New LiveJournal Client for Windows
After a long wait, there is finally a new version of the windows LiveJournal client available at http://www.livejournal.com/download/.

There are tons of added features as well as bug fixes and cosmetic changes in this new version and it is recommended that everyone upgrade.

Also, as a side note.. the windows client development has been taken over by me so all questions regarding it should be directed to visions@livejournal.com.

I hope you like the new version.

Bug user "axodys" ... he has a wonderful looking client, but hasn't released it yet.

I like to give him a hard time, but I suspect he's just busy and doesn't want to release it prematurely.

all the beta versions that were released were Win32-visions. That has since changed to Win32-MFC. In that process, there was a back versioning.

You should download the one posted here, and continue down that line. It is newer than the one you have...

Sorry about the confusion there.

I'd love to see shortcuts to insert (ctrl-I would do nicely) and (ctrl-B) in the message window.

Would sure make it easier to italicise/embolden text.

... for the people having problems
[info]visions

try this if you were having problems with the version that was up on http://wwww.livejournal.com/download/. This may solve your problem. Please comment here if you had a problem before and this fixes it. If this does not fix it, please also post a comment here.

The issue seems to lie in an incompatability between distribution dll's and this has hopefully now been resolved.

Brad has moved the version that was up previously into the preview section until we work out the problem.

Thanks.

FWIW, here's my experience with 1.4.2:

Had 1.3.8, downloaded the "upgrade" version of 1.4.2 from livejournal.com. The first time I ran the client, it worked. Second time, it GPFs thanks to MSVCRT.DLL.

Uninstalled, wiped the livejournal directory. Rebooted. Downloaded 1.4.2-full from visions.edu. Installation bitches at me in the same manner as it did for the_chuck, except it says it can't access MSVCRT.DLL, not OLEPRO32.DLL. So, I hit "ignore." Client GPFs after installation, same as before.

I've got Windows98 "first edition" with IE5.5, if that helps.

Hooray for MICROS~1 WINDOW~1.

I ran the new version, and logged in as myself just fine. I closed it and opened it later and it GPFed.
So, I went back to an older version and used it for a time. I switched to the mirclj account temporarily to edit some old entries and closed it. Nothing weird so far.
Later, I accidentally started the new version again (I kept it installed in a different directory) and it worked... I logged in as mirclj and there were no problems. I logged out, and chose martmart from the combobox and it GPFed... not in an MFC DLL but in the LiveJournal app itself. So long as I don't select martmart it works just fine...

Any ideas?

I've downloaded the full install, not the upgrade, of v1.42 of the new Windows LJ client. I have installed it over previous installations of LJ Windows client 1.38 on both Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 SP1, both with all the most recent security updates.

Everything's working fine. In both cases, I have installed the client, made a journal entry using it. Then I rebooted and made another journal entry, all with no problem - no GPF's, no MFC errors, or any of the other problems others are reporting.

Note that I do have only one log-on, and only one journal, but I think that's the case for most people.

Just in case noone else has posted this, I went through your instructions with the DLLs and everything-- still doesn't work. Sorry, visions. . . good luck getting it back to work, but for now, I'm back to 1.3.8. If there's anything I can do to help you solve the problem, since apparently you're not having a problem running it, just let me know either on a comment on my journal or e-mail me at casey@livejournal.com.

Well, something's working....

It looks like the old client (1.3.something?), but has the features of the new one....

I think what I did was uninstall all livejournal client program files, do a full install of the 1.3.whatever prog, then ran the UPDATE for the new prog.....and that's been working well, no errors or shuttings-down or anything....

I wish I could remember for sure that that's how I did it, but it's been a couple days and I just noticed the extra functions this morning..
