    She surfaces again...
OK, THIS time, damn it, my sister is getting me a spankin' new computer. It is now four years for me in Portland, my Ex finally quit pestering me, I've been with my sweet wonderful Chris for six months now, and I'm running the spotlight at a drag show here in Portland on a weekly basis. The spotlighting is a volunteer gig, but I get paid in booze. We all know that counts, especially when the barkeep likes you.

    **PLUG**
Anyone who lives here in PDX should consider hitting up The D Word at the Red Cap Garage, Wednesday nights at 10, 21+, no cover, drink specials, etc.
    **PLUG**

I'm also currently praying to be able to get a job at New Seasons markets. 2.5 years at Plaid Pantries is just about enough to make me insane. And hopefully hire-able. Oh PLEEEEEZE any Gods listening, Help Me Get This Job.

So that's a really brief update. More when I have not just worked all day.

THIS TIME, my CPU has crashed. I have had the *worst* luck with my technology out here. Hopefully my family will be able to come through and help me with a new machine by xmas. I have no idea if i even have any friends left on this service at this point, which is sad.

I've got my very first stage hand gig in portland tonight. Running a spot light for drag queens, I LOVE IT! I'll update more when i'm actually awake.

    ACHTUNG! (please)
Rather than go back and edit...

From now, and in perpetuity, the name "Scott Hanson" has been changed to "Rimmer Hanson". Thus, unless I am specifically referring to Red Dwarf, any further mention of "Rimmer" in this blog will refer to my Ex.

    That is all.

    Happy New Year!
    I have survived 4/20/2008.

And I randomly awoke at 4:20 this morning. My body's timing amuses me.

OK, so, since this year really sucked it up at the outset, what with having to pry the Ex out of the apartment (see prior entry), I have declared 2008 did not start until April 20th. This year also is the Year of the Rat, I happen to be a Wood Rat (Weed rat?). I have reconnected with a dear old friend (old, by my PDX standards), and she's mostly done getting yarn extensions put in my hair, pics to follow.

I got to see Brook Pridemore!!! Saturday the 19th, he played a house-type show on the National Meltdown Tour over in NE PDX, someplace called the Ivy House. I walked in to the Ivy House and heard a familiar voice, followed it to it's source and announced "You have a stalker!" to which he said "No, I have a friend". :) I got to hang out with Brook for a little while before the show started, there were no earth-shattering revelations or anything, but he looks healthy and seemed to be having as good a time as possible while on tour in a minivan. Lysander and I were able to stay for the show, but unfortunately Blaine developed a migraine and had to bail. There were two local openers that I enjoyed (5, 6, 7, Great!, and Never Fall for a Dinosaur), and I will go to see if they manage to have more shows around town. Lacey, he says hello, and sadly we couldn't get pictures because a few testosterone/caffeine/booze filled idiots decided to start a fight and wind up getting the cops called at the end of the night. So, a great evening except for some boy-drama queens giving me no time for a proper goodbye, but I'll see Brook on tour again.

I hung out with one of my regulars for a little while yesterday, 'twas nifty. He seems like a decent sort, and someone I should hang out with more often.

OK, it's now 5 AM. I'm gonna try and sleep some more, since i got 8 hours all together this weekend.

    Hello again...
    It lives.

    Again.

Boy, I am sick of bein' without internet. I am now pirating my neighbor's wireless connection, mwahaha. Scott tried to steal my hard drives when I got his ass evicted. Magically, they had wound back up in my posession. It's amazing how karma works.

Long story short, I am free, free. I have an r.o. against Scott (bizarre, and unbelievable, but true). I have a dear sweet friend interested in me already. I'm still at Plaid. Life continues. The economy crashes. Spring is being psychotic here in pdx. It's been sunny/raining/hail 4 out of 7 days the past two weeks. Yes, all three. Sequentially and simeltaneously. It snowed for an hour last saturday morning. I fear for the crops.

Yeah, i just hate it when people sink slowly into depressive psychosis and try to drag others down with them. *washes hands*

Right now i'm just starting to get my bills paid current and get a life again. It should be a good year for me, though. I was born in the year of the Rat, and lookit dat, it's the year of the Rat!

That's all for now, but there's more for later :)

just a reminder that we do live in a closed system....
ScienceDaily (Jan. 14, 2008) — Want to begin to be more environmentally friendly in 2008 but can't afford a hybrid car? Don't worry — there are plenty of ways to lessen your impact on the environment that don't come with such a daunting price tag, says Matt Malten, assistant vice chancellor for campus sustainability at Washington University in St. Louis. And they likely will even save you some money without cramping your carbon-creating lifestyle — much.

It's easy being green: Idling computers and bottled water, when used wisely, can make minimal impacts on the Earth.

"Focus on reducing your energy and water consumption and your waste generation, and you'll be on your way to reducing your footprint on the planet," says Malten.

    1. Use fluorescent light bulbs. Yes, they're more expensive than incandescent light bulbs ($2 vs. $.50), but switch out your incandescent bulb for compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) in your house, and you could save up to 30 percent on your energy bill.

"According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program, CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescents and last 10 times longer," says Malten. "This, on average, results in $30 savings for the life of the bulb."

    2. Keep your car in excellent condition. Of course, it's best to walk, bicycle, carpool or use mass transit for your daily commuting, but for those who must use their own vehicles, improving even the most inefficient of cars' fuel mileage is as easy as keeping your tires properly inflated and changing your oil and air filters regularly. And follow those traffic laws — your car burns less fuel when you drive slowly and obey the speed limit on highways.

    3. Make sure your dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer are full before using them. The aforementioned major appliances consume large amounts of energy, so reduce their use as much as possible by only running them with full loads.

If you're in the market for new appliances or other electronics, look for the ENERGY STAR label to purchase the most energy efficient models available. "These appliances have been certified by a rigorous third-party review," says Malten. "In addition to saving energy and water consumption, they also will save consumers money."

    4. Wash clothes in cold water and line dry. Using cold water rather than hot in the washer saves electricity and works just as well as hot with most clothes. Line drying not only is more environmentally friendly, but it also will keep clothes from shrinking and fading.

    5. Shut down and unplug idle electronics. Your computer might be asleep, but if there's a light on, it's still using energy. Turn off and unplug your computer, printer, television, radio — any electronic device that you're not using.

    6. Skip the bottled water. Sure, water is good for you, but the process of harvesting the raw materials, processing and manufacturing the petroleum-based plastic water bottles and shipping them to market is extremely energy intensive. So filter your own water and fill up your own reusable bottles for water on-the-go.

    7. Supply your own bags and leftover containers. If you're headed to a restaurant that you know serves king-sized portions, bring a small piece of Tupperware along to take home the leftovers, and keep one fewer Styrofoam container from the landfill pile. Going to the supermarket? Opt out of the paper/plastic debate and bring your own canvas tote bags.

"Although many supermarkets recycle used plastic bags, the process still requires much energy to be used to transport and process the materials," says Malten. "Not only are reusable bags more sustainable, they are also becoming more of the norm, especially as more municipalities around the country are adopting zero-waste goals and banning the use of plastic bags."

    8. Buy items with less packaging, and with packaging that your community recycles. It's convenient to buy snack crackers already divided into even, individual portions in plastic bags, but that creates much more waste packaging than just buying the full box.

"The old adage of reduce, reuse, recycle remains apropos," says Malten. "We must remind ourselves that the first step is always to reduce our demand of natural resources."

    9. Support local farmers. Food grown or produced halfway around the world didn't just appear in the supermarket — it was shipped by plane, boat, truck or rail, and no matter which method of transportation it took, greenhouse gases were emitted along the way. Pick the apple grown in your state instead of the banana grown in another country.

    10. Plant a tree in your backyard. It seems simple, but just one tree can offset tons of carbon over its lifetime. If planted appropriately, it also will provide shade on a sunny day, perhaps reducing the use of energy for air-conditioning in buildings and homes.

"While reducing energy will cut our carbon emissions, it also is important to restore more natural 'sinks' that capture carbon," Malten says. "Planting trees and perennials are an easy place to start."

    11. Try used products first. Need a couch? Check newspaper classifieds or craigslist.com to see if you can find an acceptable used option before going to a showroom to buy a new one, which will have required both energy and materials to make and ship.

    12. Ask about green power. Many utility companies offer renewable energy options, which is power generated by wind or solar energy.

"For those who are unable to install renewable energy equipment on their homes or businesses, many energy utilities offer programs that allow consumers to support the growth of the renewable energy markets in the United States by paying a small price premium," says Malten. "This is not an option for everyone, but it is one way to help spur the market for renewable energy technologies."

    Hug O' War
    by Shel Silverstein

I will not play at tug o' war.
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
    Where everyone hugs
    Instead of tugs,
    Where everyone giggles
    And rolls on the rug,
    Where everyone kisses,
    And everyone grins,
    And everyone cuddles,
    And everyone wins.

    I has an idea....
I'm such a breeder. I really am. I'm sitting here with a deep desire to get together a bunch of young women who are as yet childless, but wanting children eventually. Why? To figure out how we could best take care of mothers, new and experienced, and fight to have some support in place when we work around to childbearing. Discuss things with young mothers, because lord knows they'd know what would be most useful. I want kids in about 10 years... how much change can we make in ten years' time?

wish i could think more clearly. will return to this breeder rant later.

In good news, I met a friggin' sublime human being a couple weeks ago. I was working, and this handsome and dark skinned gent comes in to buy some tape. "havin' a yard sale?"
    "moving sale", he says.
"ah, i just moved. it sucks"
    "Yeah."
and i must have said something about not having very much stuff and etc, because he said "You should come over, i'll give you a good deal." he gives me the address, and when the end of work came, i wandered over to the address he'd given me. We wound up talking for awhile, it turns out he's a chef. but since he was moving, he wanted to be rid of a lot of his cookware/glassware. he offered me all kinds of stuff. Mind you, he knew darn well i only had a dollar. nevertheless, I left with a big rubbermaid tub full of tupperware, a crock pot, four really nice pieces of stove top cookware, and an offer for a little folding table if i could get it home. Athena and Blaine came to the rescue on this one, and brought zee van to pick up the table the next day (and also loan me the ten bucks to pay Joel).

So, i accquired all this for 11 bucks, out of the goodness of one guy's heart. I got home, and it turned out that he had also left me and scott a set of GOOD china (serving platter, 4 plates), and a pasta maker (which L & B inherited). Holy mackerel. I'm so glad i met this guy.

I'm so glad i would rather be nice than mean. so glad i decided to be sociable at the right time. horribly glad that i decided to actually take the walk over.

So tired. must work 1-10 tomorrow. bed now.

Day off... I went to the store and bought foodstuffs for the next couple days. frozen crap, butter, some condiments, the little trappings of life. I'm rereading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. :)

it's been hot in portland, and i am going to go sleep until the heat breaks, then do laundry. I feel oddly domestic. **Rapid headshake** Clean socks are wonderful, no matter who you are.

The apartment is starting to come together. hopefully i can get more work done in the next two days, i'd mostly like to get my clothes clean, and take out more moving debris. There's only a little furniture left to place, and i would like to set up my SNES.

I am now going to retire to the bedroom and read... how's everyone doing?
