. |

[Nov. 20th, 2007|08:32 am] |
So here I am again. I would say sorry for the lapse in updates, but it was quite necessary. Thanks for your understanding. I realize that schedule problems have turned a lot of people off this comic, and I can't blame them; but to those who continue to stick around, I'm very grateful.
Further complications include the fact that I've had to get a new computer which, while shiny, lacks Dreamweaver and refuses to give my scanner the time of day. So I have to scan on a different computer, and type up all of this update in Notepad.
Anyway! A lot of you should be familiar with the works of Faith Hicks, of Ice and the late, great Demonology 101. (Way back when this comic was just starting out, I think almost everyone who read it found it through her links.) Well, she has a graphic novel out in print now, called Zombies Calling. It is all about being a young person facing all the difficulties and challenges of shambling undead hordes. I, for one, can't wait to read it! Faith has been working on the story for a while now, and her stuff just keeps getting better and better. The Zombies Calling page has all the links to where you can read previews, order the book on Amazon, etc. |

And so we finally learn about Clare's sordid criminal career!
Sorry about the delay, though I guess you're all probably used to it by now. D: Some pretty serious family stuff came up last week, which made it difficult for me to work on comic pages. I'm not taking a break or anything; this is just to let you know that it might be a little while longer yet before I can get the comic back to a nice regular schedule. Again, I guess you're all pretty used to that by now! |

Did I mention that this chapter has a lot of flashbacks? This chapter has a lot of flashbacks. But I don't think there's been a chapter so far that hasn't had a lot of flashbacks. Maybe someday I need to learn to tell a story without ten billion flashbacks.
I just noticed now that the last time I updated I left the date as "Oct. 4" when it should have said "Oct. 9". Just another reason why I need to revamp this site with some kind of script or something that doesn't require me manually changing the dates and coding all the html every single time. If I could just get wordpress or something running on the front page, that would be great, but I've also been thinking of maybe switching the comic archives to some kind of automated script. Any php wizards out there willing to give me some advice? |

One or two people already guessed the story this character comes from, so you can go ahead and pat yourselves on the back now. This page turned out a lot sillier-looking than I had originally planned. I guess it's interesting that Red seems to handle bears the way most people handle cockroaches.
I'll probably try to update again around Friday. I have a few emails I'm behind in answering. And, um, I updated the vote incentive pictures again. |

And then, everyone got eaten by bears. The end!
It concerns me that I seem to be averaging 10 days between updates these days. Next week I'm going to aim for two updates.
Also, I seem to have installed an oekaki board for some mysterious reason. Doubtless this will all end in tears. |

I can't really think of a clever way to announce this, so... Sugary Serials is an upcoming web/print comic anthology with a "Saturday morning cartoon" feel. I'm collaborating on one of the titles with Jerzy Drozd (who does The Front) -- I'll be doing the art. It's an exciting project, and there are a lot of other cool-looking titles, so go check it out! |

I couldn't decide whether I should shade this sequence with the same airbrushy style I used for the flashback in Chapter 2, or with the style I've been using for flashbacks since Chapter 3. In the end, I tried to sort of combine them.
Thank you for all the votes last week. I've put up new vote incentive pics again; dunno how long I'll be able to keep that up weekly, but we'll see. By the way, I always put up a different incentive for TWC and Buzz; so if you've only been checking one or the other, you've been missing out. ^^; |

I smell flashback! Next week I want to put up two pages; but they're probably going to be difficult to finish, so I'm not going to set the specific update day beyond "sometime next week".
Also, I haven't been updating the vote incentive pictures, mostly because I felt bad asking people for votes when my updates have been so spotty; but then I still end up feeling bad because people keep voting anyway and seeing the same stale incentives for months on end. So, uh, anyway, I've updated the vote incentives on TWC and Buzz. ^^ I got some new markers a few months ago and I've been having fun playing with them. |
