A year ago today the DOW reached the all time high of over 14,000...
Today we've gone below 9,000 and with 8 minutes left in the trading day the Dow has plunged over 600 points.

But, by all means, let's talk about Ayers.

UPDATE:
At the close...
8,579.19-678.91(-7.33%)
1,645.12-95.21(-5.47%)
910.11-74.83(-7.60%)

Now what were we saying about men and weathers or something?

UPDATE 2:
Yes... yes, please. Let's keep talking about the important stuffs.

oh my fucking god, the market

30 seconds later: ok. We're back from the 700 point drop to over 400 points. I almost threw up all over there. But it's not like I'm not still extremely nauseous. Dag.

Please notice the reverse visual depiction of my anxiety, especially around the 1:50pm mark.

Interesting thing to consider...
"Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, tells Tam Cam at the Memphis Airport that he will know by noon if the first presidential debate will take place. If McCain does not come by law there will be no debate because it is an 'illegal contribution.' When asked what the absolutely drop dead time is he replied, 'the final sweep by 5pm.'" www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/26/first-obama-mccain-presid_n_129569.html

So basically, it would be a $5m illegal contribution TO OBAMA. So if McCain continues with this bullshit bluff, it will have to be cancelled.

It's all so unfair.

EDIT: THE DEBATE IS ON!!!

McCain is officially a 'tard.

Friends,

PBS is doing a poll which asks if Palin is qualified
to be VP.  I am told the right wing has organized a yes
campaign--and the "yes" is at the moment winning. Take
literally seconds, go to:
http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html  and vote!

Please send this on.

Thank you!

Michelle FTW (aka Why she is my secret big sister from another mister)
(As seen on the Time Mag blog)

Michelle Obama: Don’t Vote Because “She’s Cute”

Associated Press

The potential first lady asks voters during an economic roundtable in Charlotte, North Carolina to make their choice based on issues, not because, “I like that guy” or, “she’s cute.”

After saying “she’s cute,” she adds with a smile: “I’m talking about me.”

(lol) *cue quietly going insane chuckle*
I pick up the phone and the trader says to me, before being transferred to my Portfolio Manager, "The World is ending. The World. Today. It's ending."

lol Armageddon. Sigh.

Yes, I'm not sure how to feel about all of this either.

On Politics Hiatus
In order to stay somewhat sane and depression-free, I've been actively trying to stay away from any politics tv and news reading (because I have been severely addicted to it for the past year) while donating and volunteering to go to PA and hopefully OH so that I can focus my outrage into something productive.

But I had a chilling thought today while on the train to work from Harlem with the Post & Daily News headline screaming in my face. The culture war bullshit is not only polarizing, but it's underscoring a lot of proclivities within the media and perhaps even the culture that we would not like to see as true.

And as a black woman, I would like to say that there have been more instances of racism than sexism with the gender card being used as the overreaching outrage meanwhile it's okay to question his blackness, and whether his working in communities is experience enough because it was in the cities and whether his name is scary enough.

In general, black people as a whole have been watching what's been going on without all out screaming racism because pulling the racism card doesn't do anything positive but instead puts both parties in uncomfortable places.

But if indeed McCain wins off of all of this bullshit, bullshit and lies and distractions, then I fear that there will be a more pervasive gloom over America. Remember, all of this is happening during what can be easily seen as indicators of one of the worse economic times we may see in a long time and certainly in my lifetime.

All of this is depressing. And I am losing hope. Only because I feel that this cast change for the sweeps season (and isn't it? don't they always add some sexiness and a bunch of babies to shows to raise the ratings on tv?) will actually work for those who don't pay attention or would rather pay attention to the things outside of hard issues.

This is not liberal panic, this is me, as an American, as a mother and a daughter who lives in the city in the crosshairs of any possible terrorist attack, who is concerned that nothing good can come from this and America is beginning to rear its ugliest head.

So, yea, I need to step away from the news for a while.

And then I see this and a silver lining starts to peek out from somewhere.

When do we get to act like adults again? When do we leave the name calling and juvenile finger pointing on the playground and get back to class to get anything done?

HAVE AT IT, MY LIBRARIAN VALKYRIES
I dunno if y'all know, but a good amount of my friends here on LJ are Librarians.

So as you know, Sarah Palin tried to have a bunch of books banned when she became Mayor. And then she tried to have the Head Librarian fired when she, rightly refused.

Friends... Here's the list of the books she MAY HAVE tried to ban* (and lol omg on the books)

*Please note: These are the books people are ALWAYS trying to ban for whatever reason.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
Blubber by Judy Blume
Holy fuck! Bridge to Terabithia? )

Clutch the pearls, people. This is the post in which I actually feel sorry for Republicans.
Seriously.

Why is the media vetting Palin? Wasn't McCain supposed to have done this?

Apart from the whole petty bullshit about her family and blah blah blah...

Her husband was a registered member of the Alaskan Independence Party until right before she started her political career.

Meaning, they were part of a party that actively tried to secede from the Country. "Secede" as in "break away from". Fuck a flagpin, they were "Alaskan First, American Second".

How did McCain not know this? WTF?

If I this shit was happening with the nominee of my party I would be going apeshit. The Repubs must be killing themselves right now.

What the fuck? Is he even trying to win? Is this the best the Repubs can offer?

omg Barack's our next President!
