    Workin Late

So, here I am, at work able to post to LJ because I am going to be here quite late.  I was only supposed to come in for training, but in the middle of it, my boss came in and said, "Laura has taken ill and has gone home.  Can you cover the team lead shift tonight?"  Of coarse I said yes.  With all the time off I have been taking going to conventions and what not, I have been getting a little hungry for the hours.  So, rrather than the four hours I was expecting to get, I will be getting twice that today.  (Yay!)  It also means I will be getting close to my 30 hour limit for the week.  (Yay!)  With the move coming up, this will help cover the costs of that which makes my beloved

[info]chirosinger and I very happy.  My project on the Indianapolis is also progressing well.  My higher-ups really like the idea I have and I will be proceeding with it.  I am almost done with it and I should have everything ready to go before the move.  Hopefully before Convergeance so I won't have to scramble when the time comes at the end of July.  Not to mention, having everything in order before moving day so I won't be swamped.
That is the news, weather and sports at this hour.  Good night.

    Sucks!
So, we gave notice to our landlord last week and now our internet is disconnected.  Coincidnece?  I think not!  Now, my cell phone has gone belly up and I can't get it to work.  I am slowly becoming disconnected with the world and I only have very limited access to internet, email and the occasional short window to update LJ at the moment.  This will likely continue until we move at the end of July.  This also means until then, I am unable to transmit picture or sound files until that time, so if you are expecting anything from me in that department, I hope you can wait until then to receive it.  If not, I must offer my most heartfelt apologies because it just isn't going to happen before then due to circumstances beyond my control.  I will be a little difficult to contact in the next few weeks, so please bear with me.

    It is official.
[info]chirosinger and I are moving.  We have gotten the clinic out of the house.  (Business is already picking up in the new place) and we are pulling up steaks and moving from this bottom half of a duplex and moving into a sweet little bungalow.  We will be officially moved by August 1 although we will likely be taking up residence a week or two earlier so we can get the old place all cleaned up etc.  I will post the new address later for those who may be interested.  We will continue to rent, but the owner of the place has stated she would be willing to sell so we shall be visiting options there in a few months.  We are EXCITED!!!!!!

    I Have a Quest

Summer is coming and so is "Sharkfest" for the aquarium.  I have been assigned to get information about the sinking of the "USS Indianapolis".  I have been doing some cool research on this event.  Some of it really interesting and some other reports less than credible.  (Like the guy who reported 30 foot tiger sharks dragging thier hapless victims into the green murky depths...)  A good sized great white is only 22 feet or so.  But, are there any WWII history buffs out there with interesting infor on this particular event?  I'd love to hear from you.

Able to come up for air
It occurs to me lately how things kind of get going, you do a few favours, take on a few tasks and one day realize  goodness I  wonder how life got so busy.  The last week has involved getting a few little tasks done.  Friday, I started doing rounds for a few things I had to get done.  Take the hand bills for the Hennepin Overland MR club to the printer so we have some for the train show over the weekend.  Pick up the second run of 'Bears All' so I have some product for Marcon coming up this weekend.  THIS WEEKEND??!??!?!??  How did that come about so suddenly?
Saturday was the model train show at the State Fair grounds and then I went to the River Folk performance at Cafe Juliano.  I sat enjoying the music while writing counter arguments to a certain celebrity who released a critically slammed documentary about intelligent design.  (You know who I am talking about, but I won't mention the name or the film as it has already gotten more publicity than it deserves.)  Just to get all that nonsense out of my head.  Then we had the open house for [info]chirosinger's new clinic.  Fell into bed afterwards and was awakened far too early by a certain Australian terrier who was wide awake and bored after being cooped up in the kennel all day yesterday.
Dogs are walked and fed and washed.  Kobe has got some kind of fungal infection on his feet, or so suspects the groomer.  He says he has seen good results from washing the dog's feet with oatmeal shampoo.  We will try this before rushing him off to the very expensive vet.  He seems to be a bit happier after a couple of days of washing, although he looks dreadfully forlorn while his feet are getting washed.  I am still a little groggy, but functioning.  Tillie is obsessively chasing a little squeaky ball I keep throwing for her.  Life is good.

    Isn' t it interesting...

how just overnight the carefully edited entries I put in the day before can shift their letters around and respell words wrong and it shows up the following morning causing me to edit my entries all over again?

    Hello from Duluth

Okay, first and foremost...  Happy Birthday,

    [info]chirosinger.  I love you, sweetie.

I arrived in Duluth for the Thousand Lakes Region convention for the National Model Railraod Association.  It is being held at the Depot Museum and Cultural center and it has been AMAZING!!!.  They have on display, here, one the the HUGE steam engines they used to transport iron ore from Two Harbors to the ore docks in Duluth.  They have the driving wheels jacked up an inch or so and every now and again the wheels start turning and you can see how all the valve mechanisms work.  They have beautifully preserved equipment here and a ride on the Lake Superior Scenic railroad up the former DN&IR up to Two Harbours where they have another one fo those great big 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone" type engines on display.  The evening concluded with a dinner cruise on the "Vista Star".  We went around the harbour and looked at some of the big Great Lakes Freighters docked and ready to receive cargo.  We even took a ride around one and got to see one of the big ones taking on a load of tackanite iron ore.
Tomorrow, we hit the swap meet in the afternoon and head off to look at some model railraods here and then I hop the bus and head for home.

    Yawn...
Just got home from Chicago and house concert in Waukegan.  It was a fabulous time.  If you have never had the privilege of an extended road trip with [info]chasophonic and [info]bonz_lizard,not to mention my beloved, [info]chirosinger you have missed out on a lot of good laughs.  I had a lot of fun at my concert and was surprised and delighted by some of the attendees whom I do not get to see nearly often enough.  I have to get another run of "Bears All" now that I have returned as the crowd at the concert cleaned me right out.  :-)
I just got home and checking through the mail I pulled out an envelope addressed to me which contained my green card.  I am now officially a card-carrying foreigner.  As we have been joking all weekend,  "welcome to the US.  Now you can leave."

Thanks again to [info]alymid for hosting the concert and for the WONDERFUL mushroom caps.  It was really nice to see [info]zencuppa there as well.  She came even further than I did for this concert.  But I welcome any opportunity to catch up with dear old friends.  Thanks to everyone who came and stuck around for the music circle afterwards.  We all had a blast.

    Moving Date

We have set next Wednesday for chirosinger to be moving her equipment to the new clinic.  We have put up drywall and painted the crap out of the palce.  We will be cleaning the carpets on Monday and putting the finishing touches on the palce on Tuesday.  It will be nice to have a little space for a while.  We are so looking forward to this.

"I have no further questions. Have a good day."
These were the last words spoken by the immigration officer as she lowered the 'approved' stamp on my green card application.  We had "that" interview this morning and now I am eligible to remain in the US indefinitely.  YAY!  I can go home for Christmas this year!

    Last Few Weeks
I guess this would be my first post since I left for Consonance.  The convention was great, and we would both like to extend our humble thanks to everyone who attended.  We just got back from Minicon.  CD sales were pretty good.  I love releasing a new CD.  My dad has been in town for the last week and we have enjoyed having him very much.  He took care of the dogs while we hustled at the convention.  Big kudos to [info]chasophonic who did just a fabulous job setting up the music programming.  Alastair Reynolds was the guest of honour and we I was hooked up with him for, as it turns out, he is a major train fan.  I spirited him away after closing ceremonies and took him off the the Hennepin Overland and ran a few trains for him.  I am looking forward to a continued association with a new found friend.
I also got to sit in as a panelist for 'Aliens Without Eyes' which was a bunch of high-powered biology researchers discussing how aliens creatures may evolve on other planets.  I was the token 'amateur naturalist', but  I found I was able to contribute.  I was truly honoured to be included on a panel with such a high intellectual level.

    Presidents' Day
The aquarium was a real hot-spot, today.  And why not?  I really can't think of a better way to honour high level politicians than to spend the day with primitive, ruthless predators.

    I love irony, don't you?
We had a little incident at the aquarium last week.  Jesse, our 9-foot, 300 pound sand tiger shark took a round out of a white tip reef shark.  Some folks managed to get some video footage of the occurrence and it made the local news in a big way.  So the place has been hopping since with lots of people coming in to see the wounded shark, which recovering nicely in the holding pool along with all the other white tips  who have been put in there so they can grow a little bigger and not be as tempting.  Jesse ate a black tip shark about five years ago, which is still talked about.  Well, here I am taking a bunch of people on the behind the scenes tour and the subject of the recent attack on the white tip came up.  I am explaining while these things do occur from time to time what with Jesse being the large apex predator that she is and not exactly hard wired to resist temptation, they are very rare.  "We keep them well fed, and Jesse doesn't tend to hunt her tank mates because they are healthy and sharks don't tend to go into hunting mode unless they sense an injured animal..."  The words are hanging in space barely inches from my mouth and someone points in the tank and says, "Look!  They're fighting!" and Jesse is having a go at a wobbegong shark.  It managed to get away and made a hasty run for the bottom of the tank and disappeared so I am sure it was okay.  We're wondering now if Jesse just isn't getting enough to eat, or if she is just developing a taste for her tank mates.  Perhaps the other sharks are perceiving as a threat and making pre-emptive strikes and she's just letting them know she's had enough.  I don't know, but the irony of the situation has not been lost on me.

In other news, we just got train tickets for Consonance.  [info]chirosinger and I are GoH's there and </a></b></a>[info]chasophonic and </a></b></a>[info]bonz_lizard are coming along, too.  Look out California, you're in for a real treat![info] Riverfolk is getting a concert spot at Consonance.  I get  get to go on a long train ride and that is going to be a blast.   We'll be taking the Empire Builder to Portland and being that I model the old Great Northern Railroad, this is the route I have been reading about since I was 14.  This is going to be FUN!  My new CD is just down to one fiddle trak I will be recording next Wednesday and in the meantime I can get the rest mixed down and have th first run ready for Consonance.   Brand new CD in a part of the country  which is, for me, a relatively untapped market.  I have lots to do but  lots to look forward to  as well.[info]

I got to feed a sea turtle.
I was scheduled to work very early yesterday in the husbandry department at the aquarium.  We get those shifts occasionally, and they are pretty cool.  I spent most of the morning cutting up capelin, but we also got to go in and do the actual feeding.  My task was to feed Calypso, one of the big loggerhead sea turtles we have there.  She is well over 200 pounds and has an appetite to match.  I called her over to her feeding station by snapping the feeding  tongs in the water and she swam right over.  Her large head rose out of the water with her mouth wide open and I started dropping capelin and squid in there which she accepted gratefully.  Then she began telling me tales of woe about how no one ever feeds her and that she never gets enough to eat.  When her bucket was empty, she continued to beg for food but I was out.  I had some for the other sea turtles who tend to stay away when she is feeding because she is such a bully and won't let them eat.  They made brief appearances and had a little bit of squid and vitamin supplements but calypso always came back.  I had to entice her some as when she got it in her head that there was no more to eat there she would go off and bully the sharks at their feeding stations so I had to keep her attention as best I could.  I would give her the odd piece of food, but I made her work for it.  By diverting her attention under water and then dropping it so she would have to swim after it bought a bit of time.  I am looking forward to the day they give me a bucket of mackerel and tell me to go and feed the sharks.
