Matunga and Maya Burman [Jun. 18th, 2008|03:08 pm]

[mood | hungry]

Umesh had to leave in less than two weeks after we got married and I was to join him as soon as my visa could be arranged. We were apart for a period of 37 days. It feels like a lot when you are newly married but I was occupied with doctor visits, being with ma and travelling back to Bombay to be with the in laws.

On those visits, a walk around the Matunga area and ending the day with pani puri and a plate of bhel had become something of a routine. I would walk back home browsing through the road side book stalls on the way. Some of them sell Archies and you can return them the next day and get some of the money back. And since I was in no mood to collect more luggage than I already had, this worked just fine for me.

On one such walkbackhome, I discovered the art of Maya Burman. Being inclined to Art Nouveau in taste, where the forms are free flowing, the book immediatly caught my attention. Her work has often been described as a kind of tapestry. What I like about it is the mood, the detail and the dreamlike story telling in each of the works. I also think she uses the medium of ink and watercolours very differently and beautifully.

Happy Ridders by Maya Burman
