I promised a real, serious post. Unfortunately, this is me, so serious is going to be lacking.
Hi, everyone! Sorry I dropped off the face of LJ. This summer wasn't exactly busy, though it felt like I had a lot going on. There was the Japan trip, and then lots of back and forth from Fresno to LA and Fresno to Medford. My wee bitty sister is all grown up and off at college now, though only a short distance away so I get to see her occasionally.
The biggest news, I guess, is that I'm now a senior English major with 100+ pages of thesis ahead of her. So what do I choose to write about?
No, not fanfiction, but close. Science fiction. Written by women, specifically. It is the BEST TOPIC EVER. Or so I hope. My main goal was not to hate myself within 3 months of starting my research. So now I'm plowing away, reading lots of articles and chapters and primary source material. I'm focusing on Octavia Butler, Joan D. Vinge, and Connie Willis (and probably a decent helping of Anne McCaffery), though there will also be Doris Lessing and Suzy McKee Charnas and Joanna Russ and...
As you might be able to tell, I have tons of stuff to work with. Neld will be a busy Neld. Just remind me how enthusiastic I was in April when I have to finish the thing and turn it in.
This being my senior year, I'm also looking to the future (sort of). My trip to Japan at the beginning of the summer was AMAZING and inspired a new life goal, or at least a goal for the next few years. I want to go back, and I want to stay there for as long as I possibly can. The easiest and least financially-detrimental way of doing this will be for me to go teach English. :D So I'm going to apply for the JET program and see if I can steal away over there. This has me so excited, and I can't wait to get it all started. I'm a little nervous because of my total lack of Japanese skillz (no seriously, I don't know any Japanese). Hopefully they'll overlook this. I know knowledge of Japanese isn't necessarily a prerequisite. And I pick up languages fast.
ANYWAY. This is what has been going on with me. Now in light of the fact that I have barely looked at my friends page in ages, what have you been up to?

Britain is Repossessing the U.S.A. A Message from John Cleese
To the citizens of the United States of America: In light of your failure to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy). Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.
1. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.
2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix -ize will be replaced by the suffix -ise.
Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').
3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.
There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize. You will relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen.
4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.
5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent.
Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.
6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
7. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.
8. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour. 9. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline)-roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.
10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.
11. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting Nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of British Commonwealth - see what it did for them.
12. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie McDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.
13. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). Don't try Rugby - the South Africans and Kiwis will thrash you, like they regularly thrash us.
14. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.
15. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.
16. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).
17. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries in season.
God save the Queen. Only He can.

Better now than later... Hey, everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that I'm back and safe and not lying dead in some hypothetical Japanese ditch by the road (for the record, I don't think Japan actually has ditches by the sides of roads...). I actually got back Thursday night (which, of course, felt like Friday morning to me), but then I slept in the car all the way back to Oregon for my sister's high school graduation, and then of course I was busy helping with graduation celebrations. But I'm back for real now, if a little under the weather. The guy sitting behind me from Tokyo to Vancouver gave me his cold, and Monday and Tuesday were filled with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. However, because today is my birthday, I feel better-ish. :D
Yup, birthday! I'm 21 now, which is the legal age to drink in America. In honor of this momentous occasion, my dad is taking me out to get my first real drink. I had really better take a shower...
Anyway, seeing as how I am still snotty and germy and cannot breathe through my nose, I'm going to delay the Japan storytelling for a little while. Rest assured that I had a WONDERFUL time, and I've brought back many fun memories, in addition to a kimono, a haori, and a Totoro. :D And, of course, pictures. The pictures will come later, pending my computer's acceptance of the CDs they're on. It has randomly decided not to recognize CDs in its CD drive, so ... yeah. Anyway, I'll post them. :D
Thanks for the birthday wishes I've already received. You guys really are the best, even with me going onto radio silence for weeks at a time. *hugs you all*

So, just in case anyone was wondering... I'm off for two weeks because I'm going to Japan. :D I'll go through intarnets withdrawal, but even then I'll be too busy having fun to think about it much. Anyway, hope you guys are all doing well, and I'll see you again in 2 weeks!
<3 Much love.

Hey, guys! Woohoo! I'm out of school! Man, I'm going to be a senior next year ... wicked. Well, Thesis really will be wicked. But I don't care, I'll be a senior! On the first floor! You have no idea how much I will appreciate not having to move into and out of a third floor room in a building without elevators...
Anyway, yes. I'm out for the summer, I think. This means more time for writing, I hope, but that will probably depend on what kind of job I get. I refuse to work in a hotel again ... that was too much unnecessary stress and messing up of sleep cycles.
Oh, oh! And I leave for Japan on the 24th! That's a week and a half away! *runs off to squee in a corner* We'll be staying in Kyoto and visiting Nara for the first week, then the second week we're going to Tokyo. There is so much fun stuff planned, I don't know how I'll ever manage to do everything. We'll be going to a public bathhouse in Nara (because really, I can't deprive the Japanese of my luscious body. That would be cruel), and karate_kitsune and keitess will be getting dressed up as geisha or maiko and I will take pictures! (I would be joining in the fun, but alas, I has not the moneyz.)
Speaking of moneyz ... I'm spending a little less than 2 weeks in Japan. What is a reasonable estimate for the amount that I'll spend on food? $100 a day? Just wondering how much I should bring for that...
Yes, so that is exciting. The rest of my summer, not so much, for I will be working hard. And probably writing. But it will be okay. :D I'm just happy to be out of school.

Sweetest Downfall 9/? Hey, guys. Sorry it's been so long, but the semester ends for me soon, so of course I'm up to my nose hairs in papers and homework. Didn't mean to disappear on you, though. To make up for it, some more fluff.
Title: Sweetest Downfall
Author: Neldluva (rockininlasgalen@yahoo.com)
Rating: NC17 overall
Length: more than 25,000 words and counting … this chapter = 571
Pairings: Cloud/Elena, implied past Cloud/Tifa, one-sided Elena/Tseng, past Zack/Cloud, implied Tseng/Rufus (yes, confusing, I know … most of these pairings don’t show up until later, and most are only in passing)
Warnings: explicit heterosexual acts including oral, bondage, whatever other kinky things come into my head; hints of homosexual activity
Summary: Is it really such a bad thing to get involved with someone who was once your enemy? And what if you just can’t let go of your past?
Author’s note: Sorry for the delay. I meant to post this ages ago, but school got in the way. Now I’m procrastinating, so it’s all good!

For the Record, Life Just Got Like 8 Bajillion Times Better I mean, not like I'm a depressed emo kid. My life goes pretty well, in general. But the red tide started flowing this morning, and that always makes me feel gross. That, and perhaps I have leftover tension from finishing that paper last night ... yay stress! So things weren't horrible, but they weren't peachy keen either.
And then something happened to make that 8 bajillion times better. Or, to be specific, some thingS.
First I listened to some Cowboy Junkies, and they always cheer me up despite the heavy bass and depressing tone of their songs. Then I listned to Mika (and/or this one ... god, he's so cute!), and Mika always cheers me up. Then, just to top things off, I listened to Aerosmith for a little while, and all was well.
But then, the best thing ever happened.
The Starbucks barista gave me a Passion Tea Lemonade. On the house.
My life is now complete. <3
(For anyone who hasn't tried a passion tea lemonade, GO OUT AND DO IT NOW. It's the one Starbucks drink I endorse fullheartedly. True, Starbucks is an overly capitalist institution that doesn't believe in fair trade and that uses non-biodegradable cups, but ... passion tea lemonade. For free. Can't beat that with a stick, man.)

A gift fic for Rattie! For the record, if anyone has any title suggestions, please let me know! I was blanking out on this one...
Title: Love in a Time of Trouble
Author: Neldluva (rockininlasgalen@yahoo.com)
Fandom: FFVII
Pairing: Rufus/Tseng
Rating: PG, PG13
Warnings: Fluff, humor, slashy snuggles
Disclaimer: Rufus, Tseng, and Reno don’t belong to me, sadly. Squeenix owns them.
Summary: After the destruction of the ShinRa Tower, both Tseng and Rufus are broken. They take comfort in each other during the aftermath.
Author’s Note: Ages and aaaaaaages ago, the Magic Rat ( delease) requested this fic from me, I think perhaps she was having a bad day. Needless to say, I didn’t finish it within a day. So now, maybe six months after it was requested, here it is. The original prompt, from way back in October, looked like this: “I just really want to see something lovely and sappy with Rufus and Tseng. Preferably huddled together in terror shortly after the WEAPON attack and the building is almost demolished. A little luvvin' and nuzzlin' or maybe even some sex.” There’s no sex, but there is lots of cuddling and cuteness and fluff. Hope you like it, Rattie!

And now, totally from left field... I thought my fellow writerly types might be interested in a story I wrote for class. One of the classes I'm taking this semester is "Politicizing Magic: Russian and Soviet Fairytales." It's really interesting and unlike anything I've ever taken before, except perhaps for that other fairytales class I took when I was a freshman.
Anyway, our most recent assignment was to write a fairytale in the Russian tradition/style, either pro-Soviet or anti-Soviet. Me, being the crazy little rebel liberal who is far too skeptical of Soviet culture, decided to write an anti-Soviet fairytale. Before I wrote it, I had a dream about a donkey, so I made a donkey the main character. Anyway ... it references KGB-style disappearances, "The Dragon" by Yevgeny Shvarts, and perhaps even my own political preferences, and totally plays with "ass." It's totally a satire, so take nothing seriously. Enjoy!

A little shaken, but mostly just sort of pissed. Yeah. I know fanfiction is a tough business. We don't get paid, the majority of writers in the field really can't write that well, and our critics either love us or hate us. There are vicious ship wars leaving blood in their wakes, and entire fandoms can be brought to their knees over what turns out to be stupid personal issues. Sorta makes you wonder why you stay in it, huh? I like fandom because I can commiserate with a bunch of people who are fellow fans, and I can write about some pretty darn cool characters. That and I have my personal fans, a few people who like me and aren't afraid to tell me about it. I really appreciate that.
But every once in a while, somebody stupid pipes up. For instance, this evening, when I came back from anime club, I received this message from chapter 1 of Boy Soldier at ff.net:
I'm sorry, but...I can't believe the way you've characterized Reno here. Like, there are no words for how UNlike Reno this man is.
Now at first, I was like, "What? They don't like me? *wibble*" (Let's face it, I'm a puppy, I like to be given treats. :D ) But almost immediately that translated into anger. I had to go back and reread my first chapter to reassure myself, but my first conviction stands true.
I like the way I characterize Reno. I think he's a pretty cool dude. Messed up and not loved enough, true, but at the same time very kickass. And I have more than 50 reviews at ff.net plus countless ones from my LJ and y!gal that agree with me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if someone doesn't like my Reno ... well, I think they're strange, but whatever. But to tell me they dislike him with absolutely no explanation, after reading (I assume) one chapter of a much longer story? Juvenile. And it only serves to ruffle my feathers and make me go protective of my writing.
This reaction is probably because it's the first negative review I've had in ... a very long time. I've forgotten how to take them in stride. Oh well, though, right?
Do people who read here get flamed a lot? Are you controversial and cutting-edge? Do your critics hate you or love you? I'm remembering now that, in the past and present, I sort of view flames as battle scars. If someone gets riled enough to flame you, you must be doing something right, I think. Agree/disagree?

Boy Soldier 21/21 (Woohoo, the end!) Title: Boy Soldier
Author: Neldluva (rockininlasgalen@yahoo.com)
Fandom: FFVII
Pairings: None, or lots, depending on how you look at it.
Rating: NC17
Don’t read this if you don’t like: Angst, sex (of the m/m and m/f sort), foul language, underage sex, questionable consent, masturbation, voyeurism (sort of), violence, blood, drug and alcohol use, prostitution
Disclaimer: Reno and FF7-verse are definitely not mine. Please don’t sue, I have negative monies. The OC’s are mine, though. Don’t steal.
What you can expect from the fic overall: This is my version Reno’s backstory, or how he got where he was in the various FF7 games and movies. It is a long, difficult journey, sometimes funny, sometimes sad. But hey, that’s life.
What you can expect from this chapter: A very, very intense torture scene. Reno is, after all, a Turk, and you just shouldn’t fuck with a Turk…
Author's note: Yes, Reno scares even me sometimes. But fear not, the story is not over, even though this is technically the last chapter. I plan to have more in this arc coming soon. A huge thank you to everyone who has read and/or reviewed! You guys have supported me through more than a year of posting this story, and I think it’s turned out quite well! Please let me know what you think, I always love knowing how you guys respond.

Just a general sort of note... Okay, dudes. Because I'm slightly paranoid and because so many of you seem interested in my personal life (fwee! coolness! I shall have to remember to do more personal posts...), I'm going to be doing more personal stuff. Or at least I'll try to. I still don't have much of an interesting life, but whatev. I'll tell you about it anyway.
Anywho, the paranoid part. I'm going to keep those more personal entries friends-locked. That means that only people I list as friends will see them ... right? Anyway, this requires me to friend you. If you'd like to be able to read personal stuff, leave me a message or something and I'll friend you.
Stories will stay unlocked. I defy censors, haha! But you'll still be able to read those in any case.
Uh ... yeah. Just leave me a note if you want me to friend you. :D

I've got a question for the people who frequent my journal... Do you like hearing about my life? I know the vast majority of posts I make, especially lately, are stories and story-related. LOL, I'll never stop doing that, no worries.
But are you guys curious about what goes on in my life? Should I do more personal posts? Keep you updated on the homework load and whatever shenanigans I get up to? Not like there's much of those, but still...
For instance: I'm going to my dad's for spring break! I leave tomorrow at about 12:30. I'm soooooo excited! *bounces* A week of hanging around and doing nothing and eating sushi. Oh, and watching movies. He has Grindhouse, and I can't wait to see it. Freaking ZOMBIE MOVIE! It'll be fun. Oh, and stealing Shaun of the Dead from Thomas (because I have to see it, I want to see it! There is a critical part of my zombie education lacking!).
Work was boring today ... I'm at the Career Development Office as the librarian. Well, there's not much for me to do to the library on a day-to-day basis, and even less when everyone's already left for break and nobody comes in. So I sat around and poked at amazon.com and read the jackets of zombie books. Fun times.
So ... verdict? Yes or no on more personal posts? Whatever is fine for me, I don't have the burning desire to tell y'all everything I do. :D

This is kind of cool! I Am A: Chaotic Neutral Human Ranger/Rogue (1st/1st Level)
Ability Scores:
Strength-10
Dexterity-10
Constitution-12
Intelligence-14
Wisdom-12
Charisma-12
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He values his own liberty but doesn't strive to protect others' freedom. He avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. A chaotic neutral character does not intentionally disrupt organizations as part of a campaign of anarchy. To do so, he would have to be motivated either by good (and a desire to liberate others) or evil (and a desire to make those different from himself suffer). A chaotic neutral character may be unpredictable, but his behavior is not totally random. He is not as likely to jump off a bridge as to cross it. Chaotic neutral is the best alignment you can be because it represents true freedom from both society's restrictions and a do-gooder's zeal. However, chaotic neutral can be a dangerous alignment because it seeks to eliminate all authority, harmony, and order in society.
Race: Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Primary Class: Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions. A ranger's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.
Secondary Class: Rogues have little in common with each other. While some - maybe even the majority - are stealthy thieves, many serve as scouts, spies, investigators, diplomats, and simple thugs. Rogues are versatile, adaptable, and skilled at getting what others don't want them to get. While not equal to a fighter in combat, a rogue knows how to hit where it hurts, and a sneak attack can dish out a lot of damage. Rogues also seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to avoiding danger. Experienced rogues develop nearly magical powers and skills as they master the arts of stealth, evasion, and sneak attacks. In addition, while not capable of casting spells on their own, a rogue can sometimes 'fake it' well enough to cast spells from scrolls, activate wands, and use just about any other magic item.
Find out What Kind of Dungeons and Dragons Character Would You Be?, courtesy of Easydamus (e-mail)
I'm surprised I'm not a halfling ... but okay. :D And I totally expected the Chaotic bit, so Chaotic Neutral seems to suit me. (Surprisingly, my second-highest race score was Elf. And I tied classes between ranger, rogue, and bard. I'd make a better bard than a ranger or rogue, I think...)

Hey, long time no see! Hey kids. It's been a while since I've done a personal update, huh?
My life still isn't too interesting. I have very little in the way of reports to make, except that I'll be flying off to Japan for a couple of weeks after school gets out :D I totally can't wait, it's going to be so much fun. We're going to Nara, Kyoto, and Tokyo. There will be squeeing and fangirling. And I want to get a kimono, if I can find one that costs less than ... a large number. I will already be broke after this trip. ;)
Anyway, I just wanted to let people know that there's a new community in town! It's called Infernal Recs, and it is a community for story recommendations. Multi-fandom, and so far contains FFVII, FFVIII, and Samurai Champloo (well, we started it yesterday, what do you expect?). So what we're planning to do is compile all of our favorite fics of various fandoms and post them so people can see. This will, obviously, be limited to fandoms that theinfernaldoll and I frequent, or we wouldn't be able to make good recs. But feel free to join/watch/whatever! And you can always leave comments with some of YOUR favorite fics, and we can add them to the rec lists (after reviewing them to make sure of their quality, of course). Or you can just stop by once in a while if you feel like you want a good read. Anything posted there has our stamp of approval.
That is all, puppets. :D I'm going to work on some gift fics tonight, and perhaps post more of Boy Soldier or something. Erm, perhaps I should find a bunker to hide in for that last part...

Don’t read this if you don’t like: Angst, sex (of the m/m and m/f sort), foul language, underage sex, questionable consent, masturbation, voyeurism (sort of), violence, blood, drug and alcohol use, prostitution Disclaimer: Reno and FF7-verse are definitely not mine. What you can expect from this chapter: A longer chapter … well, a lot had to happen. There is more smut, sort of. And … yeah. Just read it, you’ll see. Author's note: Okay, just a little bit more calm before the storm. Or maybe this is the storm, depending on how you see it. But I like this chapter, and I hope you guys do too! Previous Chapters: http://neldluva.livejournal.com/tag/boy+soldier
