| Colorizing Livetrace Signatures |
[Oct. 7th, 2008|12:01 pm] |
I imported a jpg signature into illustrator and used livetrace to make it more graphic but am lost as to how to change the color from black since it isn't recognizing the actual signature as much as the box around it. I was trying to avoid having to trace it by hand since I don't have my tablet with me at work. There must be a way to do this?
Thanks |

| Frustrated with color matching |
[Oct. 7th, 2008|04:29 pm] |
Hey, don't know if this is the right area to post this question, but since I love reading what you people write about...I figured...hey...lemme venture this.
A client (Actually two of them) went to a paint store and selected the swatches of colors that they wanted on their website, and she wants those exact shades replicated.
Problem is, how do I do that?
Its going to be working with grays and light pinks, cool blues, and mild browns...and I find myself frustrated because I don't know how to translate those color samples they gave me into hexadecimal values I can work with.
Any suggestions? |

| Weird Print Booklet problem in InDesign CS3 |
[Oct. 7th, 2008|12:47 pm] |
Hey Gang,
Here's a strange one. I just tried Print Booklet-ing, which I do a lot of, to my printer. The output I got was dramatically enlarged pages not in spreads, as they should have been. If that doesn't make sense, I can photograph or scan, or just try to clarify.

Hmm. Seems to me that the two bolded statements are somewhat in opposition with each other.

The episode of Heroes is streaming and we are going to watch it. Tonight, I have been working on my web-video player. A kinda winamp for video websites like YouTube. Trying to bring all that storage of video into one application. This isn't really a commercial venture yet as I have not decided on if I need an iPhone or not.
The thought has occurred to me to make the player open source, and charge a micro payment of some sorts for my time and effort; but then I nail my palm to the desk and then slide off my chair. I really got to stop _not_ thinking about the hard work I put into things; I need my palms.
The darn TStream is still downloading and I have do some interesting pause play maneuver to get it to download enough to play. It's funny I had to tell the Coyote roomie to stop tormenting on our corporate connection; tormenting(v) 6. The act of sucking one's bandwidth with BitTorrent.
I have a few days to kill waiting for an answer on a submitted contract with a client. There's really good money in it, but the signature for the company is on vacation, margarita in a pineapple cup be damned! This is why I have been working on this personal pet project of mine.
Incognito goes well; a game our company will be releasing sometime in this decade. We're on the path to hire a writer and here's a screenshot of the BFG9000 of our game.

[Oct. 6th, 2008|08:42 pm] |
I've got a old copy of Frontpage 2003 and I've done a couple of small sites with XSitePro, plus a couple of small sites with WordPress. At this point I haven't used Drupal or Joomla, though I've heard good things about them.
The project I'm interested in doing is to take previous pdf versions of a bi-monthly magazine that has about 15 articles per issue and create a site with html versions. So there are about 15 different topics/categories and I've got about 24 back issues to do. The other aspect is each issue has 3 versions (3 different languages).
Any thoughts on the best way to do this? Best CMS, site structure (subdomain vs subdirectories)?

[Oct. 6th, 2008|09:35 pm] |
Here is a problem that I have run into. For my type class we have to do a type sampler. for this I chose jenson. One of the parts of it that I need to include is some pectoral representation of Mr. Nicolas Jenson himself. Now i have gone though all of the books at my colleges library even remotely related to typography or moveable type. also i have searched the crap out of the internet, finding postage size printouts of his face, as well as searching the ArtStor database. and iv got nothing at all.
So i come to you wonderfully helpful folks. asking if any of you would happen to know of a book i could get (i am willing to buy) or someplace online that i could find a pectoral representation of my man Jenson.
any help would be very much appreciated. |

Hi everyone!
I landed a phone interview this week for a "graphic designer/publication specialist" position -- not sure what company or if I'm interviewing with a recruiter the company has hired or interviewing directly through their HR department.. I've had one of these kinds of interviews before, but I think it was a total disaster.
Any suggestions or words of advice? Do's & Don'ts? Past experiences?

| *Sleepy Waves* |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|06:16 pm] |
Well what I thought was going to be a calm weekend.....well it wasn't!
Last week was crazy still with my boss being out from her heart attack. Friday night I went down to the bar to chat with Chuck and do some planning on the events we want to do over the next year. I didn't stay out really late which was good!
Saturday I was going to meet the gang at Archon for the afternoon. I woke up a bit earlier than I had planned on so I decided I was going to ride my motorcycle. I got all my gear together and filled my bike up and did my longest trip on the freeway so far with a little bit of extra stops about 50 miles round trip. A lot of this for me was getting over my nervousness of going on the bridge downtown into Illinois. I am on elevated decks for several miles and I really realized just how light my bike was. I got blown around a bit but all in all I made it fine. Was very comfortable running at speeds 60-75mph. Also figured out the best aerodynamic crouch for my bike with all the mods I have done with it. I had planned on coming home late afternoon but my friend that runs the masquerade was desperate for green room help to get everyone ready and begged me to stay so I said yes. We hit Bandanas BBQ for lunch and then I knew it was going to be a late night with helping with the masque so I rode home and dropped my bike off and brought my truck back. I really didn't want to chance being exhausted as I would knew I would be and then riding that stretch I have to ride at Midnight. Made good time getting home and got the truck and ran back. Got situated and aury, Butch, in0p and I got things rolling in the Green Room. Michelle and Stephanie were trying to get other things situated to they turned me loose to get stuff worked out and we got it all set. We started at 430pm in the green room and got out of there sometime after 11pm. But the time got everyone home and me home it was 1am. I was one tied and sore woof!
Sunday started a bit later at least for the Bad Dog Biker Brunch. Got down there just before 11 and met up with the crew. Gave the bikers in the group the gremlin bells I had gotten for them. Had a really good breakfast. After brunch I rode around a bit since it was such a nice day. Started getting really sleepy though so I went home and ended up taking a 3 hour nap. Got laundry done and did some cleaning and tidying around the house a bit.
All in all a good weekend. I still haven't caught up on my sleep though!!
Hugs y'all! |

| Chagrin Falls Shopping |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|02:53 pm] |
Okay, I admit it, though I'm a bit embarrassed about it, I do like to shop. I will have dreams where I walk into a cool store like Anthropologie and everything is on unbelievable sale and I have armfuls of clothing and I wake up disappointed. And then I think, "Yikes! That's what I dream about?" Well, that and purple skies and beautiful gardens and awesome cameras and flying, but yeah.
So Jared's mom and I went shopping while the boys chopped up a tree that fell during the last hurricane. Which would I rather do, hmmmm...
I spent the most money ever on a pair of shoes. I had been wanting boots and something versatile enough that I could wear it for dressier occasional (like with all my nice new Anthropologie sweaters) but still be comfortable. Enter Naturalizer Cerina boot (and I certainly didn't pay that much for them!) My big runner/rower/kung fu calves plus minuscule feet makes finding knee high boots that fit difficult. The mid calf style fit nicely. They are very comfortable, I was surprised at how pretty I felt in flat (thick legs means high heels make you feel prettier because they thin our your legs), they looked okay under the jeans I was wearing, and they were on sale: regular $99, their price $89, plus Jared's mom had a $10 off coupon. They were still $74 when it was all said and done. But I think they'll be worth it. Jared's mom said Naturalizer is a good company. And they're leather, which I still have mixed feelings about. I don't buy things like real fur, so I feel hypocritical about buying leather, but then I think, "Well, they're going to keep slaughtering the cows for Big Macs, might as well support using all the animal like the Native Americans." Plus, Jared and I have gotten into a new style of environmentalism that's really quiet an old idea: spend a little more money on stuff that lasts. A pair of leather boots that last 15+ years will use less resources and money than synthetic ones that fall apart in 3 years (like some of my old pair of boots.) So there's my thoughts. I guess what's most important is that you think before you buy. I've been trying to do that every time I pick up an item.
Chagrin Falls is a town the city has worked extremely hard at keeping quaint. You won't find any McDonald's or Cash Advance places. One shop I fell in love with is called Stash Style. They had a moss covered chandelier in the window! The owner goes to a lot of estate sales and it felt like a more sincere version of the nick knacks section of Anthropologie. They had handkerchiefs, giant cupcakes, figurines, and some of the most absolutely fantastic vintage style Halloween decorations. I bought some novelty gum (Christmas presents), a Halloween surprise for a friend of mine, a cute pumpkin throw pillow, and they had a violin case filled with old chandelier strings of crystals for a buck each. I picked one up for a choker. They had some more great Halloween decorations, but I decided it was stuff I could recreate myself, so I wrote down some notes and was off. On the way home, we got a call from Jared's dad. The woman at the shop had accidentally overcharged me. She was freaking out. Jared's mom paid in cash and I paid with a card, but am not local, so how did she get a hold of us? When I called her back she said she was desperate, so she called the operator trying to find a number with the same last name as my credit card. Luckily Jared's parents and I have the same last name and they are local, so they called his parent's house. How cool is that? We got everything straightened out and I will definitely come back there. She was so sweet!
Well, tonight we are going to dinner to a place called Gamekeepers Taverne Restaurant. They are noted for their exotic meats which of course I will not partake in, but they have some great seafood, which I will eat. Jared's dad recommends the Salmon with capers and mussels.

| | Dream Evil - Fire! Battle! In Metal! | ] | Yes that's right after an eternity of silence something actually happened! In case some of you weren't aware, what's been going on is a tranny swap yielded rather unpleasant effects and thus is being removed and stock being put back in it's place, should happen sometime next week (finally).
In the meantime, something actually got changed. I hit an amazing stroke of luck in aquiring a set of rims, with tires already on them from a coworker. I saw something new posted on the bulletin board that caught my attention, an add for a set of rims with some parellis on them for $150, but no list for what they came off of.
With bald, starting to crack, nail filled, and bent rimmed stock steelies on the car now I figured it couldn't hurt to at least take a look since they were right in town. So i drive out to their house (its actully her husband was selling them) got aquanted etc etc. I found out that the rims he was selling were a set of optional smoothies for his 2001 pt cruiser.
I got smart before making the trip across town to see if there was a chance they'd even fit and sure enough, both my car and his share the same lug pattern but I wasn't sure of the offset. So, some fitting was done with 0 hitches anywhere, the kinda smooth sailing that makes you wonder what catastrophie is waiting to happen afterward.
He was actually quite the nice fellow too, after I handed him a pile of greenbacks, he shook his head, and handed $25 back to me saying $125 was enough and to go ahead and put the rest in my tank. I thanked him, gave a final handshake, and drove off with the shiny (he polished them for me after I got them on the car) new set of chromers that when I first saw "BEETLE!" was the first word that popped into my head.
They look really interesting on the car too, they have this out of place look to them, but at the same time still seem to fit the car decently enough, but for the price, getting 4 rims, with rubber that had been only driven on for 2 months on them, not a single crack, nail, anything, for the price... hell yeah it's worth it.
( Piccies behind zee cut! )About the only thing i'm curious on and not hoping to find out anytime soon, is how the brembos will react with cooling reduction from the lack of ventig in the rimes themselves. so far normal driving they seem fine so long as I don't have to stop in an aweful hurry that is. That aside I'm already starting to get attached to them. Just so Shiny!!!

| Questions about Self-Identity: Logo & Email |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|11:03 am] |
A couple questions for you all:
the easier business: coming up with an email address. My domain name is melanie-richards.com, and so I get an email address along with it (something@melanie-richards.com). I'm trying to come up with a word to put in front of the "@" that will be short and not hokey or redundant. I've been trying to figure out what my favorite designers do, (Mike Perry's is talktome@midwest.com, something which I'm not sure I could "pull off") but it hasn't helped much. Any ideas on what to put in an email for a domain that is already self named? Would contact@melanie-richards.com suffice, or is it too long?

Do I have to open a blank canvas, and drag them onto it? I've done this before awhile ago so my memory is hazy. I would appreciate it if someone could explain the steps to me. |

| NASes |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|08:49 am] |
| [ | Mood |
| | contemplative | ] | Well I've been thinking.. my storage situation is a bit of a mess. Data storage, that is.
I've got tons of CDs worth of data all over, lots of information and such strewn across over 10 hard drives on 5 computers, and it's become a chore to find anything that I want anymore.
I think the solution is a NAS. I've been looking into some different devices and such, and also looking at building one myself. I've come to the conclusion, mainly based on price, that the latter is the better decision.
Part of the reason that I'm looking toward a NAS, rather than a solution like eSATA box or something, is because I'm wanting to make it available to the other people living at the house as well, so that it can be a central storage point to put things up on. I also want it to be able to handle things such as torrents/newsgroups/standard downloads and other things autonomously, to try and cut down on the amount that we have to run our desktops. Hopefully it'll help to save a bit of power in the long run.
I've estimated that a 4TB NAS would cost about $700 to build at current HDD/memory prices. Here's what i'm looking at:
Intel D945GCLF2 Dual Core Atom 1.6Ghz motherboard (gigabit ethernet, onboard video, Mini-ITX form factor) 2GB DDR2 667 2GB flash drive (to run OS from) Promise 4-port SATAII PCI card 4 1TB Seagate 7200.11 drives
And some crazy case to hold it all. I've been looking pretty hard for a case to use, so if anyone's seen one that's fairly small, it'd be helpful. The main thing is that it has to have 4 internal 3.5" bays, which isn't easy to come by in the small desktop/cube case area.
I'll be running Ubuntu Server on it, and software RAID-5. This should yield me about 2.7TB of usable space, with redundancy. The dual-core Atom should be plenty enough to allow for speedy parity calculations, and the gigabit ethernet will keep things moving.
One of the main reasons for running software raid in linux as opposed to a hardware raid card, is that the data is a bit safer in that it's stored in an open format.. If that machine were to catastrophically fail, i could take all of the drives, throw them into any old machine, hook them up, load linux and have the array back up and running with one command.
Anyone else try something similar? Have any good ideas? let me know! |

So one of my sources, without saying so, just confirmed that leak to Boy genius Reports is spot in for what is going on in RIM. Apperantly, there is big security shakedowns going on.
Although I am not sure what all the hubbub is about. Basically he just let everyone know that Reverse-In-Motion is releasing a phone that is modeled off the T-Mobile Dash (whichever HTC device that was) and that the GUI is almost a direct ripoff of HTC's overlay for Window Mobile. Guess they can't help copying the best. Just so long as my email doesn't go thru their servers (like those of nearly everyone in New York and DC) they can play whatever stupid little games they want. |

| Looking for a room... |
[Oct. 5th, 2008|10:02 pm] |
| [ | Current Location |
| | 91711 | ] | I know this request comes very close to the time of the con, but I figure I'd make it anyway.
A couple of friends gave me the idea of attending MFF and I quite like it, but I haven't really had too much time to prepare. I think I've found some plane tickets that I like, but I want to make sure that I have a hotel room before I book them.
Here's who I am: I am a fursuiter from Southern California. I am clean (2 showers per day at least, and more if I've been suiting). I keep myself contained (I try to limit my space usage to half of the closet or less, and it's often less than that). I'm not in the room too often, but enjoy neater rooms so I can relax after suiting around. I basically just need a safe place to sleep and store my suit and clothing. I do not smoke and desire a non-smoking room. Friendship would also be nice. I'm outgoing and get along well with a variety of folks.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I'd like a hotel at the con hotel for ease of suiting. I'd also be coming on either Thursday or Friday (depending on the rooming situation) and leaving on Monday.
If you have space in a room for this fuskyote, please let me know. I will pay upfront, so you don't have to worry about dodgy payments. I can also get people to vouch for this fact.
Anyway, I hope this turns up something because I'd really like to go to MFF.
Thanks so much!
Best, Bucker |

| Thoughts on commissions |
[Sep. 29th, 2008|04:25 pm] |
Some thoughts on how to commission artists, and how artists can take commissions! If you have ever felt baffled, angry, confused, curious or whatever about the process, I hope to help a little. This is mostly aimed at those new to commission work, but I hope it can help anyone that reads it.
( This is way long, so I'll save your friends page. ) |
