Is there such a thing as "reader's block"?

It's been weeks since I've been able to sit down and read, or to lie in bed and read.

No clue as to the cause, but it isn't just due to time constraints.

Ever found an extended period in which you just *didn't* read, Gentle Readers?

We're just getting into the thick of the action in Bram Stoker's DRACULA. There are going to be some days coming up that have between five and ten "entries" each day, which might prove annoying for some of my Gentle Readers.

[For those unfamiliar with the novel, it runs in epistolary form from the first week of May through the first week in November. September is the densest month, entry-wise... October has quiet stretches until its climactic final days.]

So the time has come to ask this question.

Dr Seward's Diary

7 September. – The first thing Van Helsing said to me when we met at Liverpool Street was:-

"Have you said anything to our young friend, the lover of her?"

"No," I said. "I waited till I had seen you, as I said in my telegram. I wrote him a letter simply telling him that you were coming, as Miss Westenra was not so well, and that I should let him know if need be."

"Right, my friend," he said, "quite right! Better he not know as yet; perhaps he will never know... )

My dear Art,

My news today is not so good. Lucy this morning had gone back a bit. There is, however, one good thing which has arisen from it... )

I don't have quite enough for an Anti-Apollyon Diaries post, but in support of Drama Free Thursday it's time to put up in this space besides DRACULA. [Not that I'm tiring of DRACULA, mind you; now that Van Helsing's in the picture the action's going to be roller-coastery all through September.]

* Welcome to new Gentle Readers [info]girlyengine, [info]novelfriend, and [info]zoethe.

* New entries at [info]mikescomics.

* My porch is gradually becoming TARDIS-blue in color. We hadn't intended it as such, but it's a nice benefit.

* I spent yesterday applying for various jobs, full- and part-time. If any of my Gentle Readers in Wormtown and its surrounding towns know of any clerical openings, I'd love some leads, because the agency for whom I was dubbed their best ever "Super-Temp" has closed and can no longer place me. I am limited to those jobs accessible by public transportation, either the RTA or the commuter rail and T. [I'm a non-driver.]

* Chicken was on sale this week, so we have a whole flock in the fridge. I am making crockpot chicken soup today, and we've refilled our propane tank, so tomorrow we shall grill.

* I expect to be doing [info]therealljidol this time around when it starts in the next few days/weeks. I need to flex my essay-muscles, and if there's anything this blog has been missing, it's anecdotes, if my tag-use statistics are to be believed. I try my best not to be a drama-llama, so it will be amusing to see if my Teflon coating is as good as I think it is, since it will need to stand up to others who try to make drama where there is none.

* A kiss and a cuddle to my dear [info]wyldemusick... we finished DW Series Three last night. Our thanks to you for providing it to us.

Letter, Dr Seward to Hon. Arthur Holmwood

3 September

My dear Art, -

Van Helsing has come and gone. He came on with me to Hillingham, and found that, by Lucy's discretion, her mother was lunching out, so that we were alone with her. Van Helsing made a very careful examination of the patient. He is to report to me, and I shall advise you... )

Letter from Dr Seward to Arthur Holmwood

2 September

My dear old fellow, -

With regard to Miss Westenra's health I hasten to let you know at once that in my opinion there is not any functional disturbance or any malady that I know of. At the same time, I am not by any means satisfied with her appearance; she is woefully different from what she was when I saw her last. Of course you must bear in mind that I did not have full opportunity of examination such as I should wish; our very friendship makes a little difficulty which not even medical science or custom can bridge over. I had better tell you exactly what happened, leaving you to draw, in a measure, your own conclusions... )

Well, less of a report, and more a sequence of random impressions, which will hopefully be easy to group into a con timeline.

Michael drove one vehicle full of stuph, and I rode there and back again with Mario di Giacomo - [info]mdg1 - and availed myself of his services as table help. We've known each other online since 2002 and in meatspace since 2004; we've attended cons together, but this is the first time we've actually worked a table setup together. The results were very positive, and we shall likely repeat the experiment in future, as he has continued to prove himself a fine boon companion.

I did have a nice time all in all. Any delay in writing up this con report has been because of life on this end, not due to reticence.
