The reason I want to express compassion to the world is not for world peace, but because I want to be surrounded by compassion. I want, for my own happiness, to be surrounded by people who care. That is all I really want. That may very well be action on the individual level. It seems to me that compassion is motivated mainly by a desire to live in a compassionate world, for the self. I don’t really think it is necessary to step in front of a bullet to save someone of whom I have no knowledge. I desire my own peace. I desire to live in a peaceful world. Then I think I must find a peaceful world in which to live, go there, and be happy. The rest of the world is neither begging my advice nor asking me for help. If two people want to kill each other, I will not stand in their way, nor will I stand between two opposing armies. Instead, I will take my hat. I will leave. I will go away on my own, with nothing but the warmth I desire to share with others, and for fuck’s sake, I will find people to share it with. My own small world of peace.
